INT. CRUISE SHIP. STAIRWELL AND CORRIDORS - NIGHT

Out of focus. Dizzy. The world seems to be tilting more
than it actually is. We're looking at a very long corridor
from the P.O.V. of a beautiful YOUNG WOMAN, mid twenties.

She looks back, drunken, dizzy, fighting for her life. No
one in sight. But if she knows one thing, she knows
something is definitely wrong.

THEN WE SEE HIM.

Not the face. Just the dress pants. And the shoes.
Pointed. In her direction.

She breathes hard, trying to regain her focus, her
consciousness. She tries to utter a word, a sound, but
all she can come up with is a very faint whisper.

                           YOUNG WOMAN
           Help.

She turns a corner, a labyrinth of steerage hallways. The
world-is-a-turning. Wake up, for Christ's sake.

She reaches a stairwell, climbs. Another whisper.

                       YOUNG WOMAN (CONT'D)
           Somebody help.

She climbs into the

EXT. CRUISE SHIP. UPPER DECK. CONTINUOUS

She finds herself at the deserted upper deck of a enormous
cruise ship, sailing away into darkness, a slight hint of
first morning light in the distant horizon. No land in
sight.

She tries to run. Slips and falls. Gets up again. Reality
is heightened. This can only be a bad dream that has got
to end. She grabs on to the railing, lifts herself up.

HE IS RIGHT THERE.

She tries to attack him. Defend herself. He grabs both
her forearms. She struggles for dear life.

                           YOUNG WOMAN
           No. Please. Help.

He tries to strangle her, she defends herself, slaps him.
He punches her back. Pushes her against the railing hard.

It takes a second for us to realize that she is not there
anymore. Just a pair of dark pointed shoes, staring at
the void of a dark ocean.

EXT. DESERTED BEACH. CATALINA ISLAND - DAY

An OLDER COUPLE, way past their prime, and at present way
beyond their call of duty, have decided to relive their
youthful adventures, climbing rocks to reach this beautiful
deserted beach in Santa Catalina Island, California.

Let us call them JOHN and MARTHA TUCHINSKY, gay and jovial
in every aspect, except for their bodies, who could not
keep up with their spirits.

Martha has the leg up as she climbs down first and starts
making her way toward the beach. John gets grumpy, cursing
his frail legs as she moves on.

We follow the old grand dame as she comes upon a sight
that stops her in her tracks:

The body of a woman, washed ashore, still in her silk dress
and jewelry, young enough to be her granddaughter.

                           MARTHA
             Oh, John...

Filled with compassion and curiosity, she slowly reaches
for the young woman.

She leans closer. A mix of curiosity and fear. Slowly
extends her hand to touch her beautiful face, when

She opens one eye!!! Holy fuck. She is still breathing.

Martha screams.

                                                     FADE OUT.

EXT. HELIPAD. CATALINA ISLAND - DAY

A turbine powered HELICOPTER lands on the helipad of
Catalina Island, spewing forth its occupants: PATRICK JANE,
agent LISBON and agent CHO.

They move away from the rotor wash and are met by the AVALON
SHERIFF and the WATCH COMMANDER. Lisbon does the honors.

                         LISBON
Hi. I'm agent Lisbon, this is
agent Cho and Patrick Jane, our
             consultant.

The Sheriff is eager to shake his hand.

Yes, Mr. Jane, we heard a lot about
             you.

Lisbon trades a look with Cho, a bit jealous as they are
subtly downgraded in status.

                         AVALON SHERIFF (CONT'D)
                 (back to business)
             The victim was Patricia Tucker-
Smith, some kind of heiress, a
             high-society type, she was only
             twenty-five. We're conducting an
             investigation into the hotels and
             rental properties she might have
stayed at and local watering holes.

                         LISBON
             We appreciate that. Could you
take us to the place where she was
             found?

                         AVALON SHERIFF
             This way, please.

EXT. DESERTED BEACH. CATALINA ISLAND - DAY

Jane, Cho and Lisbon climb down rocks with certain
difficulty to reach the sand on the deserted beach.

The Avalon Sheriff sides with Janes as they walk towards
the general area of the beach where she was found. The
Watch Commander distributes PHOTOS of the girl to Cho and
Lisbon.

                         AVALON SHERIFF
                 (confidentially)
Say, Jane, is it true that you
             can... see things?

                         JANE
We can all... see things, Sheriff.

                         AVALON SHERIFF
But you see things... before they
             happen?

                         JANE
No, sheriff. I just like to look
to where people are not paying
             attention.

                         AVALON SHERIFF
But you can talk to the dead.

                         JANE
No one talks to the dead.
                 (beat)
But they sure talk to us.

                         WATCH COMMANDER
The victim was found here by an
             elder couple strolling down the
beach. She was wearing a designer
             party dress and some jewelry.
             According to the coroner's report
she had been on the water less
than twelve hours and her lungs
were heavy with sand, which means,
she was still breathing when they
found her. She died an hour later
before we could retrieve the body.

Jane kneels down on the sand. Touches it. Scans the
horizon. A beautiful and paradisiacal sunny day on Catalina
Island. Then he sees a cruise ship, a Carnival Liner, far
away.

                         JANE
I think you may have to call off
             your investigation, Sheriff. This
girl was not on the island.
                 (beat)
She swam here. She swam to her
             death.

INT. UPSCALE HOUSE. PACIFIC PALISADES - DAY

UNIFORM COPS keep a perimeter around the property of the
Tucker-Smith family where a horde of REPORTERS and NEWS
VANS crowd the entrance to the house.

THE CBI VAN pulls over across the street. JANE, CHO and
LISBON step out, surprised by the media circus outside the
house.

                         JANE
             Through the front door.

A LOS ANGELES DISTRICT ATTORNEY steps to a makeshift podium
and happily addresses the hungry crowd of reporters.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
I want to thank you all for coming.
But we have no information at this
point except that we are pretty
             sure that Patricia Tucker-Smith
was murdered and we're hot on the
trail of who did this. And we're
             pretty confident we're going to
             track down this individual and
bring him to justice within the
             next thirty-six hours.

Jane turns to Lisbon.

                         JANE
             Is this around election time
already? And they call me the
             psychic.

Lisbon shrugs bemused, looks to Cho.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
So, if you could please, leave the
family alone, we would be better
able to do our job. We'll keep
             you all posted on recent
             developments. Thank you very much.

Lisbon pushes her way through the crowd. Jane and Cho
follow.

                         LISBON
             Excuse me, CBI, coming through.

They finally reach the UNIFORMED OFFICER at the front gate,
who stops them, just as the D.A. gets back from his
publicity stunt. Lisbon flashes her credentials.

                         LISBON (CONT'D)
We're with the CBI. This is agent
             Cho and Patrick Jane.

He lets them through. The D.A. catches up to them as they
walk the front lawn, followed closely by an AIDE.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
             So, CBI, we certainly appreciate
your help, but we've just about

INT. HOUSE. LIVING ROOM. PACIFIC PALISADES - DAY

Mr. RANDOLPH TUCKER-SMITH VALENS, a rather flamboyant good-
humored character, mid 60s, paces the living room floor,
smoking his pipe, surrounded by books on criminology,
forensics, and anatomy of the human body.

A DETECTIVE from the D.A.'s office hangs by his side.

                         RANDOLPH
You see, my dear, all we need, is
the precise amount of GHB that was
found on her body and we are going
             to solve that case.

Lisbon and Cho walk in the room and find the scene rather
curious. Jane looks around, taking in the room in that
casual way of his, always listening.

                         CHO

He turns.

is Patricia's mother and a younger sister, JENNIFER.

             Did you notice anything unusual
             about her?

                         RANDOLPH
No. She seemed her normal self,
             which is quite unusual, by
             definition.

                         CHO
What do you mean by unusual?

                         RANDOLPH
             Frequent escapades, boyfriends,
             parties, drugs, arrests. We could
not keep her in the family you
see. But not even the most cynic
of her companions would call her a
bad person, she was rather a lost
soul, incapable of hurting a fly,
trying to escape from herself and
the role which life has given her.

             Oh, The Glass Menagerie.

                         JENNIFER
             My favorite play.

                         JANE
Who did you want to play?

                         JENNIFER
Laura. She reminds me of Patricia.
             They killed her, didn't they?

                         JANE
             I believe so.

                         JENNIFER
I knew it. She would not have the
             guts to commit suicide.

                          JANE
             Why so?

all. She would've found a way to
             botch it.

She grabs a couple of newspapers from her nightstand.

                         JENNIFER (CONT'D)
Why do they keep publishing these
lies about us? They say we're
related to the Mafia, even name
some people I have never heard of
             as close friends.

                         JANE
They just want to sell a story.
             You need a good lawyer.

                          JENNIFER
A lawyer? Ha. We can't afford
             one.

Her CELL PHONE starts RINGING. She ignores it. Jan glances
at it. He is actually memorizing the number.

                         JANE
             May I?

                         JENNIFER
Never mind. It is probably some
             agency or production company. I
never worked. Now that my sister
has died, they keep calling every
day, wanting me to come in for an
             audition, reality shows too, how
             ironic is that?

                         JANE
             I understand.

                         JENNIFER
The money wouldn't hurt either at
             this point.

With that, her mother, AMANDA TUCKER-SMITH, a classy woman,
a faded belle from a traditional family, mid 50s, walks in
and stands by the doorframe, hiding her grief with a high
sense of propriety.

Jennifer stares at her. Jane follows her eyes, who lands
on Amanda.

                         JANE
Hello. You must be Mrs. Tucker-
Smith. I am Patrick Jane. Very
             sorry for your loss.

She attempts a smile, but doesn't quite get there. Jane
notices a certain spoken tension between Amanda and her
daughter.

                         AMANDA
How nice of you to come. Would
you accept some cookies and tea?

                         JANE
             Yes, that would be lovely.

                         JENNIFER
Patricia has died, mom. Are you
happy now!? Why do you have to
keep wanting to feed people!? Why
everything has to be such a lie!?

Amanda replies in a controlled rage, threatening.

                         AMANDA
Don't you ever talk this way to
your mother! I loved Patricia. I
             loved her.

She almost breaks down in tears. Jane steps in and grabs
her.

                         JANE
             It's alright. Mrs. Smith, why
don't I help you with the tea?

Amanda is almost sobbing as he leads her away.

INT. KITCHEN. SMITH'S RESIDENCE - DAY

Jane makes the tea. Amanda watches from the counter, still
very distraught.

                         AMANDA
             We're not a perfect family. I
just did the best I could.
Everything I did was for those
girls, so they could have a decent
             and honest life.

Jane brings her the tea.

                         AMANDA (CONT'D)
             I think I failed somehow. We're
             humans after all, right?

Jane grabs her hand. Holds on to her arms in a
characteristic way of his, looking straight into her eyes.

                         JANE
Anyone can fail. The question is,
are we able to forgive ourselves?
Can we start again and be free?

sheepish.

EXT. SMITH'S RESIDENCE - DAY

Jane, Cho and Lisbon walk back to the CBI VAN.

                         LISBON
You didn't hypnotize her, did you?

                           JANE

                 (as he opens the
                  door of the Van.)
Of course, you know it's illegal
             and unprofessional.

                           JANE
             Absolutely.

INT. BULLPEN. CBI HQ - DAY

The team discusses the case. VAN PELT has the laptop
opened.

                         VAN PELT
             She adopted the Tucker-Smith after
             her mother remarried seven years
ago with an inventor and professor
             Randolph Tucker.

                         RIGSBY
             An inventor whose inventions never
             worked. And guess this: nobody
knows where their money comes from,
which led to suspicions of ties
             with mobsters and shady businesses.

Jane paces the room in front of them.

                         JANE
             Interesting, because the younger
daughter just told me they were
             short on cash.

                         LISBON
So much for the heiress angle.

                         VAN PELT
And guess what? She was a real

                         VAN PELT (CONT'D)
Six years ago she spent two weeks
at a mental hospital in the Los
             Angeles area, where her conditions
were said to be 'much improved'
             after discharge. She also attempted
suicide on a trip to Europe with
her mother and younger sister three
years ago by ingesting a bottle of
sleeping pills and she had one
arrest a year ago for possession
of Ecstasy when a guest reported
creaming and threats form the room
next door at the Chateau Marmont
             and the hotel dialed 911.

                         JANE
Did it say anything about the
             condition of her arrest?

                         VAN PELT
She was found naked in bed, bruised
and with a bloodied nose, with a
man wearing only a jeans pants
             threatening her with a belt.

                         LISBON
             Can we find that man?

                          VAN PELT
He just disappeared into thin air.
             Untraceable.

                         JANE
Did you check the cruise ships,
             ferries, helicopter rides arriving
             at Catalina the previous day?

                         VAN PELT
Yes. There was a Carnival cruise
             arriving early that morning, one
hour earlier than usual, but she
was not on the passenger manifest
             list.

                         CHO
             There goes your cruise theory.

                         JANE
Is it possible that she could have
used an Alias, or even stayed on
             the ship in secret?

                         LISBON
             That would be virtually impossible.

                         JANE
             Not without inside assistance.

was a very pretty girl. Could we
             see the passenger manifest?

                         VAN PELT
They won't give it to us.

                         LISBON
They won't give it to us?

                         RIGSBY
             They carry flags of convenience.
Once inside the ship you are not
in U.S. Territory anymore and the
laws of this country do not apply.

                         LISBON
             Can we get a warrant?

                         VAN PELT
Yes, but it might take time, and
we would have to ascertain that a
             crime was committed inside the
             ship.

Jane has a brilliant idea.

                         JANE
Who wants to go on a cruise?

A momentary beat. The room suddenly lights up.

                           RIGSBY
             I'll go.

                           VAN PELT
             Me too. Count me in.

                         CHO
             I wouldn't mind.

                         LISBON
Hey, hey, let's not get ahead of
ourselves here. No one is going
on a cruise. We have no evidence
that she was on any of those ships.

The telephone RINGS. There is a beat before anyone decides
to do something about it.

                         JANE
             The evidence.

Cho stands up, so does Rigsby, Lisbon steps in front of

                          JANE
             Oh. Almost forgot.

Jane grabs a note from his pocket and hands it to Van Pelt.

A recorded female VOICE comes up the other end.

FADE IN:

EXT. FRONT LAWN. KOURIC'S RESIDENCE -- DAY

JANE and LISBON arrive at the front lawn of a sumptuous
mansion. A beautiful relief above the front doorway framed
by columns, hand-carved limestone exterior and golden
doorknobs add to the Versailles feel.

Jane looks nonchalantly impressed.

                       JANE
Do you know how many houses in the
           Los Angeles area have hand-carved
limestone? Six. I bet they were
           Imported from Portugal.

           China.

                         JANE

Lisbon picks up the phone as Jane checks at the details on
the toenails of the angelic relief.

                       LISBON
               (on phone)
Great. Just bring him back to the
station, have him relax, we will
           be there in an hour.

The door opens. A LADY MAIDSERVANT greets them.

                       MAIDSERVANT
Miss Kouric will entertain you by
           the pool.

                       JANE
           Oh, fantastic.

EXT. POOL PAVILION. KOURIC'S RESIDENCE -- DAY

Jane and Lisbon are seated across a frail-looking blonde,
SARAH KOURIC, early twenties, sporting Dolce & Gabbana
sunglasses and a scarf.

                       SARAH
I wanted her to know that whatever
she needed at this difficult time
           we were here for her.

                         SARAH
She was my best friend. We used
to spend our summers together when
we were younger. We haven't spoken
             much since the divorce.

                         JANE
I understand. How did she feel
             about the divorce?

                          SARAH
She felt guilty. She thought it
was her fault. I tried to convince
her but my father wasn't very
             cooperative.

                         JANE
What do you mean by cooperative?

                         SARAH
He didn't approve of our friendship.

A MALE VOICE suddenly is heard as Mr. FREDERICK KOURIC,
mid-60s, well-tanned, gaunt and lean, stern but affable, a
man who is used to controlling the world, approaches them
from behind.

                         FREDERICK
She was tramp, that's all. You
             read the profile. Psychoanalysts,
             suicide attempts, drugs,
             nymphomaniac. A wasted life.

                         LISBON
Yes, sir, but that does not give
the right for anyone to take her
             life.

Frederick places his hand on his daughter's shoulder.
Sarah twitches slightly when he touches her. Jane notices.

                         FREDERICK
She's not a good influence for my
children and any parent would do
the same. I feel sorry for the
Smiths, they were good friends but
I'm afraid it was most likely
suicide. I cannot but wonder why
even after her death she continues
             to haunt this family.

                         JANE
Well, Mr. Kouric, we believe that
there is more to the tramp than
             your peripheral assessment seems
to imply. I think she might be
trying to tell us a story. And
we're just trying to find out who
the person behind the 'tramp' was.

                         FREDERICK
             I admire your determination, but
I'm afraid you won't find much
             there.

                         JANE
             We usually do.

                         FREDERICK
             Well, good luck, Mr. --

                         JANE
                 (extending his hand)
             Jane. Patrick Jane.

Mr. Kouric shakes it.

                         FREDERICK
If you need anything else, let us
             know.

                         JANE
By the way, the limestones, were
             they imported from Portugal or
             China?

                         FREDERICK
             The stones were quarried in
             Portugal.

Jane offers his best winning smile to Lisbon.

                         FREDERICK (CONT'D)
But they were sent to China for
             finishing.

Lisbon returns the nod to Jane.

                         LISBON
             Thank you, sir.

EXT. CRUISE TERMINAL. PORT OF LOS ANGELES -- DAY

CHO and RIGSBY arrive at the Cruise Terminal, and find odd
the presence of a few local police cars.

As they step out of their car.

                         CHO
I guess we've got company. Did
             you bring the camera?

                         RIGSBY
             It's right here.

They look up at the shape of the huge CARNIVAL PARADISE
SHIP.
                                                        20.

INT. GANGWAY. CRUISE TERMINAL. PORT OF LOS ANGELES --
CONTINUOUS

Cho and Rigsby board the ship. As they get to the promenade
they see the CHIEF OFFICER of the ship talking to a local
SHERIFF, surrounded by an assortment of POLICE OFFICERS in
the atrium.

They walk right up to the chief officer and the sheriff.

                      CHO
          Hi. I'm agent Cho, California
          Bureau of Investigation. What
          exactly is happening around here?

                      SHERIFF
Thanks for coming, but we're just
          about done.

A couple of police officers escort a good-looking man,
about 42 years of age, apparently the CHIEF MEDICAL OFFICER,
out of the ship.

                      SHERIFF (CONT'D)
              (to the chief officer)
I guess you're all free to
          disembark, sir.

                      CHO
Excuse me, this is a crime scene,
this is a state case, we have
          jurisdiction.

                      RIGSBY
          Is that our witness?

                      SHERIFF
          We're taking him downtown, you
boys don't like it you can take it
          up with the District Attorney.

                      RIGSBY
We sure will. You cannot allow
          them to disembark.

                      CHIEF OFFICER
What do you want us to do? We
          have over two thousand passengers
waiting to go home. Do you want
to question every one of them?

                      CHO
No. We're going to need the
          passenger manifest and the security
          tapes.

The chief officer looks down, shakes his head, and looks
at Cho with a smirk.

INT. MINELLI'S OFFICE. CBI HQ. SACRAMENTO -- DAY

LISBON is furious at Minelli's office. Jane stands nearby
as MINELLI deals with it.

                         LISBON
They won't give us the security
tapes? How can they do that?
Where did they get that right?

                         MINELLI
It's not that simple. Those ships
             fly flags of convenience. Basically
             you're in Liberia, Panama, the
             Bahamas. American laws often do
not apply. We're getting a warrant,
it may take some time. I don't
             know.

                         LISBON
             What about our witness?

                         MINELLI
             I'll have him transferred here
ASAP. The D.A. made this a special
             interest case.

                         JANE
             Obviously someone is feeding off
             information to the D.A.'s office
before it gets to us. How heavy
             are they leaning on you?

                         MINELLI
             He requested this investigation to
become a task force. The FBI
             special maritime division, local
law enforcement and the CBI. His
             office will become heavily involved.

                         LISBON
It seems more likely the unilateral
             commission. They didn't even give
us access to the crime scene.

                         JANE
Forget about the crime scene. It
doesn't exist. If you wanted to
get rid of someone that was causing
you pain or trouble, what better
place than a cruise ship? You're
on foreign land, with plenty of
ocean, with lack of response time,
             no crime-scene preservation and
             insufficient evidence.

Jane grabs her file from Minelli's desk. Opens it on her
photo with her sister, smiling, just a regular teenage
girl.

                         JANE (CONT'D)
She wasn't supposed to be on that
beach. She was supposed to have
vanished. And by swimming to that
island, she created a huge problem.
The only way we're going to find
out who the killer is, is by finding
out who she was. And then we're
             going to flush him out.

INT. OBSERVATION ROOM. SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT -- DAY

CHO, RIGSBY, the county SHERIFF, and an attorney from the
D.A.'s office watch from a one-way mirror as the CHIEF
MEDICAL OFFICER sits in the interrogation after being
questioned by a LAPD detective.

                         CHO
             May we go in?

                         COUNTY SHERIFF
             He's all yours.

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM. SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT -- DAY

Cho questions the Chief Medical Officer, RONALD. Rigsby
stands a foot behind.

                         CHO
             So, what's the connection?

                         RONALD
I told you, she was a stalker.
That woman was crazy. We met about
a year ago, on a 21-day cruise to
             South America.

FLASHBACK

We see Patricia Tucker-Smith at a night club inside the
ship. It is a wild shipboard partying.

                         RONALD (CONT'D)
She kept staring at me all night
long. Then she just walks up to
             my table.

She grabs his hand, leads him away, giggling.

                         RONALD (CONT'D)
I though she was hot, very
             beautiful.

Patricia leads him through a corridor, pulls him into a
dark corner and starts kissing him.

                         CHO
Did you have sex with her?

                         RONALD
No. I mean, yes, hell, I'm going
to lose this job. It was just a
             fling, ok? Nothing serious. And
something else. She was into drugs.

                         CHO
             What kind of drugs?

                         RONALD
Ecstasy. She said it would be
good to me. She wanted to split
             one.

                         CHO
             Did you?

Ronald hesitates, brings his hand to face.

                          RONALD
Oh shit. Yes. We split half.

                         CHO
Did you get her into the ship?

                         RONALD
No. I had nothing to do with that.
We hooked up for about ten days,
             that's all. You know, it's a ship,
you meet people, it happens. The
sea can be a very lonely place.

                         CHO
             So, what happened?

                         RONALD
She started stalking me like crazy.
             Sending letters very week, trying
to board the ship whenever we were
in port. Calling in. It was a
             nightmare.

                         CHO
Are you positive it was her?

FLASHBACK

The Chief Medical Officer is at a dinner table set for
six, with his fiancée, another ship officer and his wife,
and a guest couple on the night of the crime.

                         RONALD
I was having dinner with my fiancée,
when out of nowhere, she just walks
             up to our table...

Patricia Tucker-Smith quietly walks to their table, with
sad, crazy eyes, acknowledges the group, grabs the nearest
glass of wine... and throws it in his face.

                         RONALD (CONT'D)
Throws the glass of wine on my
face and lunges for me. It took
two officers to calm her down.

She reaches for him, going for his throat in an outburst
of mad fury. The officer and another passenger grab her
arms, trying to control her deranged attack.

END FLASHBACK

                         RONALD (CONT'D)
             It was very embarrassing.

                         CHO
I can understand. One woman in
             every port, a good-looking guy
             like yourself, should hurt.

                         RONALD
It's not like that. I am not some
sort of sexual deviant. My life
has changed. I don't know what
that has to do with her death. I
am engaged now. At least I still
             think I am.

                         CHO
It does give you a perfect motive.
             She destroyed your life, stalked
             you, undermined your love life.
What did you do after that?

                         RONALD
             I went to my cabin.

                         CHO
             Was your fiancée with you?

                          RONALD
No. She wanted to be by herself.

                         CHO
So how did you do it? When did
             you throw her overboard?

                         RONALD
Listen, I am not a killer. I save
             lives. That's my job.

EXT. MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTE -- DAY

A peaceful setting, green lawns, people strolling by. If
one does not look close enough, it may be mistaken for a
country club.

INT. DOCTOR'S OFFICE. MENTAL HEALTH INSTITUTE -- DAY

Dr. MELISSA HEYES, mid-60s, director of the institute,
looks at the file on Patricia Tucker-Smith. Raises her
eyes to Jane and Lisbon, seated across from her.

                         MELISSA
Yes, Mr. Jane, drugs were essential
of her whenever she approached the
realm of sex. She had a rather
             unusual approach to the whole
             matter.

She examines the file, searching, remembering the details.

                          MELISSA (CONT'D)
She would walk the grounds with
             ankle length skirts, sometimes
would lock herself in her room for
days at a time, but one event did
             stand out...

FLASHBACK

A Nurse tears down the hall as screams are heard emanating
from the patient's ward.

                         MELISSA (CONT'D)
The first few nights she would
             wake up screaming.

The nurse enters the patient's ward, followed by two
assistants. They find Patricia Tucker-Smith in a fit of
rage, throwing one of her pillows and smashing the other
to the ground or on anyone within range.

                         MELISSA (CONT'D)
I hate him. I hate him. She would
             scream over and over again.

No. She never gave any specific
             name.

                         LISBON
             Did you question the family?

                         MELISSA
             They weren't very helpful. Whoever
that was, whether a figment of her
             imagination or some real traumatic
             experience, she carried it alone,
and kept in the darkest alcove of
             her soul.

                         JANE
             How long was she here?

                         MELISSA
Two weeks. She was released with
clonazepam. I told the family to
keep watch over the next few weeks,
an bring her back after thirty
             days for re-evaluation.

                         JANE
Which I assume they did not.

                         MELISSA
I never heard from them again.

Jane extends to shake her hand.

                         JANE
Thank you Dr. Heyes, that will be
             all.

She pauses for a brief second, a look of recognition crosses
her face.

                         MELISSA
             Have I met you somewhere?

                         JANE
             Yes.
                 (beat)
             I was a patient here.

INT. CBI HQ. SACRAMENTO -- DAY

The team is gathered at a conference table. VAN PELT has
her laptop opened in front of her.

                         CHO
The chief medical officer is out
on bail. I would definitely keep
an eye on him. He has a great
             motive.

Yes, but he didn't get her on the
             ship.

                         CHO
             You believe that?

                         JANE
Would you let a woman that has
been stalking you aboard a ship
             when traveling with your fiancée?

                         LISBON
He still could have done it, though.

                         JANE
Yes, but most likely someone knew
of this affair and was trying to
             frame him. Anyway, what's the
             connection? She was arrested a
year ago at a hotel with our mystery
man, who was not charged and
             disappears and the family denies
any knowledge of it, even refusing
             to continue her treatment.

                         CHO
Maybe they thought it was a family
             matter.

                         JANE
Maybe they thought she knew too
much. Maybe they were afraid of
             what she might say.

                         LISBON
You think the family would conspire
             to kill their own daughter?

                         JANE
She was a sore spot, but no, I
             don't think so.

                         VAN PELT
I got the name of the arresting
             officer.

Jane turns to her.

                         VAN PELT (CONT'D)
It was officer Mike Pearson of the
             LAPD.

EXT. PARKING LOT -- DAY

CHO pulls over next to a LAPD patrol car. Jane and Cho
step out and walk towards officer MIKE PEARSON, heavy-set,
leaning against his car, looking around.

             As you wish.

                         PEARSON
So, I get there at around two a.m.
I walk up to their room and I hear
the screams. I kick the door open.
The subject is wearing pants and
no shirt, holding a belt in his
hands. She is in bed, naked,
             bleeding from the eyebrow, there's
an empty bottle of vodka and they
             found ecstasy later on.

He looks around once more, fidgety, before continuing.

                         PEARSON (CONT'D)
I make the arrest, take him
             downstairs, then the strangest
thing happens... I got a call from
dispatch telling to let the subject
go. Just like that. No motive.
             Just let him go.

                         CHO
             What did you do?

                         PEARSON
I told him to make himself scarce,
if you know what I mean. And he
sure did, to this day. We haven't
             heard from him since.

                         JANE
             Could you describe him?

                         PEARSON
Sure, he looked mid 30's, fit,
this guy sure worked out, could be
             one of those Chippendale dancers.
                 (beat)
Twenty years on the force I have
never seen anything like it, just
let a subject go, no questions.

                         JANE
Could you recognize him if you saw
             him again?

                            PEARSON
             I think so.

He listens. Hangs up. Turns to Jane.

                         CHO (CONT'D)
They returned a suicide note they
found on the cabin she stayed at.
The D.A. is going to announce it.

                          JANE
             Ha. Interesting.

EXT. STEPS. DISTRICT ATTORNEY'S OFFICE -- DAY

Lots of reporters gather to hear the announcement from the
District Attorney, who is sided by members of the LAPD,
FBI Special Maritime Division and Agent LISBON.

He steps up and is met by a series of flashes and
microphones.

                          LOS ANGELES D.A.
             At approximately five-twenty a.m.
a suicide note was found at the
             cabin where Miss Tucker-Smith
             remained illegally during her short
trip. In the letter she describes
at length her intention and motives
             to commit suicide, apologizing to
her family and for the incident
that occurred with the chief medical
             doctor aboard the ship, exonerating
             him from any responsibility for
             her actions and decision that
evening. We would like to thank
some of the officers here present
             for their outstanding work, the
             Los Angeles Police Department, the
             FBI special maritime division and
             the the CBI.

                         REPORTER
             Sir, was she criminally assaulted?

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
             No, the county medical examiner's
office found no evidence of rape.
The entire suicide note will be
made public later on this evening.

A MAN watches from the crowd as the District Attorney tries
to halt the barrage of questions. He is RANDOLPH,
Patricia's stepfather, stern, not at all happy with this
outcome.

                                                    FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

INT. CBI HQ. SACRAMENTO -- DAY

Jane, Lisbon, Van Pelt, Cho and Rigsby are gathered in a
conspiratorial and hushed tone. Lisbon is slightly upset.

                       LISBON
           And why would that be?

                       JANE
           Come-on, Lisbon, you don't buy
           this, do you?

                          LISBON
           Indulge me.

                       JANE
Women are known to write extensively
           detailed suicide notes and follow
through on it. She said she was
going to have a nice meal and a
bottle of Alma Viva, the Chilean
wine, before she resorted to the
           painkillers that would end her
life, while watching the sea, which
she would most likely do from land.

Jane leaves the printout of the suicide note on the table
and grabs the coroner's report.

                        JANE (CONT'D)
And yet, the coroner report found
no last meal and no trace of wine
           in her body.

                       RIGSBY
Maybe she changed her mind. Women
are know changing their minds in a
           heartbeat.

                          VAN PELT
           Says who?

                          RIGSBY
           Well, the --

                       LISBON
-- the two experts on female
           psychology.

                       CHO
Maybe the incident with the ship's
doctor put too much stress and she
           decided to take the shortcut.

                         JANE
Not with this note. Not with GHB
in her body. Why would a woman
about to commit suicide be found
with a common date rape drug in
             her system?

                         CHO
Maybe somebody gave it to her.

                         JANE
To make it look like a sexual
predator, just in case. And then
             there's the money. Nobody found
the source of their money. Van
             Pelt, any luck?

She nods negatively.

                         VAN PELT
             They paid everything cash. Bills,
             utilities, property taxes,
             employees.

                         JANE
They were broke. I believe they
             were blackmailing somebody who got
very upset and decided to take
             revenge on their daughter. We
find the money, we'll find the
             killer.

                         CHO
And there's the real father. No
one has spoken to him yet.

                         VAN PELT
Yes, apparently he lives on a beach
house in Mexico, with no telephones,
             no internet, disconnected from the
             world.

                          JANE
Maybe we can get you two
                 (re Van Pelt and
                  Rigsby)
             On a helicopter to Mexico?

Unknown to them, MINELLI has entered the room and listens
very closely, as if to join in the conversation. Lisbon
is the first to notice.

                          LISBON
             Hey, boss.

The rest of the team react, sheepishly.

                         LISBON
No, sir. We were just looking at
             the suicide note.

                         MINELLI
I don't know if you watch the same
channels I do, but apparently this
case is closed with a final ruling
             of suicide.

                         JANE
Yes, but I don't think anybody
             would --

                         MINELLI
-- you two, in my office right
             now.

Jane stops in mid-sentence as Lisbon rolls her eyes.

INT. MINELLI'S OFFICE. CBI HQ. SACRAMENTO -- DAY

Minelli nods behind his desk. He can't believe this is
happening.

                         JANE
             Do you buy that?

                         MINELLI
No. It stinks. This is the worst
suicide case I have ever come
             across.

                         LISBON
What are we going to do about it?

                         MINELLI
This is a very sensitive time for
             the District Attorney. Election
is coming up, this is a high-profile
case, whatever you do, leave him
             at peace.

Jane smiles.

                         JANE
             At peace, he will.

                         MINELLI
             You have forty-eight hours.

                         JANE
Actually, we have less than that.
             I better get moving.

He's not going to leave the D.A.
             alone is he?

                         LISBON
Well, not in the way you think.
             Nothing to fret about.

                         MINELLI
Oh, I'm already fretting. I'm all
             fretted up.

EXT. FRONT LAWN. HOUSE -- DAY

JANE arrives at the front door of a large Tudor mansion.
He searches for the door bell. Rings. Looks around
furtively.

INT. LIVING ROOM. TUDOR MANSION -- DAY

An expansive living room. The DISTRICT ATTORNEY turns
from the painting across the room from the fireplace to
face JANE, already sipping innocuously from his tea cup.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
Yes, Mr. Jane, I heard about you
and your peculiar ways of getting
thing done. Do you think you could,
             perhaps, hypnotize me?

                         JANE
That wouldn't do any good, because
you don't know who the killer is,
you actually have no idea who the
             killer might be.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
Oh, so it was not suicide after
all. And I assume you do know who
             the supposed killer is?

                         JANE
             I don't. I have an inkling he
will walk onto the stage soon.
But I do know one thing.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
And what would that thing be?

                         JANE
That you are not a friend of the
             Tucker-Smith family, that you have
actually not heard much about their
             family before this incident.

you take personal interest in this
             case.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
Perhaps some close friend to the
             family, a former contributor,
             campaign supporter, someone who
wants to bring closure to a family
in pain. But how is that relates
             to the supposed killer?

                         JANE
             Ah-ha. Blackmail. Money
             laundering. A chain reaction.
             Somebody knows somebody, who knows
someone, who asks for a favor, so
that someone who knows too much
             would kindly disappear into the
             night.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
             I see.

                         JANE
If there is one thing I can spot
is a lie. And this is a
             smorgasboard. The family is lying,
the people we interviewed are lying,
             the ship captain's and everyone
else is lying and hiding something.
             Only one person is not.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
             And who would that be?

                         JANE
The insane one. The victim. The
truth is much easier. I'm afraid
he die is cast, and this whole
             castle will come crumbling down.

The District Attorney ponders for a second. Points Jane
to the direction of a series of portraits of his family.
All civil servants across generations.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
The world, Mr. Jane, is one big
             illusion. The difference is some
             people believe in the illusion,
while others know it is an illusion.
Very few can go past the illusion
to see the truth. The way I see
it, better a good illusion than a
             bad one.

INT. BULLPEN. CBI HQ - DAY

RIGSBY and LISBON are going through the video footage shot
by Rigsby and Cho as the passengers disembark, mainly a
jolly bunch, unaware of anything out of the ordinary.

                         LISBON
Good luck, this is going to take
             forever.

VAN PELT is across from them, doing her own laptop research.

                         VAN PELT
Listen to this. A year ago a woman
passed out on the same ship and
said was raped by a kitchen helper
             from Indonesia. Date rape drug
was found in her body. The cruise
line denied all charges and the
case was settled out of court.

They have not provided us with
             crew or passenger list.

                         VAN PELT
             Yes, it is right here.

                         RIGSBY
We can call, can't we? If he
             answers...

                         VAN PELT

                           LISBON
Great idea. Do you want to call
             the ship?

                           VAN PELT
             I got it.

CHO comes dashing into the room.

                         CHO
I found an offshore account in the
name of the family. There has
             been regular transfer activities
to their US account over the years.
But I found a deposit eight years
ago and it came from on of the
accounts of a law firm called Latham
             & Watkins.

                         LISBON
             They're huge.

                         CHO
So was the amount. Twenty million
             dollars.

                         LISBON
             Can we verify that?

                           CHO
             Yup.

                         LISBON
             Let's call them.

EXT. STREET -- DAY

JANE is parked just across the street form the Kouric
mansion. He dials. Waits.

                      JANE
          Hello, Amanda. This is Patrick
Jane from the CBI. I wonder if we
could talk, I'm just across the
          street.

A nervous teenage voice answers, Amanda Kouric.

                      AMANDA
Oh, I'm sorry, I can't talk to you
right now. Please don't call this
          number.

She hangs up.

                         JANE
          Hmm. Interesting.

A BENTLEY pulls over into the driveway just then. Jane
steps out of his car and follows on foot. His CELL rings.
It's Lisbon.

                      LISBON

to get punched. I hope he doesn't
get the nose, I'm hoping side of
the left cheek, in the middle.
          That'll be good.

                      LISBON
          Please stop whatever you're doing
and do not use the CBI name.

                      JANE

EXT. DRIVEWAY. KOURIC'S RESIDENCE -- DAY

Jane approaches just as Kouric steps out of his car.

                         JANE
             Excuse me, Mr. Kouric.

Frederick Kouric turns, absolutely surprised. The driver,

I have a quick question about
             Patricia Smith. I understand your
families used to spend some time
             together during the summer. Did
             you seduce her?

                            FREDERICK
             Say again?

                         JANE
Did you have sex with her, were
             you romantically involved?

                            FREDERICK
             You bastard.

Frederick, fuming, punches Jane in a reflex move.

                         FREDERICK (CONT'D)
Get the hell off my property!

The driver stands between them and grabs Jane by the collar.

                         JANE
                 (in pain)
             I'm okay. Don't worry.

                         FREDERICK
I'm good friends with the district
             attorney!

                           JANE
             Oh. That I know.

If he can get re-elected, maybe.

                         FREDERICK
             Get him out of here!

Jane is dragged off the property as another security guard
comes running from the main house.

INT. CBI HQ. SACRAMENTO -- DAY

JANE sits in his couch, holding ice to the left side of
his cheek. Lisbon stares at him, pissed. Cho walks up to
Lisbon.

                         CHO
Just got back with the law agency,
they deny having any knowledge of
             said deposit.

                         JANE
             Of course, shady business. Why
             don't we ask the family?

Minelli walks into the room straight to Jane - Lisbon and
Cho take a step back.

Minelli sits right besides him and smiles. Tries his best
not to look stressed. Caresses the leather couch.

                         MINELLI
             Nice couch, isn't it?

Jane shakes his head.

                         JANE
             It's alright.

                         MINELLI
I can let you have it... if you
promise to resign from this unit
             effective immediately.

                         JANE
             I got the perfect plan.

                         MINELLI
The perfect plan? You just offended
two of the most powerful men in
the state of California. On the
same day. This must be a record.
I don't think it has been done in
the history of law enforcement in
             this state.

Minelli stands up. Turns to leave.

Your best? From you, we're going

He storms out. Lisbon turns to Jane, shaking her head.

Why is the funeral so important?

                        JANE
Oh. The killer is going to be
             there.

Across the room, the PHONE RINGS. Van Pelt answers.

Jane walk up to his desk, picks up the phone.

                         JANE

EXT. TUCKER-SMITH RESIDENCE -- DAY

Jane and Lisbon arrive at the front door. They hear
SCREAMS. Lisbon goes alert, reaches for her gun. Jane
tries to assuage her fears.

                         JANE

Suddenly the front door snaps open and Anne's younger
sister, JENNIFER, storms out, tears in her eyes, past Jane
and Lisbon, barely noticing them, and continues toward the
street.

Jane pokes his head in. He sees Randolph embracing a teary-
eyed Mrs. Tucker-Smith.

Randolph sees him. He gestures for him to wait, then
whispers something and sends his wife away.

The room looks like a war room for a high-level government
agency. Notes are posted on both walls, along with photos
and pieces of evidence and research notes, coroner report's,
etc...

                         RANDOLPH
             I'm sorry about the incident
outside. It has been a difficult
             time for all of us.

                         JANE
You obviously don't seem to concur
             with the suicide theory.

                         RANDOLPH
That's exactly what it is, just a
             theory.

                         LISBON
             What is your theory then?

                         RANDOLPH
             Anyone who knows Patricia, knows
she wouldn't throw herself off a
             cruise ship like that.

                         LISBON
             She tried suicide before.

                         RANDOLPH
That was another time, her life
             was different, she was undergoing
             voluntary treatment, there were no
drugs found in her body, except
             for methadone, which was prescribed,
and GHB, which was administered by
someone who intended to have her
             killed.

                         JANE
What if I told you I could help
you find the killer within the
             next day.

Lisbon looks at Jane, don't even go there. He ignores.

                         RANDOLPH
Then we would have a deal.

                         JANE
By the way, are you aware of a
             twenty million dollars deposit to
the family account made about eight
             years ago.

                           RANDOLPH
                   (surprised)
             No.

                         JANE
Then perhaps you should ask your
wife. But first, you should make
             a call to someone.

Jane hands him a card with a number and a name written on
it. Randolph looks at the card, then back to Jane,
impressed.

             Shall we?

                           RANDOLPH
             This way.

Randolph leads Jane away to his private office, leaving
Lisbon worried.

INT. CBI HQ. SACRAMENTO -- NIGHT

VAN PELT is painstakingly going through the videos of the
passengers disembarking. The office is near empty.

Cho and Rigsby walk by, on their way out.

                           RIGSBY
             You coming?

                         VAN PELT
I'm going to stay a while.

                         CHO
             She's tenacious.

                         RIGSBY
             You have no idea.

The two of them leave. Van Pelt stares at the screen, one
passenger at a time, always pausing the video.

TIME LAPSES as Van Pelt keeps checking one passenger after
another. Families, couples, young adults, seniors, and
then HE SHOWS - a man suspect enough, beard and moustache...

He notices the camera, looks the other way. Van Pelt
rewinds. Freeze frames.

                           VAN PELT
             Eureka.

Zooms in. Enhances. Control Print. A MACHINE across the
room starts printing out the photo.

INT. CBI HQ. SACRAMENTO -- MOMENTS LATER

Van Pelt leaves a copy of the photo in Lisbon's desk.
Places another at Rigsby's and exits, turning off the
lights.

EXT. PARKING LOT. CBI HQ -- MOMENTS LATER

Van Pelt heads towards her car. POV SHOT - someone is
watching her.

She enters the car, turns it on and drives off.
                                                      45.

EXT. STREET. OUTSIDE CBI HQ -- MORNING

Van Pelt approaches the intersection to a green light.
Slows down and continues. Out of nowhere a HUMMER turns
on its light and crashes into her car! Sending it spinning
onto the opposite sidewalk. An explosion of glass and
charred metal!

The Hummer drives off in a hurry. Van Pelt sits inside
the wrecked piece of metal, stuck between the air bags,
unconscious, and bleeding.

                                               FADE OUT.

FADE IN:

INT. WAITING ROOM. HOSPITAL -- NIGHT

JANE arrives. The entire unit is already there: Rigsby,
Cho and Lisbon. He feels sad and terribly guilty. Lisbon
turns to him in a sotto voce.

                       LISBON
She came up with a suspect. They
found a photo at my desk. We're
           trying to match the database.

                       JANE
           How is she doing?

A middle-aged DOCTOR steps into the waiting room, wearing
a surgical mask and a blank poker face.

                       DOCTOR
She'll be okay. Minor cuts and
           abrasions and a cervical herniated
disc between the fifth and sixth
           vertebrae, minor or absent nerve
           root compression. Nothing that
           will require surgical intervention,
but I do recommend a good
           chiropractor for the next twelve
           weeks.

The team is relieved.

                       LISBON
Will she be able to get back to
           her activities?

                       DOCTOR
Within a week, nothing that requires
heavy lifting. As a common side
effect she will be a little more
           irritable than usual.

                       RIGSBY
Uh, is there any way to fix...
           that?

                       DOCTOR
Time. It could be a few weeks, a
few months, some will carry it for
           the rest of heir lives.

                        RIGSBY
           Great.

             know.

He walks out. Jane confesses.

                          JANE
This was no accident. Someone is
targeting this unit. I got a
             threatening phone call just before
             it happened.

                         LISBON
             And you didn't tell us?

                         JANE
             I'm terribly sorry.

EXT. CATALINA ISLAND / CRUISE SHIP -- DAY

Establish. A cruise ship arrives at port.

INT. CRUISE SHIP -- DAY

CHO, the AVALON SHERIFF and the WATCH COMMANDER, along
with two OFFICERS walk right up to the STAFF CAPTAIN.

                         CHO
Sir, we are here to interview a
             Guntur Setiawan, native from
Indonesia, as we understand, he is
still working on this ship. He is
a suspect in a murder case. We do
have a warrant to search his cabin.

He hands it to the staff captain.

                         STAFF CAPTAIN
No need to raise an alarm, I'll
             page him for you.

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM. CRUISE SHIP -- DAY

GUNTUR, a tall, somewhat attractive Indonesian male, is
seated at a table across from the Watch Commander, while
CHO speaks to the AVALON SHERIFF in the foreground.

                         AVALON SHERIFF
They just found GHB in his cabin.
             About 200 grams.

CHO nods and walks up to the desk. Speaks directly to
Guntur.

                         CHO
We just found 200 grams of GHB, a
common date rape drug in your cabin,

found in the body of Susana Burns
             and the victim Patricia Tucker-
             Smith.

                         GUNTUR
Listen, I may have made some
mistakes, but I'm not a killer.

                         CHO
We can indict you for murder right
now. So, what's it going to be?

                         GUNTUR
I was at the night club that night.

FLASHBACK

Guntur walks towards Patricia in the middle of the dance
floor, dancing, wild, ad stops, and stops as another burly
man, bearded and moustached, approaches her with a drink
in hand. The same man Van Pelt singled out from the crowd.

                         GUNTUR (CONT'D)
Saw this guy, chasing her, I let
go, I thought it was a boyfriend
             or something.

We pan down to his shoes. Dark pointed shoes. The shoes
of a killer.

END FLASHBACK

                         CHO
I'm going to show you five pictures,
do you think you can point him out
             to me?

                         GUNTUR
             Sure.

Cho displays five photographs, one of which is the man Van
Pelt had identified.

INT. FUNERAL HOME -- DAY

A funeral service is being held for PATRICIA TUCKER-SMITH
before cremation. From a corner of the room JANE surveys
the room, alongside LISBON. Everyone who is anyone is
present...

AMANDA weeps alongside the casket with RANDOLPH, stoic by
nature, standing alongside her; her sister LIZ is comforted
by some friends her age in a chair; we also see her
childhood friend AMANDA, alongside her mother and father,
FREDERICK, the industrialist and a collection of a who's
who in society.

When a strange man, fish-out-of-the-water, walks in, slacks,
sunburned, aged beyond his years, startling all present,
and walks towards the casket.

His name is GEORGE SMITH, Patricia's real father.

                         GEORGE
             Sorry for barging in unannounced,
but she is my daughter, after all.

Amanda notices and immediately directs her rage against
him.

                         AMANDA
             What are you doing here?

                         RANDOLPH
             How dare you.

Amanda stands up, walks towards him, pointing, ready to
tear him apart. Lisbon looks to Jane - what to do? - Jane
gestures for her to wait.

                         AMANDA
Get out of here! You killed her!
You are a murderer!! Get out!!!

She reaches for his throat with such fury that three or
four men have to hold her back, with tears in her eyes.

George points back, furious.

                         GEORGE
Are you so sure? Why don't you
take one good look at your damn
             self! You miserable greedy little
thing. You're the one who did
this! You wanted the money! I
loved my daughter from the moment
             I saw her.

                          AMANDA
             Get out!!!

Liz steps in between her parents, in tears. When we hear
an overpowering VOICE as the DISTRICT ATTORNEY tears into
the room with two assistants in two.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
             Stop the funeral!

Everyone turns to the District Attorney.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A. (CONT'D)
New evidence has come in! We need
             to perform another autopsy! I
know who the killer is and we'll
have him within the next 24 hours!

There is a general hush in the room as he produces the

INT. LISBON'S OFFICE. CBI HQ. SACRAMENTO -- DAY

LISBON gets off the phone. JANE is waiting by the
doorframe.

                         LISBON
NCIC says we got a match. The man
on the ship is a former convict
             felon, kidnapper. We're going to
             get an arrest warrant.

                         JANE
Oh. Great. I thought the District
             Attorney had the killer.

                         LISBON
Jane, no one is listening to the
             District Attorney anymore.

Jane raises his hand.

                         JANE
             I am.

Lisbon shakes her had in utter disbelief.

                         LISBON
             I said no surprises.

                         JANE
Oh, you're in for a big one.

EXT. STREET. BAD NEIGHBORHOOD -- NIGHT

LISBON is parked outside a run down apartment complex in a
poor neighborhood in town. JANE looks up at the corner
building.

                         JANE
The killer is going to walk through
             that apartment very soon.

                         LISBON
             And you know that how?

                         JANE
             Because the District Attorney told
             him to.

                         LISBON
The D.A. told the killer to come
             here?

                         JANE
             Yes, in a way.
                                                       51.

INT. APARTMENT. BAD NEIGHBORHOOD -- MOMENTS LATER

The apartment is empty, devoid of furniture. It is eerily
quiet. Except for the footsteps.

EXT. STAIRWELL AND CORRIDORS -- CONTINUOUS

We see the dark leather boots landing on the floor of the
apartment. Then the GUN, shinning in the light shaft that
pours through the corridor window from the streets.

The footsteps continue up to the entrance to the apartment.
It checks the door. A gloved leather hand reaches for it
and opens.

INT. APARTMENT. BAD NEIGHBORHOOD -- CONTINUOUS

The person enters the dark, empty apartment, the only light
comes from the street outside. He tries searching for the
light switch, when suddenly and before he an reach it...

ALL LIGHTS GO ON.

And we're staring at MR. FREDERICK KOURIC, with an overall
coat and a GLOCK 9mm with a silencer in his hand.

LISBON steps out of the shadows with her gun drawn. JANE
stands right beside her.

Mr. Kouric, utterly confused, improvises.

                      FREDERICK
What on earth is going on?

                      LISBON
          Sir, drop the gun.

He does not respond.

                      FREDERICK
What are you doing here? I came
          here to catch the killer.

                      JANE
You came here to erase evidence.

                      FREDERICK
I'm a friend of the family.

                      JANE
I'm sure you have better things to
do with your time, than to wander
          around bad neighborhoods in the
          middle of the night.

He starts haphazardly waving his gun.

                      LISBON
          Sir, drop your weapon, now.

             to, you little shit?

                         JANE
I don't know if you meant me, but
if you did, I would say a pedophile
             and a pale murderer.

                         FREDERICK
I'm friends with the Governor of
             the State, the District Attorney
and the President of this country.
By tomorrow you're going to be
             apologizing for this little stunt,
and your careers are going to be
             over.

He puts the gun back in his pocket as if to leave, ignoring
them.

                         LISBON
             Sir, stop right there.

                         FREDERICK
What are you going to do, shoot
             me?

                           VOICE
             No, I will.

The DISTRICT ATTORNEY steps from the other side of the
apartment. He nods to Jane, who nods back 'I told you
so.'

                         FREDERICK
             What is this?

                         LISBON
             Sir, we're placing under arrest
for the murder of Patricia Tucker-
             Smith.

                         FREDERICK
I want to see my lawyer.

INT. BULLPEN. CBI HQ - DAY

GEORGE SMITH, Patricia's real father; RANDOLPH TUCKER and
AMANDA, Patricia's mother, sit across the desk from LISBON
and JANE, standing.

                         JANE
Eight years ago, you were paid
twenty million dollars to sign a
             formal release exonerating an
             unnamed individual of all
             liabilities and damages done to
                         (MORE)

                                           (CONTINUED)
                                                            53.

                         JANE (CONT'D)
             your daughter, Patricia, after she
told you of affair she was having
with an older man, who had seduced
her when she was only fourteen
during one of your family summer
             trips.

He looks straight at the mother.

                         JANE (CONT'D)
She was seventeen by then. She
had spent two days at a hotel in
             Los Angeles with this individual
when she finally decided to tell
             you. That individual was your
             family's friend. Mr. Frederick
             Kouric.

                          AMANDA
             No. That's not correct.

                         GEORGE
Yes. No more lies, Amanda. That's
             exactly what happened. That
             sonofabitch seduced our daughter
and decided to settle out of court.

Randolph is absolutely surprised.

                         AMANDA
                 (shaky)
It all went into her treatment.

                         JANE
Well, some of it. Your house,
             your lifestyle, the cars, your
beach house, her sister's education --

                          AMANDA
                 (crying)
             -- she doesn't know.

                         JANE
             Yes, she does. Everything was
             paid by your daughter Patricia
             Tucker-Smith. She paid so you
could live the way you wanted.

                         GEORGE
It was the worst mistake we ever
made, and I don't want any of it.
             It destroyed our marriage, our
             family and everything we hoped
for. We could not look at each
             other anymore without feeling a
horrible sense of shame and guilt.

Jane turns to Randolph.

                                              (CONTINUED)
                                                         54.

CONTINUED:

                         JANE
And you sir, didn't know much.
And though I believe you may have
feelings for Amanda, you were just
happy to go along for the ride, as
             long as someone was bankrolling
             your inventions.
                 (to Amanda)
But there was a problem, wasn't
             there?

INT. INTERROGATION ROOM. CBI HQ -- DAY

CHO sits across the desk from a silent and defiant Frederick
Kouric.

                         CHO
The money was running out, so they
kept asking for more. So you hired
this man to get rid of the problem.

Cho places the photo of the suspect on the desk.

                         CHO (CONT'D)
And that was not the first time
you hired someone to get rid of
the problem. Five years ago, she
would not stop calling you, she
             would not forget.

FLASHBACK

Chateau Marmont. Hotel Room. A strong man lays Patricia
on the bed. She is teasing, but he comes on strong, tries
to kiss her, takes her clothes off, she resists.

                         CHO (CONT'D)
So you had someone seduce her and
take her to the Chateau Marmont,
for a different kind of experience.

He takes his belt off, slaps her.

END FLASHBACK

                         CHO (CONT'D)
But she would not take it, because
             she was loyal, to you.

                         FREDERICK
             Besides entrapment, which is what
you did, is that all you got?
             Story weaving?

                         CHO
We got the man you hired, and your
             daughter's testimony under oath.

                                           (CONTINUED)
                                                            55.

This tears Frederick apart, and he looks down at the table
in silence, trying to hide his emotions.

INT. OBSERVATION ROOM -- CONTINUOUS

Minelli watches with Rigsby and the District Attorney.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
             A former congressman, who would
             tell?

                         RIGSBY
             Will he serve time?

                         LOS ANGELES D.A.
For statutory rape, it'll be very
             hard without Patricia's testimony,
but we'll sure indict him for
             capital murder.

The District Attorney then turns to shake Minelli's hands,
who feigns an utterly relieved smile.

                         LOS ANGELES D.A. (CONT'D)
Thank you for your cooperation. I
             expect an indictment by tomorrow.

                         MINELLI
Sure, sir, it was our pleasure.

INT. HOSPITAL ROOM -- DAY

Cho, Rigsby, Lisbon are gathered around VAN PELT, in a
hospital bed, wearing a neck brace, and smiling happily.

Jane enters the room with a small box.

                         JANE
I could not find donuts, but I
             found the perfect lemon cake.

                         CHO
             You could not find donuts?

                         JANE
Well, I thought I would try
             something different.

Jane starts offering.

                         CHO
I don't dwell on lemon or pineapple
             for that matter.

                         VAN PELT
             I'll have one.

                         JANE
Oh, yes, can I give you a hug?

                                              (CONTINUED)
                                                               56.

CONTINUED:

                           VAN PELT
             Careful.

He gives a hug, then the cake. Rigsby stands nearby,
worried, he must have asked this question a dozen times.

                           RIGSBY
Are you ok? Feeling angry about
             anything?

                           VAN PELT
I'm fine. Why do you keep asking
             that?

Lisbon pulls Jane aside.

                         LISBON
You never really cared about the
             limestones, did you?

                         JANE
Nah. It was just a control
question. He was lying from the
             moment he walked in.

Minelli suddenly storms into the room. Everyone suddenly
stand up to attention.

                           MINELLI
             Jane!

                           JANE
             Uh, yes.

                         MINELLI
How did you convince the D.A. into
             one of your schemes?

                           JANE
             Well, I --

                         MINELLI
             -- No, don't tell me. I don't
             want to know.

                         JANE
                 (offering)
             Lemon cake?

His CELL PHONE suddenly rings. He hands the box to Lisbon.

                         JANE (CONT'D)
             Patrick Jane.

A male voice answers. RED JOHN.

                         RED JOHN
That was nice. Very, very nice.

                         RED JOHN (CONT'D)
I did not like the District
             Attorney's performance, though.
             Bit theatrical. But other than
             that, kudos for you.

Jane's expression suddenly changes.

                         JANE
Thank you. I can't wait for our
             next meeting.

                         RED JOHN
Now, that you're off the case,
it'll be a little harder. But
I'll find a way, after I deal with
             your nemesis.

He hangs up. Jane stares at the void for a second.

                           LISBON
             Who was it?

                           JANE
             Red John.

The room goes in a sudden serious mode, a constant reminder
that evil is a never ending constant that will probably
haunt them for the rest of their lives.

                                                  FADE OUT.

                              THE END
