Social Studies
Mrs. Vickery/ Mr. Long
On Monday, students will be performing their vocabulary rap songs. For the rest of the week we will be studying
the ancient African kingdoms by creating foldables. We will be moving into the colonial period with drawings and
class discussions.

Mr. Miller
This week in social studies we will be studying the ancient empires of Africa. These empires consist of Ghana,
Songhai, Ethiopia, and Mali. We will be studying the major leaders of these empires and the major cities as well.

Mrs. Rice
Last week, students researched the Ghana, Mali, and Songhai empires and learned why Timbuktu and Djenne
were important cities in West Africa during the salt-gold trade. We will add one more empire this week: Ethiopia. In
addition, we will begin investigating the origins of the African slave trade and learn how Africa, Europe, and the
Americas were all affected by this practice.

Counseling News-Career Day
Dear Otwell Middle School Parents:

As part of our effort to help our students understand the importance of career
decisions, we have planned some special activities for them. On Wednesday,
January 30, 2007 from 9:05 – 11:05 a.m. we will conduct a “Forum of Speakers”
as the main focus of our Career Development education program. In order to offer
this great event, we need parents, friends, relatives, or neighbors who can come
and discuss or demonstrate their occupations. Guests will be asked to speak to
students in small group settings in the sixth and seventh grade classrooms. If you
or someone you know would be interested in participating, please complete the
form below and return it to school with your child as soon as possible but
no later than Wednesday, December 5, 2007. Our purpose is to acquaint the
students with a wide variety of career opportunities and the attitudes necessary for
success. A letter of instruction will be sent to all volunteers. Thanks for you help
with this program.

Sincerely,

Heather L. Roth, 8th and 6-M Counselor Tom Pelky, 7th and 6-O Counselor
