LinkedIn 101 for Program Participation for Mentees
This year, La Trobe’s Career Mentoring Program is going to communicate with all group
members through our LinkedIn group page. Our LinkedIn Group is a dynamic environment
where mentors and mentees can connect, ask questions and post/discuss articles of interest.
Instead of a monthly newsletter, La Trobe will host all information on the group page.
For this program we ask you to
1) Get a LinkedIn Profile
2) Join the ‘La Trobe University Student Career Mentoring’ Group
What is LinkedIn? LinkedIn (www.LinkedIn.com) is a professional, business networking tool
that focuses on professional dialogue, professional networking and opportunities.
Get a LinkedIn Profile
1. Visit www.LinkedIn.com. Enter your name and an email you check regularly. Click
‘Join’
2. Input your personal details and your current employment status
3. Select desired options of ‘How do you want to use LinkedIn’
Your Profile
This is your chance to build your online CV. Take a few minutes to thoughtfully fill out your
profile:
Picture
A photograph personalizes your profile. Remember that this is a professional networking site,
so only post a picture that you would show someone in a job interview.
Take some time and finish your profile
Treat this online profile like your CV. As students, you may not have a long job history but you
can still showcase your talents. What groups are you involved in? Do you have a blog or a
website that is relevant to your career aspirations? Think of career-related activities that you
put time and effort into. Remember that this is a professional profile; don’t post information
that you wouldn’t want co-workers or employers to see.
Privacy Settings
Your privacy settings can always be accessed and changed: select the ‘settings’ tab
which is always on the top right portion of your page.
Join the ‘La Trobe University Student Career Mentoring’ Group
Once you have a LinkedIn profile set up, you need join our Mentoring Group. When on the
main page after signing in:
1. Select the ‘Groups’ tab from the top navigation bar.
2. Select ‘Groups Directory’
3. Type ‘La Trobe University’ into the search bar on the left side of the page.
4. Find the ‘La Trobe University Student Mentoring’ Group and select ‘Join this Group’
5. This is a private group for our team, so we will confirm your entry.
Get discussing!
Our Group page hosts program announcements, relevant discussions and news articles.
Mentors and mentees should try to post a comment or add to a discussion at least
once a month.
LinkedIn will email you a summary of these Group interactions each week.
1. We strongly suggest keeping email notifications at once a week so that you can stay
active and participate in the Group. You can always change this frequency at the
bottom of the Group emails.
