E-MAIL LISTS (mailing lists, listservs, or discussion groups)
Introduction to Music Technology Mus 3160

An e-mail list (listserv, discussion group, or mailing list) is simply a group of participants who
send each other e-mail messages relating to a common subject. All members receive a copy of
each e-mail message that is posted to the list.

Most mailing lists have two addresses, one used for joining (subscribing) to the list, the other
used to send (post) messages to the list. Avoid sending subscribe (and unsubscribe) messages to
the entire list, by using the wrong address.

Many lists have a digest version, in which the day's messages are sent in one document instead of
being sent individually through the day. If so, you specify the digest version when you first join
the list.

There are thousands of active listservs, addressing all kinds of subjects. To find music lists, start
with the following web sites:

The Classical Music E-mail List Directory

Directory of Music E-Mail Lists

Places to look for mailing lists of all types include:

Neosoft Publicly Accessible Mailing Lists
http://www.paml.net

Liszt, the mailing list directory

You can also use the mailing list search form at Tile.net [http://tile.net/lists/]

You should also do a Google search [http://www.google.com/]

Try keywords: listservs music; or mailing lists music, etc.

You might also want to try Yahoo groups [http://www.yahoo.com/]

Subscribing to an E-mail List

Once you've found a list you'd like to join, you'll need to send a subscribe message. Different
listservs use varying ways to do this. Possibilities include an empty e-mail sent to the appropriate
address, an e-mail with a subscribe command contained in the subject line or in the body of the
text; usually, you'll need to provide your name as well. You'll need to find out the correct method
of subscribing from the list description (most list servers will send back an explanation of the
correct command structure if you get it wrong in your request).

Once on the list, you'll receive a message giving some instructions about unsubscribing, etc.,
(DON'T LOSE THIS!) and you will begin to receive messages from other participants. You can
reply to the messages, send new messages, or just read them without further participation.

To unsubscribe from the list, send an unsubscribe message to the list administrator. In the body
of the message you type something like "unsubscribe" followed by the name of the list and your
e-mail address—again, the process varies from one list to another.

Some lists are web-based, meaning you read and post messages via a web browser. These types
of lists may or may not require you to actually subscribe to the list.

Additional Tips
Subscribe to only one or two mailing lists at a time, so as not to get overwhelmed by the
potentially high number of messages.

Save the list subscription instructions that arrive following your subscription request—these
instructions tell you how to unsubscribe, and may also give instructions concerning the types of
message you can post to the list.

If you know you will not be checking your e-mail for more than a few days, consider
unsubscribing from the list, and re-subscribing later. Otherwise, you may have literally hundreds
of messages to catch-up on (or, at least, to delete).

Delete messages that you don't need to keep; otherwise you can exceed your disk quota on the
mail server (your account then becomes unusable and you'll have to ask Computer Services to fix
it).
