Spelling Quiz Competition Last night nine of our year 5 & 6 children represented Silverstream School at the annual Spelling Quiz competition held at Tahuna Intermediate and in teams of three had a variety of tasks to complete over two hours. The children representing us were Quinn Hawthorne, Matthew Wilmshurst, Brianna Thomson, Nash Doel-Crane, Riley Sneddon, Arianna Thijssen, Rose Finnie, Scott Christie and Ben Telfer-Hynes. It was a pleasure to be able to take such a great group of children, as they were wonderful ambassadors for our school. All the teams did exceptional well scoring 92, 87 and 85 out of 100. The winning school scored 96 so we were very, very close. Thank you to all the parents who supported our teams throughout the event. Linda Wallis and Angela Hawthorne Senior Syndicate Report Stars on Stage The seniors have been very busy throughout the term rehearsing for our Stars on Stage performance to be held on Monday night at the Regent Theatre. We have been very fortunate that we have had the wonderful vision and direction of Mrs Rout who has inspired the children to produce fantastic efforts. A reminder that the children will need to be at school, in the school hall, by 5pm where they will be fed, watered, clothed, and inspired before heading off to town on the buses. We will be back in the hall by about 9:30pm (where they must be picked up by an adult who will need to come into the hall.) Wide Horizons The senior syndicate children are continuing to enjoy the reward of the Wide Horizons’ experience! This round of expeditions includes a trip to the Macraes goldmine which ties in with our inquiry into early Otago. Unfortunately Room 12 had their trip postponed yesterday due to bad weather conditions but this will be rescheduled at a later date. Duathlon The children have been put into teams ready for the Taieri School Sports Association Duathlon on Wednesday July 1. The postponement date is Friday July 3. The children will need to make their own way to Memorial Park by 8:50am, ready for a 9 o’clock start. The bikers will be given a date the week before to bring their bike and helmet to school so that it can be safety checked. Once Stars on Stage is finished, our focus is going to move to Hangi preparations for July 2, which we have been working towards all term. We look forward to meeting with you and discussing your child’s goals and progress at the school interviews next week. The Senior Syndicate Team. Netball Representatives Congratulations to Tayla Mikaere and Arianna Thijssen who made the Taieri Representative Year 6/B netball team. Well done girls. Cardrona Ski Trips We have booked two weekend trips to Cardrona for interested families. Trip 1 - 15/16 August, Trip 2 – 12/13 September. We need a minimum of 15 skiers per day to allow us to access the heavily discounted school rates. Families are responsible for making their own transport and accommodation requirements. If you are interested in attending, either or both trips, please collect a more detailed notice from the school office. Middle Syndicate “Olden Days” Day On Tuesday 30th June, the Middle Syndicate will be having an “Olden Days Day” to celebrate the end of this term’s inquiry. We are asking the children to dress up in a costume from a decade over the past 100 years. We encourage you to be creative and to use bits and pieces that you have around the house, rather than going out to buy or hire a costume. More information about the day’s programme will be in our newsletter report next week. Swine Flu (N1H1) With term holidays approaching and a number of families planning to travel, both overseas and around NZ, the school is aware of the threat posed by the swine flu epidemic, particularly the risk posed by travellers returning as potential carriers. At this stage, the Ministry of Health’s advice is that if staff and students are well and symptom free after returning from an affected area overseas they can return to school and do not need to remain at home for any period after arriving back in the country, or back to the home town/city. However, this may change in the coming weeks and families need to plan for this possibility. The risk is that if an infected student returns to school and is in contact with other students and staff for even a day, the whole School could be closed for a week. The school board asks you to carefully monitor your family’s health as you return from overseas, or your trip within New Zealand, and if there are even the slightest flu symptoms, do not send your son or daughter back to school until you have first telephoned to check with your doctor, or alternatively check through the MOH Health line 0800 611 116.
