  Message from Mrs. Hercules

It is hard to believe that we are in the third quarter of the school year. This is the time of year when
everything kicks into high gear for educators. Our third through fifth grade teachers are busy preparing
students for the upcoming MAP test this spring. In addition to the great instruction that has been taking
place all year, those teachers are making sure that our students will be going into the test confident with
their test taking strategies and abilities. Attendance is crucial during this testing period.

It is also the time of year that district and building administrators begin to plan for the upcoming school
year. Our plan is to maintain high levels of character education and instruction while simultaneously
looking to the future through the continuous school improvement cycle. Thank you for the care you give
your children and the trust you place in our school. It is a pleasure to work in partnership with you for the
  benefit of your children!

  Make-Up Snow Days
Students now have school the following days in March: March 4, 21, 22, 23, 24, 25 in addition to April
25 to make up for the recent snow days. Hopefully, we are done with snow days this year!

                              Congratulations, Miss McLean!
Miss Megan McLean, fourth grade teacher, was selected by her peers as Warren’s
Teacher of the Year! What a great person to represent Warren Elementary!

                              Congratulations, Miss McLean!

You want your child to read well and enjoy it, but you’re not sure how to achieve this? Sound familiar?
You’re not alone. Today, millions of children fall short when it comes to reading comprehension. The
good news is that there are simple and proven steps – the 7 Keys – that parents and teachers can use to
turn the “chore” of reading into a rewarding adventure for any child.

You are invited!

CONGRATULATIONS FIFTH GRADE SPECTRA
We would like to congratulate fifth grade spectra students for winning the Show-Me-A-Movie contest.
The contest had 4 categories that students could enter. The fifth grade entered in two of them and won in
BOTH categories. They put forth a lot of effort to accomplish these results. Congratulations fifth grade
for your effort and success!

Read to Succeed
Warren is participating in the Read to Succeed program sponsored by Six Flags and Discovery Education.
Every student who completes six hours of recreational reading before the due date is eligible for a free
admission ticket at a participating Six Flags theme park. Don’t forget to log in those minutes of reading
that your child does each night on the sheet provided by your child’s teacher. The deadline to turn in the
reading log is Wednesday, February 23rd. Join in the fun, and keep on reading!

Library News

What’s your top three? I’ve been thinking about the top three on any list. By now you probably have a
top three of things to do on a Snow Day! I hope Reading is one of them!

                                                                                      office at

February is Black History Month. We have books displayed in our biography section honoring famous
Black Americans. Our top three at Warren are George Washington Carver, Roberto Clemente and Martin
Luther King Jr. Right now we have books from three February holidays on our round table. Valentine
books include crafts, fact books, and made-up stories. Chinese New Year books include poems, facts
about the celebration, and picture books. Our Ground Hog Day stories sometimes include facts about this
custom that originated in Europe.

In grades 1-3 the last of the 10 nominated SHOW ME books are being read now. Soon students will come
home with a bookmark listing all 10. Which one will your child vote for? I will announce the top three in
the next Howell-er.

Our students in grades 4-5 have just until March 1 to finish their 4th of the 12 nominated MARK TWAIN
books. It’s hard to predict which will be the top three at our school. But I will tell you that Stolen
Children, Magic Half, Found, Leanin’ Dog, and School Spirit have had the most book clubs (when 8
students who have read the same book come to the library to discuss it). Only students who have read 4 or
more will be given ballots.

Congratulations to our three Serious Series Readers who have finished during our Snow Days. They are:
Grade 3 Kaden Hart & Annika Clark
Grade 5 Madison Bixler
Is your child an SSR? (Serious Series Reader) here are only 10 weeks left until May 1. I would like to
see your child meet their goal and finish strong in 2011.

Mrs. Flandermeyer

HOOPS FOR HEART
Warren Elementary students will soon participate in the annual Hoops for Heart
program. This worthwhile program helps raise student awareness of heart disease and
the importance of physical activity as well as encouraging good citizenship and
volunteerism as students have the option to collect donations for the not-for-profit
American Heart Association. Hoops for Heart is promoted through our physical
education classes. Hoops for Heart for Grades 2-5 will begin on February 15 and end
February 17. Information packets were sent home this week. Donations will be due by
February 25th. Coach Carron (851-5950) or Coach Eubank (851-5145) will be happy to
answer any questions regarding this worthwhile cause.

2010-2011 Snow Make-up Day Schedule
With Francis Howell’s recent snow days, many have questions about make-up days. The District calendar has six snow
days built into it. Snow days, up to 10, will be made up. A decision has been made to not make up any snow days in
excess of 10, which is allowable by state statute. Below is a schedule of this year’s snow days and the designated make-
up days for both elementary and secondary.

                                                                       ELEMENTARY CALENDAR
