                                                January Newsletter.

Dear Parents,

I hope you all had a very enjoyable Christmas and a happy New Year! We started the term with an INSET day learning
how to use APP (assessing pupil progress) for Numeracy. We aim to have this fully in place in all year groups by the end
of the summer term. Reception is the exception to this, where the children’s progress is monitored using early learning
goals.

New morning routine
I would like to thank all the parents who have cooperated so supportively with the changes to the beginning of the day.
Children will now be able to choose to come into class at 8:40a.m. If parents do need to come into the school office, they
should use the front door. If your child has to bring a musical instrument to school, these can be left in the staffroom by
the office, for collection straight after morning registration. Please make sure any instruments are clearly labelled with
your child’s name.

In order to make more efficient use of the working time available in the day, morning playtime has been moved from
10:30 to 10:45 a.m. This allows teachers to have 3 full sessions in class every morning, rather than 2 sessions with small
blocks of time to fill in either side. Lunch time is not affected.

School closures.
I would like to apologise for the uncertainty many of you experienced trying to find out if the school was closed last
week. The procedures schools have to follow has been changed, so that South Glos give the closures to local radio
stations and post the information on their websites rather than schools doing this themselves. On Wednesday last week,
Mrs Malsingh notified the council at 7:10a.m. but the information was not posted on their website or put out on the radio
until 8:15 a.m.
Although a message is left on the answer machine, I appreciate that it can be very difficult for parents to get through in
the morning.
In order to make it easier for parents to find out about school closure, we are going to make the information available on
our partially completed website by 7:25a.m. any morning when snow is affecting the area. The website address is
www.gotoourschool.com/fcce
When deciding whether to open or not we have to consider the safety of the school grounds for children, and also
whether enough staff will be able to get here to supervise the children adequately.

New Secretary.
We welcome Mrs Kathryn Schofield as our new secretary. It would be very helpful to reduce congestion around the office
before school. Parents who just have a letter to deliver could help by using the postbox by the main entrance.

Christmas collection
The KS1 Nativity and the KS2 Carol Concert were both excellent. I would like to thank the children and all the staff for
the tremendous effort they put in. I felt really proud to be part of this wonderful school community. Thank you for your
generous contributions to the offerings, which raised £447 for the Make a Wish Foundation.

Allocation of children to classes policy.
This policy has been recently reviewed by Governors. A full copy of the policy can be seen in the school office and will be
available on the school website very shortly.

Clubs.
A list is being sent home on Monday for the coming term. I am afraid this has been delayed due to the closure days last
week. Please return the slip for any clubs your child wants to attend. Where numbers are limited, it will be decided on a
first come first served basis. Clubs will start week commencing 18th January except for the KS2 choir which will start this
Wednesday 13th January 2010.

KS1 SATs meeting
There will be a short meeting after school at 3:30p.m. on Wednesday 20th January for any Year 2 parents who would like
to know more about KS1 SATs. This will be held in Mrs Francis’ classroom. It would be preferable for children not to
attend this meeting, as we feel very strongly that the SATs process should be kept as low key as possible for them.

School development plan
There are six priorities for the school this year. These are:-
 To embed the use of APP for writing throughout the school as a means of monitoring pupil progress more
        accurately.
 To introduce the use of APP for Numeracy as a means of monitoring pupil progress accurately.
 To provide children with the tools, skills and environment necessary to enable them to become effective learners.
 To improve standards in writing.
 To use teaching assistants effectively to promote pupil progress, especially those with special educational needs.
 To raise the attainment of boys in Reception.
 To ensure that safeguarding procedures are understood and followed by staff, governors and parents.
Progress towards each of these priorities will be monitored throughout the year.

Football cards.
We have had several incidents of children being upset because of football cards going missing, so unfortunately we are
now banning football cards at school.
