ACT 1 ACT 1, SCENE 1: VENICE (Antonio’s lodging) Antonio lying on the sofa. Salerio and Solanio on the chairs. -Lighting: soft orange throughout the whole scene (sunset) Antonio: Truly, I have no idea why I am so sad. I don’t even know where it came from or what it is.
- Lighting: Lightning and storm Sound effect: wave and wind Salerio: Solanio: You must be thinking about your ships tossing in the sea. Yes, if I have my money on those ships out there I will be plucking grasses to see where the wind blows. Everything that reminds me of my ships will make me sad.
Sound effect ends True. If my fortune is out there, any second I will be a poor man when my ship goes down. Now, I understand why you are miserable… No, no. Don’t worry. I did not invest everything in one ship or one place…yes, I am not worried about my merchandise. Then, there’s only one thing that will make you this sad. What? (winking at Salerio) L.O.V.E. LOVE!
Salerio:
Antonio:
Solanio: Antonio: Solanio:
Sound effect: Heaven/ angels (waving madly) No way. Of course not.
Antonio:
Sound effect: Disappointed Not in love? Then maybe you are sad because you are not happy.
Salerio:
[Bassanio, Gratiano, Lorenzo enter] Salerio: Here come your friends. We will leave now. (to Bassanio, Gratiano, Lorenzo) See you next time, my friends.
Music: Venice (soft)
Bassanio:
We must meet up sometimes.
Solanio & Salerio: OK. Lorenzo: (to Bassanio) Since you found Antonio, we will leave now. You know where to find us later.
[Gratiano walks towards Antonio] Bassanio: Gratiano: Antonio: No problem. (to Antonio) You look sick. You see the world too seriously. No, it’s just that I am aware of reality. Everyone plays a part in this world and I play a sad part. Then I will be the clown. I’ll be having wrinkles because I laugh too much. (laughs, then stop abruptly) Antonio, you see, there are people who don’t talk much, they want people to think they are smart but when they talk, Oh My God. It will hurt your ears. Well, then, I must leave now. (to Antonio) Farewell.
Gratiano:
Lorenzo:
[Gratiano and Lorenzo leave] Antonio: Bassanio: So…will you tell me about that girl… Antonio…Well, you should know by now…I am rich…WAS rich…but I…well, I spent…so much of my money…I even borrowed from you…and I haven’t return any yet…. To you I owe the most, not only money but also your love. Bassanio, my love. You can tell me anything…there’s no need to hide anything from me…my money and myself is for you and only you. You see, Antonio. When I was young, if I lose something, I will throw another at the same direction with the same strength. Then follow that thing to get back what I lost… you know how you sacrificed a lot for me…which is now lost… but if you could help me one more time, I am sure you can get back everything I owe you. Bassanio, you just wasted 30 SECONDS of my time. You can just say what you want without telling me that story.
Antonio:
Bassanio:
Antonio:
- Lighting: soft pink focus on Bassanio Bassanio: In Belmont, there lives a very rich lady. She is very B.E.A.U.TIFUL, more beautiful than you can ever imagine. And I think she likes me too…well, you know how girls can’t resist me…I am SO handsome.
Anyway, her name is…PORTIA. Everyone from everywhere came to woo her. Oh, Antonio. I am sure I will succeed only if I have enough money. Antonio: My dear, you know how all my fortunes are at sea. I don’t have money or anything with value for you now. But no worries, let’s see if we can get you anything from the moneylenders. Mention my name…I don’t mind.
[CURTAINS, Narrators] ACT 1, SCENE 2: BELMONT (Portia’s abode) Portia by the window. Nerissa by the caskets. - Lighting: soft yellow Music: Belmont (soft) Portia: Nerissa: Honestly, Nerissa I’m so sick of this world. You most certainly will be if you have as much miseries as your fortune. As far as I can see, you can be as sick eating too much as those who starve. It is better to be moderate. Wow, that is deep. Now, it’s your turn. If to do were as easy as to say. I can teach people what is good and what is bad but to be good is another thing. But let’s get back to the main point, I can’t choose who I like nor can I refuse the person I dislike. It’s so hard, Nerissa. I can neither choose nor refuse. Your father was intelligent. Thus he came up with these caskets. I have no doubt that the person who choose the right casket will also be the one you love and worthy of your love. Come, tell me, what do you think of those who came to woo you? Which one? Umm...The Neapolitan Prince? He...can say about nothing but his horse...BORING. The County Palatine? Well. He looks sad all the time. I can’t imagine marrying a worrywart like him. The French Lord, Monsieur Le Bon?

Portia:
I know it’s not good to mock others but he is quite a fellow. Jumping around and hopping about. He is so active that if I do marry him, it’s like marrying 20 husbands. What about the young Baron of England? He looks silly. I mean, his costume is a disastrous mix and match of everything from everywhere. Enough said. I don’t want to waste my time thinking about these unsuitable suitors. Well, you’re lucky because none of them will accept the casket test so all of them will be leaving today. Thank God. They are wise.
Nerissa: Portia:

Portia:
- Lighting: soft pink Nerissa: Oh, my lady. Do you still remember the educated and fine young Venetian that has been here when your father was alive? You’re not talking who I think you’re talking about right? Who are you thinking of? His name start’s with a ‘B’…and ends with ‘nio’. Don’t be silly, there’s a lot of people out there with name ending with a ‘nio’. (laughing) How true it is… (giggle) Anyway, I think he is the only one that suits you. You mean, Bassanio? Yes, well. Let’s hope you are right.
Portia: Nerissa: Portia: Nerissa:

- Lighting: yellow [Announcer enters] Portia: Yes, what is it this time?
Announcer: There’s a messenger from Prince of Morocco. He is to arrive tonight. Portia: Well, what do you know. Just when one leaves, another comes knocking. Let’s hope I will be saying goodbye to him just like the others before him.
[CURTAINS, Narrators]
ACT 1, SCENE 3: VENICE (Street) Both Shylock and Bassanio enter from one side of the stage. - Lighting: orange throughout the whole scene Music: Devellish/ evil (soft) Shylock: Bassanio: Shylock: Bassanio: Shylock: Bassanio: Shylock: Bassanio: Shylock: Three thousand ducats…well… Yup. For three months. Plus, Antonio will be bound. Hmm…for three months… Antonio bound… Well? Will you say yes? Three thousand ducats for three months. Antonio bound. Your answer? Antonio is a good man…Uh-hum. May I speak to him? You are welcome to dine with us. Oh no, no, no, no. I will buy with you, sell with you, talk with you, walk with you and so on; but, I will NOT eat with you, drink with you, nor pray with you.
[Antonio enters] Shylock: Bassanio: Shylock: Who’s there? (walking towards Antonio and introducing) This is Sir Antonio. (aside) I hate him for he is a Christian. But I hate him even more because he lends out money without interest. The interest rate in Venice is so low because of him. Curse him. Hello~ Shylock~ Eh-hem! Let me see…if I’m not wrong…I don’t have three thousand ducats at hand…But…I think Tubal, my friend can help me… (face Bassanio) how many months again? (saw Antonio) Bless you sir. We were just talking about you. Shylock, will you lend us the money or not? (to Bassanio) Did you tell him how much? Yes, three thousand ducats. And for three months.
Bassanio: Shylock:

Shylock: Antonio:
Shylock: Antonio: Shylock:
Ah, I forgot about that. (to Bassanio) you did tell me… Well? Sir Antonio, you, have insulted me, my money and the way I do business. Now, you are here, asking for my help. Should I bow down to you and say: ‘Sir, you spat on me last Wednesday; you called me dog and now as a token of gratitude, I’ll lend you this money’? I tell you what. I will spit on you again and I will call you dog again if I must. Just lend us the money not as a friend because friends do not, I tell you, do not make money from friends. But lend us the money as an enemy. And if we can’t return it to you, you can charge us. My, my, look at you…I want to be your friend. So I will kindly lend you the money without any interest. Weehee… Let’s get the bond signed. And just for fun, if you do not pay me back by three months, three thousand ducats, here in my place. I will have a pound of your flesh. Just for fun, you know. Nothing serious. I agree. You are very kind indeed. That’s ridiculous. Don’t sign it. Don’t worry. In two months, I will have three times more than three thousand ducats when my merchandise reaches here. Yes, why worry. What can I do with his pound of flesh? It’s not like I can sell human meat like mutton or beef, no one will buy. I’m trying to be friendly, if you don’t believe me, then goodbye. Don’t go. I will sign this bond. Then, let’s sign it.

My blood is still as red as yours or even redder for I am BRAVE. Even the most fairest lady in my country loved me for my bravery. I am not given any freedom to choose whom I’ll marry. But if my father had not prevented me with the casket test, I am sure you will have as much love from me as the other candidates who have been here. Then lead me to the caskets to try my luck. (Draws out his sword) By this sword, I swear I would do anything to win you, my lady. You must take your chances or not choose at all. If you do choose, and choose wrongly, you must never ask another lady for her hand anymore. Come, take me to the caskets.

Gold casket: Haven’t you heard? All that glisters is not gold. Many men have lost their lives just - to look at me. (Fans seductively and laughs wickedly, then sigh). If you were as wise as you are brave, tsk tsk tsk. Sorry, but you have failed. (Turns around) Morocco: (disappointed) Oh, well. Then, I will be preparing for a lonely life. Portia, Goodbye.

When we are there, Lord Bassanio, I will be so serious you will not believe it is me. Let’s see about that. But tonight, TONIGHT, I’ll be as wild as a horse. And you can’t stop me. Music dims
[Jessica goes in Shylock’s residence, Shylock comes on stage after a while] Music: Devellish/ evil Jessica! Jessica! Where are you?! Jessica! What are you doing?
Shylock:
[Launcelot rushes in and bumps into Shylock]
Shylock: Jessica: Shylock:

On and on, he talks about…mmmphmmm. [Gratiano cups Salerio’s mouth when he sees Lorenzo coming]. Ah, you guys are here. Here it is. (shouts) Hello~ anyone in?
Lorenzo:

[Shylock enters] Shylock: Jessica? Jessica, my dear. Bring me a cup of tea. (Looks around for Jessica) Jessica? (Calls out in distress) Jessica… Jessica… (Kneels down, wails…)
ACT 2, SCENE 5: VENICE (Street) Salerio and Solanio on the street. - Lighting: soft yellow throughout the whole scene Music: Venice (soft) Salerio: Bassanio has left for Belmont. Gratiano followed him but I don’t see Lorenzo anywhere.
Solanio: Salerio:
The Jew went to the Duke and they went to look for Bassanio’s ship. But he was too late. But someone told the Duke that Lorenzo and Jessica was seen somewhere else. I never heard anyone wail like that, so confused, so strange, so outrageous. As the dog Jew shouts at the street. (mimics) ‘My daughter! My ducats! Oh, my Jessica! Oh, my money! My gold! My precious daughter! Law, Justice…Find my daughter, find my money. My gold, stolen by my daughter. Find her. She has it.’ Oh and do you know there’s a shipwreck in the English channel? They say it’s from our country, let’s pray it’s not Antonio’s. You better tell him what you heard. Bassanio told Antonio that he would hurry back with the money to pay Shylock once he is successful in Belmont. Do you know what Antonio said? He said not to hurry, he told Bassanio to enjoy and take his sweet time there. He was crying as Bassanio leaves…

At her age, she’s rebellious… She is damned for it. Do you have any news? How’s Antonio’s ship? Oh ho, ho, ho, ho. This is good news for me. I will have my bond. Ask him to look at the bond. I’m sure if he can’t pay back your money, you won’t take his flesh….what’s it good for?

Has disgraced me, laughed at my losses, mocked me, scorned my nation and insulted my friends! And his reason? (pause) I am a Jew. Doesn’t a Jew have eyes? Doesn’t a Jew have hands? Organs? Senses? Feelings? Aren’t we fed with the same food? Hurt by the same weapons? Subject to the same diseases as a Christian is? If you prick us, do we not bleed? If you tickle us, do we not laugh? If you, poison us, do we not die? If I did something wrong to you, what will you do? Revenge. If you did something wrong to me, what should I do? (pause) Why, revenge! You, are the one who taught me this justice.

[CURTAINS, Narrators] ACT 2, SCENE 6: BELMONT (Portia’s abode) Prince of Arragon and his followers and Portia are out in the garden. Nerissa out in the garden, running into the room. Music dims and ends Noble prince, if you choose the casket with my picture in it, then you have succeeded. But if you fail, then you must leave immediately.
- Lighting: soft blue light focus on Arragon Arragon: I have sworn that I’ll never tell which casket I chose. If I fail, I’ll never ask another lady for her hand in marriage. And lastly, if I fail, I will leave immediately. Now, I pray that lady luck is with me. Let’s see the inscriptions.
- Lighting: soft pink light focus on each casket when they say their inscription, then focus on three. Sound effect: Nervous Gold casket: (turns around) Who chooses me shall get what many men desire. Silver casket: (turns around) Who chooses me shall get what he deserves. Lead casket: (turns around) Who chooses me must give and sacrifice all he has. Arragon: (Analyzing at the side) Hmm…what many men desire…No, I won’t choose Gold. I’ll not choose like everybody else. What I deserve? Sacrifice all I have? (Looks at the caskets again)
[Silver casket will be waving her handkerchief seductively; Gold and Lead caskets will be pointing at Silver casket] Arragon: (to Silver casket) My, my, look at you…Aren’t you, how should I say this…different, from the other two…
[Gold and Lead caskets nod approvingly] Arragon: Alright, I have decided! I choose you, Silver casket.
- Lighting: soft blue light now focus on Silver casket Sound effect: presenting [Silver casket moves forward and be a clown] Sound effect: disappointed - Lighting: blue light whole stage Arragon: Portia: (bewildered) What’s the matter? Is something wrong?
Arragon:
What’s this? A blinking idiot? You don’t look like Portia. Do I deserve a clown?
Silver casket: It’s a long process to make me as perfect as this. What you see now is just an illusion. There are fools who believe I’ll bring happiness, and you are one. So be gone! Arragon: I am a fool to agree on this casket test and now I’ll leave even more foolish than before.
Music: Arragon
[Arragon and his followers leave] - Lighting: soft yellow whole stage Music: Belmont Portia: Nerissa: He thinks too much just to decide… It’s destiny that he chose the wrong one.
[Announcer comes in] Announcer: My lady! Portia: Yes, my lady is here.
Announcer: A young Venetian messenger came to say that his lord is coming and brought a lot of gifts along with him. I have never seen such lovely gifts of love. It must have cost a ton. Portia: OOooo…stop it, stop it…you musn’t praise him too much. This is so exciting. Let’s go Nerissa. Let’s see who’s the rich guy…
[Portia runs out] Nerissa: Oh, Cupid, let it be Bassanio.
Sound effect: Grand
[Bassanio, Gratiano and his followers, Portia and Announcer enter] Portia: Music: Belmont (childish) Pretty please, stay another day or two… before you choose… I don’t want you to leave so early… (shy) I don’t want to lose you… I would love it if you could stay for a month or maybe two. Oh, dear, let me choose. I can’t wait… I’ll suffer till I know my fate… I want to know my destiny fast… Let me try my luck…
Bassanio:
Portia:
You are right, to wait is also a suffering…. Please choose…I am locked in one of them, if you find me then I am yours. But let me tell you something... I despise people who come and ask for my hand in marriage just because I am beautiful. I dislike those who only appreciate my appearance… they never get to know the person I am inside… You know…don’t love me just because I LOOK beautiful on the OUTSIDE…Love what is deep inside… Now, you can choose…
Sound effect: Nervous - Lighting: soft pink light focus on Gratiano and Nerissa all the time [Gratiano tries to woo Nerissa, tries all sort of method] - Lighting: soft blue light focus on each casket when they say their inscription, then focus on three. Gold casket: (turns around) Who chooses me shall get what many men desire. Silver casket: (turns around) Who chooses me shall get what he deserves. Lead casket: (turns around) Who chooses me must give and sacrifice all he has. Bassanio: What is shown outside will not last forever… what is inside will always be there. I do agree that dear Portia… However, this world is still deceived with appearances. Something wrong can be argued to be morally upright. An apple that looks good outside might be rotten inside. Correct. How true it is… please, do continue.
Portia:
[All three casket discussing. Gold and Silver caskets try to get Bassanio’s attention, Lead casket hiding behind them.] Bassanio: Thus, false appearance is but a treacherous trap. Thus I will not choose you, extravagant Gold casket.
[Gold casket disappointed and goes to the back] Bassanio: Nor will I choose you, pale Silver casket.
[Silver casket disappointed and goes to the back; Lead casket now in front looks shy] [Nerissa indicates that if Bassanio get Portia, she will accept Gratiano] Bassanio: And you, Lead, unlike the other two. You did not promise me anything. You would rather threaten me. And I dare you, Lead casket.
[Gold and Silver caskets will be swirling around Lead casket then Lead casket steps out]
- Lighting: blue light focus on Lead casket only Sound effect: presenting Portia: (Aside) Phew, that is so close. Oh, Love, please don’t let me get so energized. Make it less exhilarating.
[Lead casket presents Portia’s portrait] Sound effect: winning - Lighting: soft pink light whole stage Bassanio: (Jumps up and do a dance) Oh yeah, oh yeah. Oh oh oh yeah. Ehhem… (composes himself).
Lead casket: You! Who did not choose by view, have chosen truly. Be content and don’t look for more. The lady is yours. Bassanio: I can’t believe it. Is this true? I won? (to Gratiano) I’m not dreaming right, pinch me.
[Gratiano pinches him] Bassanio: Gratiano: Portia: OUCH. Yup, you’re not dreaming. Lord Bassanio, you have chosen wisely and now I’m yours. Just then, these servants and this house are mine. And I am queen of my own life. But now, these are all yours, my lord. I give you this ring and if you lose this ring or give it away then I will not admit that you are my husband. Dear Portia, if I don’t have this ring on me, then you can confidently say that I am dead. Oh, congratulations. This is so…so…so… perfect. (sighs)
Bassanio:
Nerissa:
[Bassanio and Portia look at each other lovingly and bashfully] Gratiano: I am glad you have found you’re love and I congratulate you (Pulls Bassanio away from Portia) but I am sure you must congratulate me too because when you get married so will I. (realization) Say what?! (laughs) oh, I’ll congratulate you. If you can find someone who wants you. (laughs) Thank you my lord. Because you helped me, I found my wife. While you found Portia, I found Nerissa. (contented sigh). She promised me that if you are successful then I can get her love. Is this true, Nerissa?
Bassanio:
Gratiano:
Portia;
Nerissa: Bassanio: Gratiano:
Yes, if it pleases you. Then we will have two weddings together. It will be grand. (to Nerissa) Let’s bet a thousand ducats that we’ll get a baby boy first. But who’s there? Lorenzo and the gang.
[Lorenzo, Jessica and Salerio enter] Music dims and ends Lorenzo, Salerio! Welcome. My lord. I met Salerio on the way and he insisted that I come along with him. Yup. It’s Antonio’s wish. (gives Bassanio a letter)

[Bassanio shakes his head in disbelieve and looks devastated] Portia: Bassanio: What’s wrong? You don’t look well. Oh, Portia. When I first came here, I told you I’m of a rich family. It’s true but I came here with money I borrowed from a friend. Now, that friend of mine is in danger. He is most kind and dear to me. Then you must go to him. Bring him six thousand. Double the money you borrowed. With your permission my dear, I thank you.

VENICE (Street) Shylock and the gaoler on one side. Solanio and Antonio on one side. - Lighting: soft yellow light throughout the whole scene Music: Venice Shylock: Antonio: Shylock: Gaoler, look at him closely. Don’t let him run away. He owes me money. Shylock, listen to me. I’ll have my bond. You don’t have to tell me what to do. I’ll have my bond. You don’t need a reason to call me a dog. But since you think I’m a dog, be afraid, be very afraid. I’ll bite you. (growls). Please, listen. Try to listen to me. I’ll have my bond. I don’t want to listen to you. (closes his ear). Nah nah nah nah nah nah. (sticks out tongue) Shut up, don’t talk. I’ll have my bond. (choking action) He is so…arghh Leave him alone. He wants my life. I know he hates me. I’m sure the Duke will not grant this. The Duke must not deny Shylock justice. It’s for the betterment of Venice. If the Duke denies Shylock, there’ll be injustice in Venice. My only wish is that Bassanio comes to see me for the last time before I’m sentenced.

[CURTAINS] ACT 3, SCENE 2: BELMONT (Portia’s abode) Lorenzo and Portia in the room. Nerissa, Jessica and Announcer outside. - Lighting: blue light throughout the whole (moonless night) Music: Belmont Lorenzo: Portia: Madam, I must praise you. You are very kind. I thank you. I like being kind. But let’s not talk about this. Listen to me, I am going to leave this house in your hands until my lord Bassanio comes back. I have to go to church to pray for my husband’s safe return. Only Nerissa will go with me. Will you say yes? Madam, with all my heart I will take good care of this house.
Lorenzo:
[Jessica comes into the room]
Portia: Lorenzo: Jessica: Portia:
Then, farewell. May you be blessed. My best wishes to you too. Thank you. Best of luck to you too, Jessica.
[Lorenzo and Jessica leaves, Nerissa and Announcer comes into the room] Portia: (gives a letter to the Announcer) I know you are an honest man so I hope you will be now. Take this letter to my uncle, Doctor Bellario in Padua. He will give you some documents and some clothes. Bring them to Venice. I’ll be waiting for you there. Please, be quick.
Announcer: I’ll be so fast you can’t see me. (goes out in very slow motion) Portia: Nerissa: Portia: Come, Nerissa. I have a plan. We will see our husband very soon. Will they see us? They will but they won’t recognize us. I’ll tell you the plan on the way to Venice.
[Portia and Nerissa leave] [Launcelot and Jessica enter into the garden] Launcelot: Look at you. You are an unfaithful daughter. You will be damned. There is no hope for you. My husband will save me. He has made me Christian. He is even worse than you are. There’s a lot of Christians already in this world. Now, he made another Christians. And both of you will make a few more Christians. There’s no more place for me to stay.
Jessica: Launcelot:
Music dims and ends
[Lorenzo enters] Music: romantic I’ll tell my husband what you said. Here he comes. I will become jealous of you Launcelot, if you keep taking my wife away with you.
Jessica: Lorenzo:
Jessica:
No, you don’t have to worry. Launcelot and I are not friends anymore. (pouts) He said I will not go to heaven because I’m a Jew’s daughter and he said you are not good too because you are converting Jews to Christians. (to Launcelot) You, my friend is even worse. How could you say that to my loving wife. Go in and ask the servants to prepare dinner.
Lorenzo:
[Launcelot enters the room] - Lighting: soft pink light focus on Lorenzo and Jessica. Lorenzo: Jessica: So, Jessica. What do you think of lord Bassanio’s wife? No words can be said to describe her. It is best if Bassanio appreciates her because there will never be anyone better than her. He has found the best. And you have the best husband in this world. You better appreciate me because you will never find anyone better.

[CURTAINS, Narrators] ACT 4, SCENE 1: VENICE (Court) Duke at the center. Antonio and his gang on the right side. - Lighting: yellow light throughout the whole scene Music: serious/ justice (court-like) Duke: Antonio: Duke: Is Antonio here? Yes. Your honour, I’m prepared. I feel sorry for you. You have unfortunately associated yourself with a stubborn person who doesn’t have any mercy in him at all. I heard that you’ve tried your best to help me. I thank you. (to one of the officers) Go on, call in the Jew. He is waiting at the door. Here he comes.
Antonio: Duke: Salerio:
[Shylock enters]
Duke:
Shylock, everyone think and I think so too that you will stop here and relieve us of this wickedness. If you could show us mercy, we will be deeply touched. I will have my bond. That is all I ask for. All I want is justice and I’m sure you want everyone in this world to know that Venice is a very fair and just city. I’ll have my pound of flesh. It is all I want and all I ever need. That is not an answer you beast. What does it matter to you? Do all men kill the things they do not love? Whatever. Bassanio, leave him. He won’t listen to anyone. He wants nothing but my flesh so let’s save us the time and begin the judgement. (to Shylock) I owe you three thousand ducats but I’ll give you six thousand ducats. Just release Antonio. Give me more. (pause) Give me everything. It’s useless. I don’t want anything. I just want justice. How can you expect mercy if you don’t have any mercy? But I don’t need any mercy because I didn’t do anything wrong. Now, all I’m asking for is justice. I have sent for a lawyer, Doctor Bellario who will come here today. Your honour, there’s a messenger there from Padua. (to Nerissa) Come in.
Shylock:

Duke: Salerio: Duke:
[Nerissa enters] Duke: Nerissa: Are you from Padua? From Bellario? Yes, your honour.
[Nerissa gives Duke the letter, Duke reads it while Shylock sharpens his knife] Bassanio: Shylock: Gratiano: Why are you sharpening your knife? To get my pound of flesh. Damn you. You are not human. You’re like a beast. Starving for blood.
Shylock: Duke: Nerissa: Duke:
Don’t shout. You’ll hurt your lungs. I’m only here for justice. Bellario said he sent a young lawyer in his place. Where is he? He’s waiting outside if you’ll admit him. With all my heart.
[Nerissa leaves and comes in with Portia] Duke: Portia: Duke: Portia: Shylock: Portia: Antonio: Portia: Antonio: Portia: Shylock: Portia: Welcome, please take your place. Which one of you is Antonio? And which one is the Jew? Antonio, Shylock please stand forth. (to Shylock) Is your name Shylock? Shylock is my name. (to Antonio) So you are the one in danger. So it is. Do you admit you signed the bond? Yes. Then the Jew must be merciful. What?! Why must I? Because if you are merciful then you are more than a human. Only God can be merciful in such cases. If you can forgive him, then you have the grace of God. I want justice and my bond. (to Duke) Can’t this case be settled with the payment? Yes. I have six thousand ducats here. It’s all his if he would accept it. If he won’t have it. I can give him my hand, my head or my heart. Please if you could just make sure he doesn’t get what he wants. I’m sorry but we can’t do that. Law is law, justice will prevail. We can’t change the law. A Daniel has come to court. Oh wise judge.
Shylock: Portia: Bassanio:

Portia:
Let me look at the bond.
[Shylock hands her the bond and she reads it, Shylock continues sharpening his knife] Portia: Shylock, are you sure you don’t want the money? It’s more than what they owe you. How many times do you want to ask me? I said I want my bond and I want justice. Well then, you will have your pound of flesh. (to Antonio) Prepare yourself. Oh noble judge! Excellent. Excellent. Where’s the balance to weigh the flesh? I have it prepared. (takes out a balance from his bag) (to Antonio) You, do you have anything to say? Not much. I am prepared. (to Bassanio) Give me your hand, Bassanio. Farewell. Don’t be sad that I’m doing this for you. Tell your wife about me. Tell her how much I loved you. Ask her if Bassanio was loved. Only regret that you’ll lose a friend but I’ll not regret that I’m doing this for you. Antonio, I am married to a wife whom I love very much but, life itself, my wife and all the world is not worth your life. I would sacrifice everything, lose it all just to save you. Your wife won’t like it if she heard what you said. I too, have a wife whom I love. I wish she is dead and goes to heaven so she has the power to punish this Jew. It’s good that she’s not here. Is this how a Christian husband treat their wife? I have a daughter married to a Christian, how I wish she married a thief or a murderer. Order in the court. Order in the court. A pound of the merchant’s flesh is yours. The law allows it and the court awards it. Most rightful judge.

Music dims and ends Sound effect: threatening [Shylock moves forward to get Antonio’s flesh] Portia: Hold on! There’s something missing. It says here… you can have a pound of flesh but no blood. So, go ahead and take your flesh but there must not be any blood. If he sheds a drop of blood then your land and goods will be confiscated.
- Lighting: soft yellow light Gratiano: Shylock: Bassanio: Portia: Oh upright judge! Really? Then… then I’ll take the money. Here, take it. No, you said you want justice. And justice only. So you can only take the pound of flesh, nothing else. Oh noble judge! A second Daniel! I’ll take my three thousand ducats. Just what they owe nothing more. You swore you don’t want any money and you’ll have your bond. FINE. I’ll leave. I’ll take nothing.
Gratiano: Shylock: Portia: Shylock:
Music: sad
[prepares to leave, puts back his knife and balance] Portia: Wait. You have threatened a Venetian’s life and with this, you are charged. Half of your fortune will go to Antonio, another half will go to the state. And the Duke will decide whether to have your life. Therefore, kneel down and beg for mercy.
[Shylock falls to his knee] Duke: I will not take your life. But half of your money will go to Antonio while the state will take the other half. No. Take my life. If you take all the money I’ve work for, you may as well kill me. There’s no reason for me to be alive anymore. (to Antonio) What can you do for him?
Shylock:
Portia:
Antonio:
I will not take half of his estate. But I will be in charge of it until Shylock dies. When he is dead, the money will be given to his daughter and the young man who married her. Other than that, he, Shylock, must be a Christian. Are you contented Jew? I...I…I’m contented. Right it down and ask him for his signature. I beg that you let me leave first, I do not feel well. I’ll sign it later.
Portia: Shylock: Portia: Shylock:
[Shylock leaves] Duke: Portia: Duke: Young judge, you are welcome to dine with me. I’m sorry, but I have to go to Padua right after this. Very well then. Antonio, you must repay this kind judge.
[Duke and officers leave] Bassanio: Portia: Bassanio: Oh, noble judge. Please take this money as a token of gratitude. No, there’s no need. I must leave now. Dear sir, I insist that you take something from us. Not as payment but as a remembrance. you are very persistent. Very well, then. Give me your gloves.
Portia:
[Bassanio gives her his gloves] Portia: Bassanio: And I’ll take the ring. I’ll take nothing else but the ring. But sir, this ring is very important to me. It was given to me by my wife. I have sworn not to take it off. I can give you other rings but this ring, I can’t. I’m sure if you told her whom you gave it to and why, she won’t be angry with you. Bassanio, please let him have the ring. Do it for me. He saved my life. OK. For you, Antonio. I owe it to you.
Portia:
Antonio: Bassanio:
[Bassanio gives her the ring]
Portia:
(to Gratiano) And you sir, I would like that ring for my clerk here for he has help me in a lot of the documents. I’m sure he would like a token of gratitude. But…but…this ring…it’s from my wife… I promised. Again? The same reason? Have all of you planned to trick us with the same story so we can get nothing from you? Sir, no. It’s true… I… Oh, sir if you must. (takes off his ring). Here, take it before I change my mind. (shoves it to Nerissa while closing his eyes). I am most honoured. I’ll take my leave now. May peace be with you.

Music softens I think that’s Portia’s voice. Welcome home. We have been praying for our husband’s safe return. Have they returned? No, they are not. But a messenger said they’ll be here soon. (to Nerissa) Go, Nerissa. Tell the servants they must not tell anyone that we’ve been away. (to Lorenzo and Jessica) You two must not say anything either.

Portia:
[Gratiano looks for Nerissa and they start arguing] Bassanio: Portia: Gratiano: Portia: Gratiano: Thank you. Here, let me introduce you to my friend, Antonio. I’ve heard a lot about you. (to Nerissa) I swear to God that I gave it to the judge’s clerk. What’s this? A quarrel already? It’s about a ring she gave me. It’s carved with ‘love me and don’t leave me’. Why are you talking about the inscription or the value? You are the one who swore you’ll wear it till you die! You’re the one who swore you’ll never take it off! You’re the one who swore you’ll take it with you to the
Nerissa:
grave. If you can’t do it then don’t swear at all. Gave it to a judge’s clerk? Like I would believe that. I swear to God. That clerk must be a woman. Gratiano: No! Believe me, that clerk is a man. He’s about your height. That little boy begged for it as a fee, he did all the documents. I can’t bear to deny him. It’s your fault. Honestly, if I were Nerissa, I would think you’ve given it to another woman. I gave my love, Bassanio a ring too. I’m SURE he will never give the ring to anyone. Right, Bassanio? (Aside) I think it’s better if I cut off my left hand. Then I can say it’s lost with my hand. But, my lord Bassanio has given his ring to the lawyer that save Antonio’s life. After that, she begged for my ring to be given to the clerk. Bassanio~ which ring did you give? I hope not the one I gave you. I would be lying if I said I didn’t give it away. But as you can see, there’s no ring on my finger. My god, I will not sleep with you until I see that ring. And I swear I will not until I see my ring. Please. If you only knew why I gave the lawyer the ring and how I unwillingly gave him the ring. How am I supposed to believe you? You gave the first gift I ever give to you. For all I know, you might have given it to another woman. Stop it all of you! This is all my fault.

Here, this is the letter that would tell you that we are the lawyer and the clerk that saved Antonio. And Lorenzo can be the witness that Nerissa and I left right after you left for Venice. And Antonio, I have good news for you. Your ship is safe and on the journey to Venice now. Were you the lawyer? And I don’t even recognize you? And you’re the clerk that made a fool out of me.
