Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation 2006-2007 Annual Report

Passion for research Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation 2006-2007 Annual Report Our Guiding Principles Vision: To solve the mysteries, de-stigmatize, and find cures and better treatments for mental illness and addiction through long-term research funding. Our Message The 2006-2007 fiscal year signified the beginning of an exciting new quarter century in the life of the Canadian Psychiatric Research Foundation (CPRF). Some highlights included: • Key Senior Management Changes Joan Montgomery moved from the Associate Executive Director position into the Executive Director’s role following Judy Hills’ move to The Psychology Foundation of Canada. • Reorganization of the Education and Knowledge Translation Programs Under Alex Lowy’s leadership, the Education and Awareness Program was divided into two separate projects (Youth and Workplace initiatives) to enhance our efforts in these distinctly different areas. Newly formed project management teams headed up by newcomers Jean Milligan (Youth) and Erika Pond Clements (Workplace) are successfully driving these initiatives forward. Thanks to Krista Saleh, who got these initiatives off the ground and has since moved on to become a freelance consultant. • Revamping of the Fundraising Program Our flagship President’s Luncheon evolved into the Silver Dinner featuring guest speaker Christopher Kennedy Lawford, our Psyche in the Lab Celebrating Brain Science in Canada book was successfully launched at the National Club and planning began for an inaugural golf tournament; all due to the collective efforts of Bill Best, David Feather, Inta Kierans, Dale Rakowsky, Anil Shah, Chris Susel, Andrea Swinton and Elizabeth Vanstone. • Strategic Plan Finally, the senior volunteer and management team, under the direction of Bill Best began developing a five-year strategic plan, which included new guiding principles proudly showcased opposite. Our achievements over this past year are the result of the dedicated work of many more people including our Board of Directors, Professional Advisory Board, committee members, volunteers, researchers, community partners, staff and most importantly, our donors. It is through their efforts we were able to support 14 researchers at eight universities, teaching hospitals and research institutes across the country in 2006–2007. Sincerely, Mission: To improve the well being of Canadians by funding mental health and addiction research to build healthier lives. Mandate: – To raise and distribute funds for mental health and addiction research. – To translate the knowledge gained from mental health and addiction research. – To advocate for mental health and addiction research investment. Core Values: – A passion for scientifically significant research and its translation into reality. – A dedication to growing a strong funding base to support research communities. – A commitment to support our Professional Advisory Board and their selection of the best third party research projects. Kevin McNeil, Chair, CPRF Joan Montgomery, Executive Director, CPRF Passion for Research INVESTING IN RESEARCH This year CPRF funded 14 mental health and addiction researchers at eight institutions across the country. Since 1980, fundraising activities have resulted in the funding of over 350 researchers at 42 Canadian universities, teaching hospitals and research institutes. Thanks to our key funding supporters and partners: AstraZeneca Canada Inc., CIBC World Markets Children’s Foundation, Canadian Institutes of Health Research, RBC Financial Group and the Schizophrenia Society of Canada for making this possible. Congratulations to CPRF’s 2006–2007 grant recipients. Please visit our website for more details on the research projects funded. Open Mind CPRF’s Annual Open Mind workshop was hosted in April 2006 at the BMO Learning Centre where over 200 participants learned about the latest mental health issues youth face today. Through the support of the Ontario Trillium Foundation, RBC Financial Group, and the Charles and Marilyn Gold Family Foundation, the Open Mind is expanding to include a series of cross Canada workshops scheduled for the spring of 2007. Profiling CPRF funded research and research from partnering organizations, this series will provide knowledge translation, best and evidenced based practices on youth related topics such as depression, suicide, culture and mental health and stigma. Workshops will be offered in Ontario (one each in Toronto, York and Peel Regions) Calgary and for the first time in Quebec. Partners and Volunteers CPRF is excited to be partnering with FFAPAMM (Fédération des Familles et Amis de la Personne Atteinte de Maladie Mentale) in Quebec, who are working with us to develop a workshop agenda that will bring much needed information regarding youth and mental health to the Francophone community. Through the Open Mind series, CPRF has recruited 60 new volunteers representing national, provincial, local community agencies/networks and researchers. These volunteers are assisting in the development and delivery of our workshops ensuring the content is reflective of the needs of each community. With the changing direction of this project, several original members of CPRF’s Youth Committee who volunteered countless hours to help develop our When Something’s Wrong handbook series have stepped down from the committee while others have joined CPRF’s Workplace Project. The Workplace In January, 2006 thanks to the generosity of founding sponsors, The Frank Cowan Foundation, this project was initiated with the development of a committee comprised of a wide range of experts in the field. Under the direction of Committee Chair, Alex Lowy and our project team, Krista Saleh, Erika Pond Clements, and Sandra Moll, who has taken on the daunting task of shaping and writing When Something’s Wrong: Strategies for the Workplace, the development of the handbook has begun. Their efforts were further augmented by input provided by a focus group organized by the Cowan Benefits Consulting, which met in October, 2006. In fall 2007, we look forward to the official launch of When Something’s Wrong: Strategies for the Workplace. In the latter part of the fiscal year, we were pleased to have Canada Post Corporation come on board as a contributor. In March, 2007 we worked with their management team to provide Canada Post with the first of two workshops aimed at helping management deal with the issues of mental health in their workplace. We would like to thank all our volunteers for their contributions and ongoing support of CPRF’s education and knowledge translation programs which are helping us to raise money for mental health and addiction research. A new supporters dinner was hosted at the home of Board member, Elizabeth Vanstone in October 2006. At this dinner the idea of a CPRF Golf Classic was introduced and work began on this inaugural golf tournament to be held on July 12, 2007 at the Club at Bond Head, Ontario. Planning also began for the second annual Silver Dinner to be held on November 28, 2007 at the Four Seasons Hotel in Toronto, Ontario featuring special guest speaker Oscar® nominated actress Mariel Hemingway. Psyche in the Lab Celebrating Brain Science in Canada Book Launch May 23, 2006 National Club, Toronto, Ontario A new stewardship program featuring new levels of recognition is unveiled in this annual report.
