Section 3. Hazards Identification - Summary of Primary Effects and Critical Hazards
Acute Health Effects

Due to the toluene content, this product is harmful if swallowed, inhaled, or absorbed through skin. Severely irrititating to the eyes and skin. Symptoms of exposure may include burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breathe, headache, nausea, and vomiting. Exposure can cause lung irritation, chest pain, and edema, which may be fatal. Vomiting of this material following ingestion may lead to aspiration into the lungs resulting in chemical pneumonia or pulmonary edema. Symptoms of exposure may include burning sensation, coughing, wheezing, laryngitis, shortness of breath, headache, nausea, and vomiting. May cause nervous system disturbances. Inhalation studies have demonstrated the development of inflammatory and ulcerous lesions of the penis, prepuce, and scrotum in animals. Highly toxic to aquatic organisms (CL 287,088).

Chronic Health Effects

Environmental Hazards

Section 4. First Aid Measures - (by medical responders using "Universal Precautions")
Eye Contact Skin Contact Inhalation Ingestion

Severely irritating to the eyes. Immediately flush eyes with running water for at least 15 minutes, keeping eyelids open. Seek medical attention immediately. Severely irritating to the skin. May be absorbed through the skin. Avoid skin contact - in the event of skin contact, wash thoroughly with soap and water. Seek medical attention. Toxic via inhalation of vapors. May cause lung irritation, chest pain, and edema which may be fatal. If adverse effects occur as a result of inhalation exposure, remove victim to fresh air and seek medical attention immediately. If ingested, seek medical attention immediately. Do not induce vomiting.

There is no specific antidote for exposure to this material. Treatment of overexposure should be directed at the control of symptoms and the clinical condition. Because of increased risk of pulmonary edema or chemical pneumonia due to aspiration of toluene into the lungs, vomiting should be induced only under professional supervision.

Section 5. Fire-Fighting Measures
Extinguishing Media and Instructions Special Exposure Hazards Special Fire Fighting Protective Equipment

Use DRY chemicals, CO2, water spray or foam. Use as little water as possible. Avoid breathing vapors or fumes from burning materials. Avoid contact of spilled material and runoff with soil and surface waterways. Collect contaminated fire fighting water and prevent entry into drains and waterways. Full fire-fighting attire and approved certified self-contained breathing apparatus worn only by qualified persons.

Section 6. Accidental Release Measures
Small Spill Guidelines Large Spill Guidelines

Eliminate all sources of ignition. Absorb with a suitable absorbent. Use a spark-proof tool to scoop up solid or absorbed material and place into appropriate labeled waste container. Use good laboratory practices. Initiate company's spill response procedures immediately. Keep people out of area. Eliminate all sources of ignition. Put on appropriate personal protective equipment (see Section 8 - respiratory protection for a large spill should include an SCBA). Dike spill area and do not allow product to reach sewage system and surface or ground water. Provide notification of any reportable spill to authorities. Absorb spilled material with a suitable absorbent material. Collect spilled material using spark-proof shovels or other tools. Place material into drums or other containers for appropriate disposal (See Section 12 for environmental risks and 13 for disposal information). This material is toxic to aquatic organisms. Spilled material or fire water contaminated with this material must be contained and prevented from being discharged to any waterway, sewer or drain.

Environmental Precautions

Section 7. Handling and Storage
Handling (ventilation and fire prevention) Storage (conditions and limitations)

Avoid heat, flame, and other sources of ignition. Manipulate only under an adequate fume hood or local exhaust ventilation system. Do not breathe gas/fumes/ vapour/spray. Avoid contact with eyes, skin or clothing. Wash contaminated skin with soap and water. Wash contaminated clothing before reusing. Keep only in the original container in a cool well-ventilated place. Store and use away from heat, sparks, open flame, or any other ignition source.

Provide exhaust ventilation or other engeneering controls to minimize the airborne concentrations of vapors.

Chemical splash goggles. Safety glasses with side shields. Chemical resistant clothing sealed at the neck and wrist. Gloves (impervious). Respirator selection must be based on known or anticipated exposure levels, the hazards of the product, and the safe working limits of the selected respirator. If required, use an MSHA/NIOSH approved/certified respirator with organic vapor cartridges providing an appropriate protection factor for the exposure involved. In the event of a large spill of this material, use a self-contained breathing apparatus.
