Spend a lesson watching your student practice Most practicing will consist of running through the piece (vein repetition) Practicing needs to be goal oriented: Lessons at the Moscow Conservatory  Never called lessons, always called ‘practice’  Supervised Practice Sessions  Teacher had 4 students  Every student had several hours of lessons, everyday  Typical of the teachers in the Moscow Conservatory Some things we could suggest to our students for practicing:               Identify the most difficult sections – 100% know this How many practice this first? – maybe 1% How many spend more time on their difficult sections than the easier sections – 2% Human nature – we spend time playing the parts that are easy Have students understand why they are working on a certain section Have students graduate from mindless practicing to thoughtful practicing Once – no mistakes, Second Time – no mistakes, Third Time – no mistakes, moving mints across the piano Have the student teach you – only purposefully mess up certain things – phrasing, balance… Shadow Practicing – Move one hand – not actually play the other hand Counting – have them sing the notes and say the rhythm with them Make it goal oriented Fur Elise – you can always tell if a student is counting!

Try counting 100% of the time Practice under tempo – this is the only way to improve it so you can focus on what you are doing…”Slow enough that you can think, but fast enough that it sounds like it fits…”  5 Golden Tempos – Take half of the tempo – 120 – 60 evenly divide – 60, 72, 84, 96, 108, 120 My Enemy List  A list of spots to really work on

   Practice  

Not just play it through 20 times Go over the list each day Enemies because we don’t know them well in Sections Student’s don’t want to do it… Two post-it notes – one section where that begins, one where it ends  Progress Looks like this: Don’t expect that the progress will be completely up – Day 2 might be a little less than the end of Day 1
