CHAIRMANS NOTE:

Dear Members,

Greetings. I believe most of you must be enjoying the change of weather in Mombasa.
Cooler and pleasant. It’s also been a bit of a cool month at the Club – less activity and
so less to report on.

However, I am glad to report that we have made the decision to take over the kitchen
as a Club run outlet. The renovations in the main kitchen are complete and a kitchen
launch is definitely planned for 16th July 2004. Watch for more details. Any
suggestions on menu setting are welcome. Volunteers to assist the Catering Sub-
Committee are also welcome. Please contact Messer’s Gitongu, Raman Patel, Dr. Jari,
Donald Shipenzi if you have any ideas or suggestions. PLEASE TURN UP FOR THE
KITCHEN LAUNCH ON 16TH JULY 2004.

Those of us who are keen to learn something new – have you tried out the Ballroom
Dance Classes being held every Friday evening??

On sports I would like to throw a big cheer for the Snooker section for having resumed
competitive snooker with the Pullin Gandhi Handicap Snooker Tournament – this
section had gone dormant for a while and we hope to see more tournaments. Maybe
Squash section can now rise to the challenge?

                                     - - 1
For all you Rugby fans and supporters – I am sending out an appeal on behalf of the
section. The sponsorship taps need to start flowing to support the section’s
participation in the National League. This is one of the few sections that
participates competitively nationally and produces good results. Their main
fundraiser, the Driftwood Sevens, fell a little short due to being let down by a key
sponsor. However, there are enough well-wishers out there who can assist and I am
calling on you all. PLEASE GET IN TOUCH WITH THE SECTION TO HELP SORT OUT
THEIR NEEDS.

The other sections that have taken up our challenge to participate more actively
nationally have been Hockey Men‟s and Hockey Ladies. Ladies, we are glad that each
one of you escaped unhurt from your accident in your last outing to Nairobi. We hope
other sections take up this challenge to participate nationally in competitive sports.

I had mentioned our tree planting exercise in a previous newsletter. I am glad to
report that we will soon start by planting about 100 trees within our Club compound.
Details on how members can participate in our “DEDICATE A TREE” program will be
communicated in due course after those trees have been planted.
This month, the Club will embark on relocating the paths leading to the Squash courts
and Bowling Green. Any inconveniences – please bear with us. More lights are also
going to be added around the hockey and football pitches – so you night walkers and
joggers will have a much larger circuit soon.

Finally, one of our long serving employees Mwema Nzine passed away after a short
illness. He was a groundsman popularly known as “Captain” and was a loyal employee for
18 years. May his Soul Rest in Peace.

God Bless.

VIVEK MEHTA
CHAIRMAN.

                          SECTIONS REPORTS

BOWLING:
MRS. TARA SHAH WINS THE MSC SINGLES BOWLING
                        TOURNAMENT.
Two bowling tournaments were played during the month of May 2004.

The first one was the Monthly Mug played on Saturday, 15th May 2004. A total of 13
players entered this competition and the format of the game was 2 TRIPS and 2
RINKS and full 18 ends were played, the Rinks playing against the rinks and the Trips
playing against the Trips. The team skipped by C. C. Shah consisting of Raman Patel and
Sakina Mamujee won this competition on a shot average. The runners were the team of
Tara Shah, Tayabali Kudrati, Lata Shah and Sandhya Weerarathu. A remarkable
performance to note during the above competition was that the team of C. C. Shah on
one end took 8 shots out of their total 8 woods. A great team achievement.

The prestigious Club Singles was played over the two weekends of 29 th/30th May and
5th/6th June ’04 on a league basis. It was rather discouraging to note that only 10
bowlers out of 33 bowlers in the section took part in this competition. Two groups
were formed and each group had to play 4 games each of 18 full ends. The eventual
winner of this tournament on shot average was the Captain of the MSC Bowling Section,
Mrs. Tara Shah and the runner-up was Mr. C. C. Shah. Congratulations to all the above
winners. Keep it up!
Have a good day.

                                     - - 3
SQUASH
MSC SQUASH TRIP TO TANZANIA
MSC Squash team returned from a 3 day trip to Tanga and Dar-es-salaam. On Friday
28th May 2004 MSC played Tanga at the Burhani Club. Vimal Shah played Eric Allard
and won 3-0. In the second game Clement Agina beat Hatim Karimjee 3/0.

The third game between Tanveer Diamond and Shakil was close with Diamond edging
out his opponent 2/1. Saturday 29th July ’04 was a big day with Dar Gymkhana and the
Zanzibar team waiting at the beautiful Dar Gymkhana Club. Our young squad of five
juniors were very eager and daring to play the senior opposition. They met their
match with Tanveer losing 3/0 [9-1, 9-1, 10/8] to Iddi of Zanzibar. In the second
game Vimal Shah was stretched to 5 games before winning 6/9, 4/9, 9/3, 9/2, 9/6.

The third game was a battle of veterans between 67 year Col. Kashmiri of Dar
Gymkhana and our own Mustaq Zavery. Mustaq edged out his opponent 3-2, 9/2, 8/10,
8/10, 9/5, 9/4. The fourth game between Adam [Zanzibar] and Yusuf Zavery was a
one sided affair with Adam winning 3-0 [9/1, 9/3, 9/4]. In the other matches H.
Virjee [Dar] beat A. Kamdar 2/1, Michael [Dar] beat C. Agina 3/0, 9/7, 9/6, 9/3.
Juma [Zanzibar] beat M. Zavery 3/0, 9/3, 9/0, 9/5. Riak [Dar] beat V. Shah 3/1, 4/9,
9/5, 9/0, 9/7, and David [Dar] beat C. Agina 3/0, 9/2, 9/7, 9/2.

The tournament ended on Sunday 30th May 2004 with the fit Zanzibars winning most
of their matches followed by Dar Gymkhana and Mombasa Sports Club taking the last
position. The trip was a very good experience for the Mombasa Sports Club young
squad as they learnt a lot new techniques for the future.
