     The 1st Gymnasio of Volos is a historic building which was constructed in 1962 (after the devastating earthquake which struck the city of Volos in 1955). The Cypriot community financed its construc
     Nowadays, it houses 2 schools with common schoolyard, fitness room, laboratories, and canteen.
     The building has some particularities that make the energy saving a demanding task. The building has an old construction not environmentally friendly (rooms with high ceilings that require extra hea
     The academic year 2009-2010, the school took on the responsibility to implement several environmental projects so as to raise environmental sensitivity and energy saving.
     In the framework of the IUSES project, the school implemented a series of activities:




     Through the above mentioned activities, the students managed to reduce the electricity consumption of their school and, most importantly, learn in an interactive way how to adopt energy saving as

                One class carried out a project for a national competition under the auspices of the
                Greek Ministry of Education and the Hellenic Broadcasting Corporation and produced
                an environmental multimedia video with subject "One planet - One opportunity"

                The environmental group of students created a blog about green energy in order to
                sensitize the school community and student's families. (http://greenenergy-

Each transition year student developed a powerpoint presentation on renewable energy.



A group of students planted 250 trees and bushes in the schoolyard so as to absorb
CO2 emissions and reduce the greenhouse effect.
Students participated in a project directed by the Mediterranean SOS Network which
aimed to clean the local beaches. This action was covered by a local TV station
(ASTRA TV) and students refered to their participation in the IUSES project.
Students initiated a freecycling programme in the school so as to minimize the wastes
by giving free of charge items they don't need.

Colaboration with the Parents' Association of the school for reorganising presentations
and awareness campaign

The school submitted electricity bills that prove the electricity consumption
and the energy saving procuded by their activities
Students managed to disseminate their knowledge about energy saving at
school and gain environmentally friendly behaviors. They were divided in
groups (environmental, awareness, promotion, action, construction) and their
activiites had an impact in the whole school community and their families.

Students used a wide range of project methods (constructions, presentations,
use of ICT, excursions, field visits, promotion in local media)
They managed to combine IUSES with other educational projects and
cooperate with other stakeholders (Municipality of Volos, Mediterranean SOS
Network, local media, laboratory of physical science of the perfecture of
Magnisia)
Students assigned responsibility for energy saving actions easily replicable by
the new students of the next academic year and other schools also.
Students dedicated themselves in the EESA throught the academic year and
followed a feasible and accomplishable action plan. School has future plans
under the same philosophy

     Two students from the “1st Likeio Serron” planned common activities for their houses with the objective to change the be
