SYDNEY TRAFFIC COMMITTEE 17 JUNE 2009
ITEM 30. TRAFFIC TREATMENTS – PROPOSED CONSULATION ON
POSSIBLE ONE-WAY TRAFFIC FLOW - WAINE STREET SURRY
HILLS
FILE NO: D/2007/1556
RECOMMENDATION
It is recommended that the Committee agree to advertise under Section 116 the possible
conversion of Waine Street between Riley and Pelican Street, Surry Hills, from existing
two-way traffic to one-way westbound traffic movement.
DECISION
BACKGROUND
An application has been received by a developer to convert the existing two-way traffic
movement of Waine Street between Riley and Pelican Streets to a one-way, westbound
traffic movement as part of a development consent condition.
COMMENTS
Condition 50 of development consent D/2007/1556 requests the developer of 200-218
Goulburn Street, the adjacent site, to provide a continuous 1m wide footway widening
along the entire southern side of Waine Street between Riley Street and Pelican Street,
Surry Hills which requires the conversion of Waine Street to “One Way” traffic flow.
The widening of the footway will reduce the carriageway to 5.2m which is insufficient for
two-way traffic flow and therefore Waine Street would need to be made one-way to
comply with the development consent conditions for this development. This proposed
one-way treatment will provide a circulating flow for traffic as Goulburn Street is one-way
eastbound.
Residents have already written to the City and to the Lord Mayor requesting this change
to traffic flow in Waine Street as they believe the carriageway width of Waine Street is
already too narrow for two-way traffic flow in the street.
