Chairman’s Message
Dear Fellow Chamber Members:
As my term as Chair of the Greater Tampa Chamber of Commerce comes to an
end, I look back with pride at all of our accomplishments this year. I consider
this position to have been the greatest opportunity of my career. But how do I
thank everyone? How do I tell all of you how grateful I am for having had this
opportunity to lead such a dedicated, enthusiastic group of individuals? As I
pondered these thoughts, I was reminded of the fact that we can only succeed
with great people beside us - and I have been blessed with some great people! There’s No Business Like Small Business!
Regardless of the challenges that I faced, there was always someone to help me
and support me in my quest to represent the membership and community in
which we live.

was a huge success and something that I hope will continue to be a successful
program for the Chamber in years to come, as well as spread to other parts of
the country.
It is impossible for me to applaud loudly enough those companies who have
sponsored chamber events and programs throughout the year. Without their
support, we wouldn’t have been able to put on such terrific events. I encourage
all member organizations to sponsor events in 2007. Sponsorship provides an
excellent opportunity to market your products and services to other Chamber
members, and they are a great target audience.
I wish my incoming chair, Fred McClure every success as he takes office. I still
remember the excitement I felt last year at this time and I know that Fred will
feel similar emotions and thoughts as I did.
Again, many thanks to all of you for your unconditional support throughout my

WOW Event!
By all accounts, if Chamber Chair Jose Valiente had take-aways from this year’s visit, the first would be
to learn about the opportunity for the School District of Hillsborough County to win the Broad Prize The Beck Group
for Urban Education, the largest education prize in the country. Awarded this year to Boston Public
Schools, this coveted award honors large urban school districts that demonstrate the greatest overall
performance and improvement in student achievement, while reducing achievement gaps for poor and
minority students. Reception
The second take-away would be the successful integration of bioscience and engineering in area
schools—again, another successful model established throughout the Boston School District in 2001.
DLA Piper, LLP
Chair Valiente learned that the successful integration was driven by three key things: (1) an advocacy
support group; (2) a strong curriculum development; and (3) an enhanced professional development
program for instructional personnel.
