Dear Ashok,

We sincerely thank you for submitting the proposal for
"A Study to Evaluate Blindness & Treat Avoidable Blindness in Elementary School Children"
and for sending clarification.

We regret to inform you that we are not able to fund your proposal
because the scope of your project is not within the
core criterion for Vibha and at this point we can not undertake
your project.

We wish you success in getting funding from other sources and also the
best in the implementation of your project.

Thanking you

Sincerely

Rajesh Haridas

Dear Rajesh:

Please find below the response to your queries.

Rajesh> Hello Ashok,

Rajesh> I went through the proposal couple of times. Definitely looks like a very ambitious project if
properly executed. I apologize for the delayed response. I have a few general questions regarding the
proposal. May be some of the points are already mentioned in the proposal and I might have skipped them
by mistake.

1. Is there any particular reason for selecting the specific geographical region
you have mentioned in the proposal, OR is this just a starting point.
The Reason for selecting the Geographical Area is
a. KG Eye hospital is situate within this area
b. Easy accessibility
c. Awareness is high among the general public, since the region is covered by KG
extensively for Cataract Screening for the last 7 years
2. Have you allocated funds for the treatment (medicines in particular)
Basic antibiotics and Vitamins will be given free of cost at the expense of KG.
3. Do you plan to cover more areas in the future ?
Later on, the Project will cover Adjacent Regions also - after covering the proposed areas
initially
4. What is the idea behind giving health card for all the students in the project
area? Do you have plans to visit these areas again for monitoring purpose? Are
these laminated cards?
The idea of giving Health Card is to keep a permanent record. These Cards will carry a
permanent Reference Number for which the records will be maintained at KG Eye
Hospital and these students will be periodically followed especially those with defects.
5. 150,000 students in 3 years with 2 doctors turns out be screening
approximately 80 students a day by each doctor, provided they work 6 days a week.
Is this practically possible? I have absolutely no idea how much time it takes to
screen each student.
Basic Screening Process is done very rapidly. In addition to the Ophthalmologist, the
team will include 6 Ophthalmic Technicians, PRO, and other paramedical staff. It will be
possible to screen 350 to 400 children on a single day. It should be possible to screen on
an average 1800 students every week. At this rate, we will need approximately 28-32
weeks to screen 50,000 children (after taking into consideration Exams & Vacation ).
Those who need to be worked up and treated at KG Eye Hospital will be brought over on
specific days once in a week or fortnight depending on the number and will be managed
by another team without affecting the screening process.
6. Do we have a quote for stationary goods and vehicle mentioned in the
proposal ?
The stationary and consumables are quoted in the project. It will be a contribution by KG.
Quotation for a vehicle is mentioned in the project.. A Vehicle has already been
purchased for which KG contributed 50% funds and an Organization called Latter Day
Saint Charities has contributed the rest 50%. However, Two Vehicles are needed. One is
for the transport of Children and the other one is for transporting the team.
7. Does the fund allocated for vehicle maintenance include the salary for
Driver?
Fuel, Maintenance of Vehicle, Salaries for all the staff will be a contribution from KG
for this Noble Project
8. Are you expecting any kind of support from the local governing bodies such
as a place to carry out the screening, power, etc..?
Local Administration will only give us permission to go ahead with project to cover the
Government Elementary schools; otherwise there will not be any other support.
9. What kind of institutions are you targeting? Is it only schools or do you have
plans to screen children in Orphanage and other institutions?
The Government Elementary Schools (Grades 1 to 5) are to be Covered 100%. Most of
the students at these schools are not financially sound to access any good private health
institutions. Moreover, this will be a unique project where an Ophthalmologist will be
involved right from the Initial Screening Process. Those orphanages in the vicinity of the
screening camps can be included as part of the overall screening effort.
10. Ashok, are you based in U.S or India ? Could you please provide me with
some contact numbers and convenient time so that I can discuss with you a little bit
more?
I can be reached on my mobile at 91-98430-33333 I am very much based in India. Please feel free to call
me with clarifications on this project, we will more than glad to provide you with more information.

(See attached file: Blindness in Children in India.doc)
Minoti: Dr Chandrasekar briefed me that the project IS addressed towards
disadvantaged children, and it is referred to in the original proposal.
Please review and let me know if you need further clarifications.

Meanwhile, please find enclosed a write-up of blindness in children in
India. This might assist you more in understanding the problem that we are
trying to address.

Thank you for your continued interest in pursuing this project with us.

Ashok,

As it turns out I have been asked to review this proposal and I simply have
not had the chance to even look at it. One basic question I know that will
come up is the target audience to whom KG provides services to. Vibha
basically looks to provide services to disadvantaged children who do not
have other resources. Again I don't know if this information is provided
in the proposal you sent but if you can clarify then I will try and find
some time this weeked to review the proposal. Sorry about the delay (blame
it on Mukund making me work too hard ;-)

Hope all else is well with you folks out in Coimbatore.

Take care
Minoti
