Across the 1996 Olympic games in Atlanta and the
2000 Games in Sydney, infectious diseases accounted
for less than 1% of healthcare visits.


But it does happen……
Surveillance during mass events
 Risk of infectious disease is low1,2,3

 Primary aspects
  Absolute increase in population and increase in population density
  Population movement: exposure to "foreign" diseases
 Secondary aspects
  Target for bioterrorism4
