TIF Funded Affordable Housing Development in Humboldt Park
                     Wins Third National Award
Rosa Parks Apartments an example of the type of affordable housing development that would
benefit from the passage of the Sweet Home Chicago ordinance before City Council on Wednesday

Chicago, IL – In an event that serves to both celebrate the receipt of a prestigious development
award and highlight the positive community impact of TIF funded affordable housing
developments in Chicago, Bickerdike Redevelopment Corporation will join elected officials,
community leaders and numerous residents for a press conference at the Rosa Park
Apartments in the 27th Ward on Monday, February 7th.

Located in the Humboldt Park community, Rosa Parks Apartments consists of 94 affordable
rental homes in eight buildings featuring environmentally friendly and energy-efficient
components such as solar panels, geothermal heating and cooling systems, a vegetated roof
and a variety of other green and sustainable elements.

The Rosa Parks Apartments have garnered numerous local and national awards for its positive
impact on the surrounding community and visionary green and sustainable features. Awarding
entities include Enterprise Community Partners, the Novogradac Community Development
Foundation, the Illinois Housing Development Authority, the Precast/Prestressed Concrete
Institute, the Chicago Association of Realtors, Chicago Architect Magazine and the Design,
Develop and Construct Magazine.

This award-winning development was only made possible through the significant use of Tax
Increment Finance (TIF) funding and the strong support of Alderman Walter Burnett. The City of
Chicago’s TIF program was designed with the goal of redeveloping blighted communities. True
to this objective, Bickerdike constructed the development on blighted lots, empty for over 20
years. The Rosa Parks Apartments have increased the safety and appearance of the
surrounding neighborhood, restoring the integrity of the urban landscape and repairing the
fabric of the community.

The Rosa Parks Apartments are just one example of the type of affordable housing
development that would benefit from the passage of the Sweet Home Chicago Ordinance up for
a vote at City Council this Wednesday. Over 80 community organizations from across Chicago
and tens of thousands of Chicago residents support this ordinance, which would set-aside 20%
of annual TIF fund to be used for the development of affordable housing including new
construction developments like Rosa Parks Apartments and the rehab of multi-unit buildings
and foreclosed homes.
