 DESCRIPTION OF TOWN

- SHORT HISTORY AND LOCATION

STUDYING IN THE HEART OF AMSTERDAM
THE INTT IS LOCATED IN THE HISTORIC CENTRE OF AMSTERDAM. THE CITY OF AMSTERDAM IS THE CAPITAL OF THE NETHERLANDS,
AND IS ONE OF EUROPE'S MOST FREQUENTLY VISITED CITIES. ACCORDING TO THE LONELY PLANET 'AMSTERDAM COMBINES A HUGE
CASE OF BIG CITY EXUBERANCE WITH SMALL-TOWN MANAGEABILITY; IT DOESN'T TAKE MUCH MORE THAN CHAINING YOUR BIKE TO A

BRIDGE TO FEEL LIKE YOU'VE GOT A HANDLE ON THE PLACE.' IT IS THIS MIX WHICH MAKES AMSTERDAM A PLEASURE, BOTH TO VISIT
AND AS A HOME. IT IS A REAL COSMOPOLITAN CAPITAL WITH AN ENORMOUS NUMBER OF ATTRACTIONS. IT IS ALSO RELATIVELY

SMALL, PEACEFUL, WELL ORDERED AND AN EASY PLACE TO FIND YOUR WAY AROUND.

THE HISTORIC CITY CENTRE IS FAMOUS FOR ITS MONUMENTS AND CANALS. AMSTERDAM ALSO HAS AN OUTSTANDING, AND WELL-
DESERVED, REPUTATION FOR THE VARIETY OF ENTERTAINMENT IT PROVIDES. AMSTERDAM HAS ALWAYS BEEN KNOWN FOR ITS FREE
INTELLECTUAL ENVIRONMENT, WHICH HAS HAD A VERY STIMULATING EFFECT ON THE INTERNATIONAL EXCHANGE OF IDEAS AND

RESEARCH. AMSTERDAM HAS CONTINUOUSLY PROVEN ITSELF TO BE AN IMPORTANT CENTRE FOR CULTURAL, SOCIAL AND FINANCIAL
DEVELOPMENTS. PERHAPS MORE IMPORTANT FOR THE VISITOR IS ITS LIBERAL APPROACH TO SOCIAL ISSUES. THE CITY HAS A MIX OF
CULTURES AND ETHNIC GROUPS THAT ARE MADE WELCOME HERE IN A MANNER THAT IS PROBABLY UNMATCHED WITHIN EUROPE.

AMSTERDAM HAS A LOT TO OFFER CULTURALLY. TO GET AN IDEA OF WHAT IS OFFERED BY THE AMSTERDAM THEATRES, PLEASE TAKE
A LOOK AT:

WITH ITS PROXIMITY TO THE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT, SCHIPHOL, ABOUT HALF AN HOUR FROM THE UNIVERSITY, THERE IS EASY
ACCESS TO ALL PARTS OF THE WORLD. A FEW HOURS' JOURNEY WILL TAKE YOU TO MOST OTHER EUROPEAN CITIES. CITIES SUCH AS
BARCELONA, BERLIN, EDINBURGH, PARIS, LONDON, AND ROME ARE IN EASY REACH FOR A LONG WEEKEND. PUBLIC TRANSPORT
AROUND AMSTERDAM AND THE NETHERLANDS IS EXCELLENT AND THIS IS A GREAT HELP FOR DAY-TO-DAY LIVING AND FOR VISITING
OTHER PLACES IN THE NETHERLANDS.

A STUDY OF THE QUALITY OF LIFE IN 215 MAJOR CITIES WORLD-WIDE RANKED AMSTERDAM 12TH OUT OF 215 (WILLIAM M. MERCER,

LONDON, 2001) AND TIME OUT HAS CALLED AMSTERDAM 'IN A NUTSHELL, ONE OF THE MOST CONSISTENTLY SURPRISING, THRILLING,

INTRIGUING, (AND) COMPELLING CITIES ON EARTH.' WILLIAM MERCER'S HAVE ALSO EVALUATED AMSTERDAM AS ONE OF THE

CHEAPEST CAPITAL CITIES IN EUROPE - ONLY LISBON OFFERED A LOWER COST OF LIVING.

CHALLENGE OF A COMPREHENSIVE ACADEMIC CURRICULUM AND AMSTERDAM’S EXCITING URBAN ENVIRONMENT.

THE UVA OFFERS UNDERGRADUATE AND GRADUATE DEGREE PROGRAMMES IN OVER SIXTY DISCIPLINES. OVER EIGHTY DEGREE
PROGRAMMES – MOST OF THEM AT GRADUATE LEVEL – ARE FULLY OFFERED IN ENGLISH. AS A STUDENT, YOU PICK WHATEVER SUITS
YOUR TALENTS, INTERESTS AND AMBITIONS, IF NECESSARY COUNSELLED BY THE UVA ADVISORS.

IN THE FIELD OF ACADEMIC RESEARCH, THE UVA HAS A REPUTATION TO UPHOLD. THE LECTURERS INCORPORATE TODAY’S RESEARCH
RESULTS INTO TOMORROW’S LECTURES. SINCE THE UVA IS IN CONTACT WITH UNIVERSITIES ALL ACROSS THE GLOBE, VIRTUALLY
EVERY ONE OF ITS STUDENTS CAN DO PART OF THE CURRICULUM ABROAD OR MEET STUDENTS FROM ALL OVER THE WORLD IN THEIR

AMSTERDAM CLASSROOM.
THE UVA IS A LARGE UNIVERSITY, BUT A SMALL SCALE HAS BEEN PRESERVED IN HOW IT IS ORGANISED. MANY OF THE STUDY
PROGRAMMES HAVE THEIR OWN BUILDINGS IN THE CITY OF AMSTERDAM. THE CITY ITSELF IS A POPULAR CULTURAL AND MEDIA
CENTRE AND AN INTERNATIONAL JUNCTION OF COMMERCIAL FIRMS. SO IT IS A VERY ATTRACTIVE SPOT WITH A VIEW TO A FUTURE
CAREER.

IN SHORT, A HUGE RANGE OF COURSES, A TOP GRADE ACADEMIC EDUCATION, INSPIRING SURROUNDINGS AND PERSONAL GUIDANCE.

THIS IS WHAT THE UNIVERSITEIT VAN AMSTERDAM HAS TO OFFER. WHAT IT ASKS IN RETURN IS THAT ITS STUDENTS MAKE AN ACTIVE

EFFORT TO LEARN AS MUCH AS THEY CAN. THIS COMBINATION ENABLES STUDENTS AT THE UNIVERSITEIT VAN AMSTERDAM TO

DEVELOP PERSONALLY AND INTELLECTUALLY ALIKE.

AMSTERDAM DOES NOT HAVE A CAMPUS. THEREFORE, IN ORDER TO CATER FOR ITS INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS THE UNIVERSITY HAS
SIGNED AN AGREEMENT WITH SEVERAL HOUSING CO-OPERATIONS.

THE RENT OF THE ROOMS VARIES ACCORDING TO TYPE, SIZE AND LOCATION.

SHARED ROOMS WITH SHARED FACILITIES. A SHARED ROOM MEANS YOU SHARE A SINGLE ROOM WITH ANOTHER STUDENT; THESE
