A popular year-round retreat surrounded by beautiful ponderosa pine forests,
Fenton Lake State Park is a mellow mountain escape with a 35 acre fishing and
canoeing lake. The wind blows gently through the trees, where the visitor may be
on the lookout for an abundance of birds in an isolated, wilderness atmosphere.
A popular fishing hole for New Mexico residents, with wheelchair accessible plat-
forms, and a biathlon trail, the park also attracts hikers and cross-country skiers,
who often use it as a base for excursions into the adjacent Santa Fe National

Stocked with rainbow trout from fall through spring, the lake is home to German
brown trout. Although most anglers prefer the warmth and comfort of summer, the
best fishing is in the winter, through two feet of ice.

Fenton Lake is closed to sailboats, sailboards and all powerboats (including those
with electric trolling motors) but open to canoes, rowboats, and inflatable boats.

The park has only one trail, the Hal Baxter Memorial Cross-Country Ski Trail and
Biathlon Practice Area. An easy 2-mile loop, it winds along the bank of the Rio
Cebolla and by the non-hookup campsites southwest of the lake.
