                        A GREAT EASTER HOLIDAY IDEA!

STUCK for an idea over the forthcoming school Easter holiday…? Why not visit the scenic

Bodmin & Wenford Railway, Cornwall’s only full size (standard gauge) railway still regularly

operated by steam locomotives…?

Steam trains operate DAILY over the Easter holiday period from Friday 8 to Wednesday 27 April inclusive

– a total of 20 days.

From 12-21 April inclusive the Railway will be operating its Blue timetable, with steam train departures

from Bodmin General Station at 10.50am, 11.50am, 1.50pm and 2.50pm.

Over the four days of the Easter weekend (22-25 April), which this year is at the end of the school holiday,

the Railway is having an EASTER EGGS-TRAVAGANZA, offering the promise of steam of all shapes and

sizes, an Easter Egg Hunt and a FREE Easter egg for all children.

During Easter the Railway will be displaying its two smallest steam locomotives, Alfred and Judy, which were

built by Bagnall of Stafford in 1953 and 1937 respectively and spent all their working lives on shunting

duties at Par Docks on the south coast of Cornwall. They are quite possibly the most famous engines on

the Cornish branch line, as Alfred and Judy were an inspiration for Reverend W. Awdry to create the

characters Bill and Ben in the original Thomas the Tank Engine books.

A special timetable will be in operation on all four days of the EASTER EGG-TRAVAGANZA event, with

six departures from the Railway’s main station at Bodmin General at 10.30am, 11.30am, 12.40pm, 1.40pm,

2.50pm and 3.50pm. All trains will be steam hauled by one of the beautifully restored and maintained ex-

Great Western Railway tank engines based on the line.

All trains over the school Easter holiday period (from 12 April) will have an on-train Buffet & Bar Car

serving hot and cold drinks, snacks and light refreshments. There is also a Refreshment Room at Bodmin

General Station and a Café in the old signalbox at Bodmin Parkway Station, both serving a range of home

made food, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. The Railway’s Giftshop at Bodmin General will also be open

throughout the weekend, offering a good range of souvenirs, gifts, books, models, postcards etc.

Bodmin General Station is well signposted from the A30/A38/A389 (follow the brown tourist signs) and

there is a free car park directly adjacent to the station. For those who may like to come by train, main

line train services operate to Bodmin Parkway, where there is easy cross-platform interchange with

Bodmin & Wenford Railway services.

“We offer a unique and very special experience,” comments Richard Jones, BWR General Manager, “and,

with trains running every day over the school Easter holiday, there are plenty of opportunities to discover

the excitement and nostalgia of steam travel with a journey back in time. We look forward to welcoming

visitors old and new for a great day out this spring.”
