					Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language


*Introduction

  As Korea’s role in international society increases, Korean is becoming popular as a
foreign language. The goal of this program is to train Korean language teachers and
Korean language education experts who teach Korean as a foreign language as
professionals.

  In order to do so, students study the latest theories and teaching methods for Korean
language education as a foreign language and a second language and seek a general
understanding of Korean linguistics as a foreign language, Korean literature and Korean
culture in order to acquire skills in Korean language education that can contribute to
Korea’s internationalization.


*Course Overview

   Upon graduating, students who major in Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language
obtain a Level 2 Korean Language Teacher License granted by the Ministry of Culture
and Tourism under article 13 of the Basic Law for Korean Language. Open courses are
to help the students obtain the Korean Language Teacher License as defined in section 1,
article 13 of the Basic Law for Korean Language. Courses are generally divided into
several fields: Korean Linguistics, Linguistics, Korean Language Education, Korean
Culture, and Teaching Practice in Korean Classes.

   1. Korean Linguistics and the linguistics field is to understand the nature of Korean
   language based on the latest theories on phoneme, morphology, and semantics and
   proceed further with in-depth studies based on theories on Contrastive Linguistics,
   Applied Linguistics and Foreign Language Acquisition.

    2. The Korean Language Education field is to develop the actual ability as a Korean
    language teacher by studying the following courses: Introduction to Korean
    Language Education, Korean Education Process, Methods for Teaching Korean,
    Functional Education in Korean, Measurement & Evaluation in Korean, Materials
    for Korean Teaching, and Professional Development of Korean as a foreign
    language.

    3. The aim of the Korean culture field is to get comprehensive understanding of
    general Korean culture such as Koreanology, Korean literature, and Korean history.

    4. The Teaching Practicum in Korean Classes is to develop actual teaching ability
    by practicing teaching classes, making teaching plans, and implementing actual
    training for teaching Korean to foreigners.

1) Korean Linguistics and the Linguistics Area (Area 1 and 2 of Basic Law for Korean
Language)

Korean Linguistics as a Foreign Language

This course seeks a comprehensive understanding of Korean language education and
further studies Korean linguistics as it pertains to Korean as a foreign language with
approaches that differ from general Korean linguistics.




Theories of Korean Phonetics Phonology

This course aims to understand the phonetic system of Korean pronunciation and study
phonemic rules and changes.




Theories of Korean Lexicology Morphology

This course examines theories and methods of Korean vocabulary and morphology as
well as studying the basic concept of morpheme, which is the basic element that forms
sentence patterns in Korean language, and the principle of forming words and types of
words.




Theories of Korean Syntax

This course aims at understanding and analyzing the sentence structure in Korean and
studies syntactic functions of Korean sentences.




Theories of Korean Semantics Pragmatics

This course is to study the meaning of vocabulary and sentences in Korean language as
well as covering the studies on the usage of speech in conversation.
Studies in the History of Korean Language

This course tracks the changes in Korean and studies the process of change through a
diachronic approach regarding change in Korean language.




Regulations & Cultural Etiquette of Korean Language

Students understand orthography rules and study proper language etiquette according to
situation.




Theories on Foreign Language Acquisition

This course is to establish a theoretical foundation about acquiring Korean by
understanding differences between acquiring a mother language and a foreign language
and to study general theories of foreign language acquisition.




An Introduction to Linguistics

This course is to establish the theoretical foundation necessary to understand various
languages from a language typological view.

Contrastive Linguistics

Students investigate the similarity and differences between Korean and foreign
languages with a contrastive approach and study how to apply them to Korean language
education.
Social Linguistics

Students examine the specific language used by speakers in terms of society and culture
and review the change in language as well as relation with social factors to apply the
results to Korean language education.




2) Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language Area (Area 3 of Basic Law for Korean
Language)

An Introduction to Teaching Korean as a Foreign Language

This introductory course explores the principles in Korean language education,
grammar for Korean language education, and Korean teaching methods with regard to
how to teach Korean to foreigners.




Materials for Teaching Korean

This course aims to study the principles of organizing materials for Korean language
education as a foreign language and review and analyze a variety of Korean materials
based on the principles. Also, students reorganize the materials based on organization
principles of previously learned materials and develop materials proper for the goals of
learners.




Theories of Language Teaching

Students review the development history of second language and foreign language
teaching methods according to foreign language study and investigate language teaching
methods that can be applied to Korean language education.
Studies on Teaching Korean Grammar

Students learn Korean grammar for learners of other languages and study how to apply
them in the field of Korean language education.




Teaching Korean Vocabulary

This course will analyze the types and characteristics of Korean vocabulary and
systemically study the framework of vocabulary teaching methods.




Teaching Korean Pronunciation

Students review the phonemic system of Korean to teach Korean pronunciation and
study methods of application in the field to teach foreigners.




Methodologies of Teaching Korean Speaking & Writing

Students review theories and methods of teaching speaking and writing skills among
functional teaching methods of foreign language, and further study the methodology of
how to improve the ability for utilizing Korean expressions.




Methodologies of Teaching Korean Listening & Reading

Students review theories and methods of teaching listening and reading skills among
functional teaching methods for foreign languages, and further study the methodology
of how to improve the ability for Korean comprehension.
Measurement & Evaluation in Korean as a Foreign Language

Students study the theories and methods of evaluating language proficiency to teach
Korean as a foreign language.




Methodologies for Research in Korean Education

Students establish topics and goals in sectors of interest in the Korean education field,
and set hypotheses for studies and research plans, and further examine statistical survey
methods.




Teaching Korean culture

This course aims to understand Korean culture and further studies the methods of
effectively teaching Korean culture in the field of Korean education.




Teaching Korean Literature to Foreigners*

This course is to review the theories and methods of Korean literature education to
better understand Korean and determine literature education that will help improve
Korean proficiency.




Korean Classical Literature for Foreigners*

Students will analyze selected pieces of Korean classical literature proper for teaching
foreigners, and study effective teaching methods.
Korean Modern Literature for Foreigners*

Students will analyze selected pieces of Korean modern literature that is proper for
teaching foreigners and study effective teaching methods.




Teaching Korean to Immigrants in Korea

This course is to examine the proper Korean education process and contents and Korean
culture suitable for the demand and needs of women of immigration marriage and
laborers, and further deals with teaching methods for immigrants in Korea.




Teaching Korean to School-aged Children from Non-Korean-speaking Backgrounds

This course is to study teaching methods of linguistic and psychological development to
children who grew up in non-Korean speaking backgrounds to help them adjust to
school life in Korea and improve their Korean proficiency.




Teaching Korean through Multi-media

This course is to seek methodology that can attract interests and motivation of learners
and improve learning effectiveness, along with becoming familiar with tools that can
implement the methodology of developing and utilizing multi-media Korean materials.




Professional Development of Korean as a Foreign Language

This course examines the primary qualification and characteristics of teachers who
teach Korean as a foreign language and study the aspects of an ideal teacher.
Theories of Bilingual/Multilingual Education

This course introduces important concepts, thoughts, and research methods in
bilingual/multilingual education to teachers so that they can apply the theories of
bilingual/multilingual education in the field.




Studies on Error Analysis in Learning Korean

This course is to examine theories and perspectives towards learners of Korean through
the defects in actual speech and to analyze learner errors of different levels to better
apply the results to Korean education.




Seminar on Korean Teaching

Students review problems and current issues in the field of Korean education and
suggest the effective and ideal direction for Korean education.

Understanding Modern Korean Literature

Students acquire general knowledge of modern Korean literature.




Understanding Classical Korean Literature**

Students acquire general knowledge of classical Korean literature.
Understanding Korean Poetry**

Students acquire general knowledge of Korean poetry.




Understanding Korean Culture***

This course aims to understand the characteristics of Korean culture by comparing it
with other cultures.




Modern Korean Culture***

This course aims to understand the characteristics of Korean modern culture from the
perspective of non-Koreans.




Understanding Korean Society

Students learn the social and cultural characteristics to better understand Korean society.




Understanding Korean History

This course is to acquire general knowledge of Korean history.




Introduction to Korean philosophy

This course aims to understand the basic contents of Korean philosophy that should be
presented to Korean learners and establish the basic foundation to study Koreanology
through contrastive studies on Asian and Western philosophy along with Korean
philosophy.
An Introduction to Koreanology

This course aims to understand general Koreanology which aims for further research
and development on the uniqueness of Korea by studying the various fields related to
Korea.




4) Teaching Practice in Korean Classes Area (Area 5 of Basic Law for Korean
Language)

Teaching Practice & Management in Korean Classes

This course is to learn how to teach Korean and manage classes by implementing actual
teaching practice.




Practicum for Teaching Korean

This course requires the teaching of actual classes by students to experience the
methods of Korean education.

        ** ***: Although students may have taken several courses, it is recognized as
         taking one course for evaluation of the Korean Language Teacher License.
