HYUNDAI
TRUE to form, Hyundai presented a plethora of new and upgraded models at this morning’s opening of the 2008
Australian International Motor Show in Sydney.
Headlining the rampant South Korean brand’s Darling Harbour exhibition was the first Australian appearance of the i30 CW, a stylish
five-door wagon version of the popular i30 small car that rides on a longer wheelbase to liberate more cargo space. Debuting in Sydney in
highly specified UK guise with unique-to-Australia steering and suspension tune, the i30 CW is expected to go on sale here in early 2009,
when it should be launched with a modest price premium over the i30 hatch.
While Australian specifications for Hyundai’s upcoming small wagon have not been finalised, the Sydney show car featured 17-inch alloy
wheels with 225/45-section tyres, side repeaters in its wing mirrors, USB/Aux/iPod connectivity,
a six-speaker sound system with steering wheel-mounted audio controls, twin side and curtain
airbags, and ESP stability/traction control. Aside from a guest appearance by new Hyundai
ambassador and champion swimmer Leisel Jones, Hyundai also announced a number of 2009
model year upgrades for its Getz, Accent, Elantra, Sonata and Tucson. Currently being shipped to
dealers ahead of its imminent release, the 2009 Getz will feature similar upgrades to this month’s
upgraded Tucson, including standard stability/traction control and Bluetooth connectivity with
media streaming. The upgraded 2009 Elantra and Accent will go on sale later this month. MP

comprises 11 model variants including single and dual-cab body styles in both ute and cab/

successful CJ Lancer four-door sedan and the first five-door Lancer since the CC version
was discontinued in July 1996, while the latter is Mitsubishi’s answer to the Volkswagen

PEUGEOT
PEUGEOT peeled the wraps off the Peugeot 308 CC – fresh from its world debut in Paris last
week – and a 308 XTS flagship small car at the Australian International Motor Show at Darling
Harbour this morning. Due on sale here next April, the 308 CC is the latest of Peugeot’s coupe-
cabriolet evolution, the first of which was seen with 206 CC seven years ago. As reported at
the time of its unveiling ahead of the Paris show, Peugeot engineered a number of innovative
features into the CC, such as a warm-air heating system built into the front seats. This “Airwave”
system is designed to act like a scarf by diffusing warm air adjustable for temperature, flow
and direction around the occupant’s shoulders and neck. Peugeot will also unveil a new range-
topping 308 model variant, the 308 XTS, which goes on sale today priced from $38,990. The
308 XTS is powered by the 207 GTi’s 128kW 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol engine, and is linked
to a new six-speed manual gearbox. The XTS has a unique lower front bumper and rear spoiler,
a reduced ride height and 18-inch alloy wheels. The XTS also has Xenon directional headlamps,

SKODA
SKODA celebrated its first year at the Australian International Motor Show this morning
with the surprise announcement of a turbo-diesel hot hatch. Joining the recently released
Renault Megane RS dCi 175 in this rarefied segment, the Octavia RS TDI will be available
in both five-door hatch and four-door wagon variations when it arrives later on in the
month. Under the bonnet is the 125kW version of the 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo-diesel,
pumping out 350Nm of torque from just 1800rpm. It is also fitted with a particulate filter.
Unlike the continuing manual-only 147kW 2.0-litre FSI turbo in the petrol-powered
Octavia RS, the TDI can be had with a six-speed DSG dual-clutch transmission. Other
RS additions include 18-inch alloy wheels wearing 225/40 R18 tyres, while the sports-
tuned suspension sees the Octavia’s ride height drop by a few millimetres. Equipment
levels run to heated front seats, an alarm system, alloy wheels, low-profile tyres, six
Octavia RS TDI airbags, electronic stability control, ABS brakes, traction control, and engine braking
control (EBC). BM FULL STORY: CLICK HERE
SUBARU
SUBARU pulled the covers off the long-awaited MY2009 Impreza WRX sedan at the Australian
International Motor Show in Sydney this morning.
On sale from December in both four-door sedan and five-door hatchback guise, the MY09 WRX
has 26kW more power and 23Nm more torque – for maximum outputs of 195kW at 6000rpm and
343Nm at 4000rpm – plus better claimed fuel efficiency and upgraded suspension. The improved
outputs were largely achieved as a result of a larger turbocharger and an increase in turbo boost
pressure. Claimed fuel consumption is better, too, with the combined fuel consumption cycle
down from 10.7L/100km to 10.4L/100km. CO2 emissions are also down, from 252g/km to
247g/km. Perhaps acknowledging that the new WRX was given too soft a suspension tune, the
MY2009 upgrade also gets a new suspension package to improve handling. Increased spring
and damping rates and thicker stabiliser bars are the key changes. The upgrade also introduces a
$2500 optional package comprising leather trim and a sunroof. Satellite navigation continues as WRX sedan
a stand-alone option for $2990. PL FULL STORY: CLICK HERE

SUZUKI
SUZUKI topped and tailed its stand at the Australian International Motor Show this morning with
the local debut of the forthcoming entry-level sub-B Alto light car, as well as the Kizashi 3 concept
that will morph into the company’s mid-sized Camry fighter from 2010. A pair of limited editions
based on the Swift and SX4 was also wheeled out for Sydney show spectators.
But all eyes were on the Alto, which aims to be the cheapest new car available in Australia –
unless the Chinese get there first – when it is launched in about May next year. Expect pricing to
be in the $11,000 vicinity. Like the last Alto to be sold in Australia, this new one is built in India,
and is claimed to be expressly tuned by Suzuki’s engineers in Japan for European customer tastes.
Suzuki said the four-seater five-door Alto hatch is aimed “mainly at urban people who want a small
car that offers style and enjoyment together with great environmental credentials”. BM

Borrowing the ‘coupe sedan’ style of the highly successful Mercedes-Benz CLS, the Passat CC
made its local debut at the Sydney event ahead of the car’s launch slated at the beginning of next
year. Two V6s mated to a six-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox will be in the offering, with the 3.0-
litre TDI turbo-diesel delivering 125kW of power and 350Nm of torque to the front wheels, while the
220kW/350Nm 3.6-litre FSI petrol version will drive the 4Motion all-wheel drive version. Both CCs
will include four heated, Napa leather-covered seats, as well as climate-control, brushed aluminium
cabin trim, power adjustable front seats, eight airbags, and front and rear proximity sensors.

VOLVO
VOLVO made its presence felt at the Australian International Motor Show this morning with the
Asia-Pacific debut of its crucial – and inaugural – XC60 medium-sized SUV and two environmental-
flavoured contenders based on its C30 prestige small car. While the latter stood as a defiant
illustration that there is another Swedish brand with a strong position on alternative powertrains
– that is, clean diesel and bio-ethanol petrol engines, both under consideration for release here – the
XC60 is considered a vital cog in boosting the Ford-owned marque’s fortunes in Australia and
other SUV-consuming markets. The XC60 goes on sale here next March, and while local pricing
and specifications are still to be released, Volvo Car Australia (VCA) has confirmed that it will
be available with two engines: the familiar 210kW/400Nm T6 petrol unit and a 136kW/400Nm
2.4 turbo-diesel D5. As previously reported, the XC60 will also be fitted standard with the newly
developed ‘City Safety’ low-speed automatic braking system, which is designed to prevent – or at

Although our attention has turned towards Sydney today, GoAuto was also on the ground
in Paris last week at the Mondial de l’Automobile. Here are some of the highlights…
AUDI A1 SPORTBACK, A4 TDIe
AUDI telegraphed its plan to produce an all-new sub-A3 model dubbed the A1, which will replace the alloy-bodied A2 not sold in Australia,
when it revealed the Shooting Brake Concept way back in 2005. Then in June last year, when it revealed the three-door “Audi A1 project
quattro”, Audi announced its plan to produce the all-new entry-level model, which is likely to be based on the VW Polo platform and
will become a direct rival for BMW’s Mini Cooper hatch and Alfa Romeo’s new MiTo,
exclusively at its current A3 plant in Brussels, Belgium, from late 2009. Then, last week, the
Volkswagen Group’s luxury division used the Paris motor show opening to present the “A1
Sportback concept study”, which as the name suggests is a five-door bodystyle derivative of
the upcoming A1. The five-door’s appearance adds weight to expectations the A1 will spawn
an entirely new compact model family that comprises three- and five-door hatchbacks, high-
performance S1 and RS1 versions thereof, and perhaps even a new baby convertible to slot in
A1 Sportback beneath the new A3 Cabrio. MP FULL STORY: CLICK HERE
BMW X1
JUST as expected, BMW has come clean with what will become the newest member of both its small 1 Series compact model range and
the X-badged family of luxury SUVs. Revealed on the eve of its global public debut at the Paris motor show on October 2, the “Concept
X1” is expected to morph virtually unchanged into a production version next year, before going on sale
in Australia in late 2009. BMW describes the X1 “design study” as a precursor to a series production
version that will translate its X model design cues into “a younger and more urban concept”, as well
as give it a presence in the compact off-roader segment for the first time. Of course, the Munich maker
also claims to be the first to produce a premium compact SUV, which is expected to eventually be
joined by an A3-based Q3 model from Audi, a similar model that may be based on the Mercedes-Benz
B-class and is expected to be known as the GLC, and a new model from Land Rover, based on the
British off-road marque’s compact LRX SUV concept. MP FULL STORY: CLICK HERE
CITROEN GT, C4 WRC HYMOTION4
THE ‘crossover’ vehicle Citroen presented at last week’s Paris motor show is the most
salacious sports model the French manufacturer has ever produced in the modern era – but,
alas, this is a crossover into a virtual world and there is little prospect of the ‘GT by Citroen’
reaching either a racetrack or a manufacturing plant. Of course, that could change if its parent
PSA Peugeot-Citroen decided to create a car to race alongside Peugeot’s Le Mans contender.
For now, however, we must dive into another world – which in this case is the digital world
and a partnership between Citroen and the Polyphony, designers of the Gran Turismo 5 driving
simulation game. Essentially a replica of a Playstation Gran Turismo racecar, ‘GT by Citroen’
is a stunningly crafted, heavily sculpted, two-seater gull-winged coupe complete with a zero-
emissions electric drivetrain and fuel cell stack. TM FULL STORY: CLICK HERE
HYUNDAI i20
HYUNDAI pulled the wraps off its all-new Getz-replacing i20 at the Paris motor show last
week, but only in five-door hatchback form as the three-door version will not be ready to
unveil until next January. The i20 has been designed for the European market and will go on
sale there in January, undercutting the price of its main rivals, the Volkswagen Polo, Honda
Jazz and Ford Fiesta. It will tackle the market-leading Toyota Yaris (which also comes in
sedan form) and the Mazda2 in the growing light-car segment as Hyundai’s entry-level model
in Australia some time in the first half of 2009. DH FULL STORY: CLICK HERE

LADA REVOLUTION 3
SITTING incongruously alongside a brace of clunky Lada Nivas that appear to have
remained blissfully unchanged since the 1970s, Russian car-maker Avtovaz appropriately
provided one of the few concept sportscars at the otherwise green-dominated Paris
motor show. Though not quite a supercar, the all-wheel drive Lada Revolution 3 sat as
inconspicuously as possible in one of the more remote corners of the sprawling Paris Expo,
but nevertheless caught our enthusiast’s eye as a welcome relief from the apparently endless
parade of hybrids and electric city cars. Lada was effectively taken over by Renault earlier
this year with the French car-maker taking a vital stake in the increasingly important and
booming Russian market by purchasing a 25 per cent share in the long-running brand, so it
came as no surprise to see the Revolution 3 powered by a Renault engine. DH

LEXUS unveiled the much-anticipated convertible version of its IS
series at the Mondial de l’Automobile in Paris last week, complete with
a folding aluminium roof that comes with a claim of the fastest opening
time – 20 seconds – for a three-part roof design. As GoAuto reported in
August, the IS250C 2+2 is due on sale in Australia late next year and is
expected as a single model variant priced around $100,000.
With no news at this stage of a high-performance F-branded
version, the IS coupe-cabrio will arrive, as expected, with the
regular sedan’s 2.5-litre V6 engine and six-speed automatic gearbox
combination. And it should be a wonderful addition to the Toyota
