ST. PAUL, Minn.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--Securian Financial Group, Inc., appears on

highest rank ever – second.
The Minneapolis Star Tribune’s 2011 list of “Top Workplaces in Minnesota” ranks Securian fifth in the large
Both publications use employee surveys to select and rank employers. While COMPUTERWORLD considers
additional data, the Star Tribune relies exclusively on employee surveys.
“We know that top job applicants look at employers’ commitment to community, the environment, and work-life
balance. We also know we are in constant competition to retain our best people,” said Robert Senkler, chairman
and CEO. “In 2010, 47 percent of our new hires were referred by existing employees and our turnover rate was
only four percent. That tells us a community-oriented corporate culture that provides meaningful work and ample
opportunities for advancement attracts and retains good people.”
Both publications rank employers on a variety of criteria. Other Securian rankings on COMPUTERWORLD’S list
l Percentage of female IT managers – Fifth, with 51%
l Lowest IT turnover rate – 4%, putting Securian in the top 25
l Percentage of female IT employees – 38%, top 25
“Many of our IT associates are math and computer science majors hired right out of college. From their first days at
Securian, they know how much we value the role they play in helping us meet our obligations,” said Jean Delaney
Nelson, senior vice president and chief information officer. “Our commitment to our people creates an environment
where employees feel good about the work they do and the company they work for.”
While Securian is known for its high employee retention rate, it received its highest ratings in the Minneapolis Star
Tribune’s survey from its newest employees. Those with six to 12 months at Securian gave the company the top
ranking among large employers with their positive responses to this statement: “Senior managers understand what is
really happening at Securian Financial Group.” They also responded favorably as a group to the statement, “Securian
Financial Group operates by strong values and ethics,” earning the company a number three ranking for that topic.
