 Flickr
and
 YouTube
.

Social media is useful for almost every type of business. Wineries, cafes, yoga studios, retail
stores, antique stores and even professional services are gravitating towards social platform
technologies, such as Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn to:

   - Build their online reputation
   - Increase trust and accessibility
   - Become more personable
   - Maintain long term connections
   - Increase referrals and profitability
   - Expand their customer service

A business that invests its time wisely can improve follower (fan) and customer loyalty and
traditional word-of-mouth marketing efforts. Smart investment of time is key, as keeping up with
social media can be challenging.

For companies who desire a custom strategy and branded page approach, there are a number
of skilled social media agencies and consultants that provide local businesses with solutions to
launch, customize and manage their social media platforms.

Top social media platforms for business
Facebook

With 550 million users (and growing), Facebook is a social networking site that allows users to
upload information about themselves and connect with friends, colleagues, businesses, brands
and groups. Users can create profiles with photos, lists of personal interests, contact
information, and other personal information.

Communicating with friends and other users can be done through private or public messages
and a chat feature. Users can also create and join "like” facebook pages, which are maintained
by organizations as a means of advertising.

                                                                                             3/7

There are several primary ways to participate on Facebook, yet for the purpose of this article,
we will focus on Profiles and Pages.  Each one of these is used differently, so we will cover
them individually.

Personal Profiles (Private)

This is where you should start on Facebook, whether you are participating for fun or on behalf of
a company. Facebook profiles are private by default – only the people that you add as “friends”
can view your personal profile, and they are designed to be used by individuals. You will use
this as your account to log into Facebook, so you should work on building your personal profile
before starting any other efforts on Facebook.

Please note: Do not create a personal profile for your company. Profiles are designed to be
private and for personal use only, which makes it difficult for people to interact with your
company. We’ll talk about better ways to have a company presence on Facebook next.

Facebook Pages (Public)

Facebook Pages (formerly called “Fan Pages”) are publicly viewable, which makes them much
better for a branded presence, since anyone can “Like” and become a follower or fan of your
company without any additional interaction or approvals. People are effectively using pages for
companies, products, bands, shows, special interest groups, and much more.

Facebook pages have many of the same features as profile pages, but with information that is
geared toward companies and business sectors rather than individuals.  For example, Splash
Cafe is
a powerful example of a branded (and viral) Facebook Page account.

Business Application:

   - Post news and comments

                                                                                            4/7
