              A message from the Director
Public Recreation – Why it’s important
Over a hundred and twenty years ago our community had the
foresight to invest in park land and recreation programs to promote

health and encourage community engagement. Guided by the
adage “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure” the
Corvallis Parks & Recreation Department was created.

Since then we have added over 1,800 acres of parks and natural
areas, 22 miles of trails, picnic shelters, a community senior center,

Activities for youth help them form positive behaviors to become
the best person they can be. Activities for families help form
friendships and the bonds that build community. Great parks,
great trails and great facilities provide residents and visitors with the
option to make healthy lifestyle choices.

Youth Safety: Parks and Recreation’s Aquatic Center works hard to
prevent drowning deaths in our community by teaching over 5,500
swimming and water safety lessons annually.

Youth Health: Parks and Recreation’s youth recreation programs
and neighborhood parks keep kids healthy.

For the Economy: Businesses are dependent on their ability to
attract and retain highly educated professional employees. The
deciding factor of where these individuals choose to live is often
the quality of life of the community the business resides in. Parks
