o Italian, but spent most of his life in Spain o His father Alessandro did almost exclusively vocal music  Musical Features o Repeated notes sound like a guitar o Were writing for harpsichord o Scarlatti wrote sonatas – 555 single movement sonatas o His sonatas are basically in binary form  Technical challenges – o Lots of repeated notes, crossing hands, big skips, many pieces are fast  Catalog – L. (Longo), K. (Kirkpatrick)

G. Handel – (1685 Known for: o Oratorio – religious, not staged   Messiah – most famous o Operas – more famous for his operas in his Keyboard Works: o Suites – 2 types of Baroque Suites    Dance Suites (Bach – not Handel) Not Dance Suites (Handel) – wrote about 16 of them – Sonata de chiesa Order of Movements     Slow Fast Slow Fast

o His best known suite – The harmonious blacksmith o Variations and Fugue on a Theme of Handel (Brahms)
