shrubs get leaf spot, die back and root decline. Lawns

What Social Security Benefits Are Available in the Event of a Disability?

Almost everyone in the United States who is employed or self-employed is cov-
ered by Social Security, which pays benefits to or on behalf of covered workers
who retire, become disabled or die, assuming that eligibility requirements are met.
Disability Benefits
Eligibility: To qualify for monthly Social Security disability benefits, you must
be under age 65 and so severely disabled that you cannot perform any meaningful
work. You must also have a minimum number of quarters of Social Security cover-
age, based on your year of birth. Ordinarily, benefits do not begin until the sixth
full month of disability.
It can be difficult to qualify for Social Security disability benefits. In fact, from
1996 through 2006, an average of only about 48% of Social Security disability
claims was eventually approved. (Source: Annual Statistical Report on the Social
Disability Program, 2007; released September 2008)
Benefits: Your Social Security disability benefit equals your Primary Insurance
Amount (PIA) at the time you are disabled. Your spouse and eligible children can
also receive disability benefits, determined in the same way as if you had retired.
The Maximum Family Benefit, however, is lower than for retirement or survivor

What Does Social Security Mean by Disability?
From the Social Security Administration:
“The definition of disability under Social Security is different than other programs.
Social Security pays only for total disability. No benefits are payable for partial
disability or for short-term disability.
“Disability under Social Security is based on your inability to work. We consider
you disabled under Social Security rules if you cannot do work that you did before
and we decide that you cannot adjust to other work because of your medical
condition(s). Your disability must also last or be expected to last for at least one
year or to result in death.
“This is a strict definition of disability. Social Security program rules assume that
working families have access to other resources to provide support during periods
of short-term disabilities, including workers’ compensation, insurance, savings and

What Does This Mean for You?
According to the 2007 Annual Statistical Report on the Social Security Disability
Insurance Program for the period from 1996 through 2006:
An average of about 48% of disabled-worker applicants were ultimately
granted disability benefits.
The percentage of applicants awarded benefits at the initial claims level
averaged 31%.
An additional 17% of applicants were later awarded benefits as a result of
appeals and hearings.
Denied disability claims ultimately averaged about 49%.
The average monthly benefit paid in 2007 was $1,004.
