According to the number of springs relative to its size, Slovenia is among the world’s
richest countries with 87 thermal springs. On the basis of years of tradition, 25 thermal-
health centers developed, 18 of which have the status of natural health resorts and are
directly connected to the public health care network. The fifteen health resorts that are
united in the Association of Slovene Natural Health Resorts currently employ more than
3,200 people, 600 of them in the field of health care, and they have 13,500 beds
(including 7,600 hotel beds) and 37,000 square meters of thermal water surfaces at their
disposal. More than four million visits are recorded annually.

With a greater orientation toward relaxation and wellness programs, in the last few years
the majority of Slovene health resorts have renamed themselves ―thermal spas.‖ From
the developmental and competitive aspect, health resort and wellness tourism ranks
among the most successful segments of Slovene tourism. With Slovenia entering the
European Union, tourism too was entitled to acquire means from structural funds for the
2004–2006 period. The health resorts entered ten projects valued at 16.3 billion SIT
during this year’s call for tenders and thus acquired some 70% of approved funds for
cofinancing tourism projects.
