 G ETTING THERE
Gardenia Escape is on the ground floor at
4 Gardenia Street, Nightcliff. It’s about five
minutes by car from the Darwin Airport, and 10
minutes by car from the city. If coming by car,
the easiest route by car is to leave the airport,
turn left onto McMillan’s Road, right onto
Bagot Road, left at the lights onto Nightcliff
Road, then quickly into the right lane, left into
Gardenia Street, and then house is on your left
(13 houses down, 2nd on your left before the
end of the street). If coming by taxi the fare
should be no more than $20.

 G ETTING IN
Advance notice of your arrival is preferred
so we can meet you on site. If arriving in the
middle of the night please call the day before
and we will give you instructions to let yourself
in. Please note there is a small dog at the house
 – she is very friendly, doesn’t bark, and doesn’t
bite or bother people. She may blink an eyelid
when you arrive but that’s about it.

 G ETTING COOL
Being on the ground floor and well shaded by
verandahs and tropical trees, and with plenty
of louvres throughout this apartment is cool all
year round. Temperatures in the dry season sit
around 18 degrees in the mornings and around
28 degrees throughout the day. In the wet
 season temperatures sit around 26 – 34
degrees. To maximise natural cooling, maximise
airflow: open all doors, windows, curtains and
louvres, and switch on the overhead fans.

Life in the tropics really is much better without aircond – however, some days are just too hot and sticky,
and the apartment is also fitted with airconditioning. Please consider the environment and only use the
aircond when necessary. The main unit has super-fast cooling capacity, so it only takes a few minutes to cool
the whole apartment down. Please ensure all doors and windows are closed when you have the aircond on,
and always turn it off before you go out.

For efficiency and comfort, it’s generally better to run the airconds at a slightly higher temperature (say 26
degrees) with the overhead fans on low, than to run them at 22 or 23 degrees. This will provide an ambient
temperature and circulate humidity (ie less dry), and is kinder to the environment and your skin than running
them at a colder temperature without fans.

 G ETTING AROUND

 T HINGS TO DO
There’s heaps to do around Nightcliff and the local area, and many activities are free.

From here you could explore the many parks nearby including the meandering Darwin Water Gardens and
 Rapid Creek; take in a day's fishing on Darwin harbour (bigger than Sydney harbour, and with more fish!);
explore the beautiful Nightcliff foreshore or cycle or on foot; go for a sunset sail; or just relax in the shade
with a book at Nightcliff Pool, overlooking the Arafura Sea.

Don’t forget to stroll the Nightcliff foreshore, from McKay Gardens right around to the Rapid Creek
footbridge. Early morning strolls are just magic.

Further afield, you could take a day trip to the magnificent waterfalls, rock pools and rainforests of Litchfield
National Park (1 hr by car); experience a spectacular jumping crocodile cruise (1 hr); or discover why Kakadu
National Park has been declared a World Heritage Area (2 hrs).

Listed below are some local things to do, plus a few things to do further a-field.

No matter what time of year you’re here, pack a picnic dinner and head to the area
to the left of Nightcliff Jetty, marked on the map as “Sunset Park, Picnic Area”. Try
to arrive before 6pm. Watch the locals walking, jogging, and cycling by while you
take in a lazy Darwin sunset away from the madding crowds of Mindil. Be sure to
stay at least an hour after sunset; the colours and textures of the sky just get
                               better and better.

Mingle with the locals and enjoy a beer or two at the Nightcliff Sports Club. You don’t need
to be a member, just sign in as you enter. Check-out the Sunday night roast dinners – 3
courses for $12.50 – cheap enough to feed the whole family, and no cooking, no dishes!
Tuesday is Parmigiana or Schnitzel night, Wednesday is Yearling Rump Steak, cooked just
the way you like it. If you’re sporting-inclined, take in a game of footy on Sunday afternoon
                     at the adjoining oval.

If you’re here during the dry on a Friday, Saturday or Sunday night, treat
yourself to gourmet wood-fired pizza. Head to the Nightcliff Pool before sunset,
and just to the right in the carpark you’ll see a bright orange outdoor food stall.
Take a bottle of wine and a picnic blanket with you, and enjoy one of the best
pizza’s I’ve ever tasted, al fresco, sitting on the cliffs overlooking the sun setting
into the Arafura sea. The pizzas are cooked to perfection by Lisette Monsello, a
5-star gourmet Italian chef who threw in the big city hustle for a sea-change in
Darwin. You can read more about Lisette and her wood fired pizzas here:

on in town at the time**

road from McKay Gardens). You might notice a few locals digging into the
sand with sticks – they’re collecting cockels (to eat). Be sure to leave
yourself enough time to get back to shore before the tide comes in!

In the little Aralia Street shopping centre you’ll find a little shop filled with brightly coloured fabrics and
beautiful beautiful dresses. Welcome to Raw Cloth, an experience in ‘infused couture’ by
mother and daughter team Rhonda and Jo. Starting out with a small stall at Nightcliff Market,
Raw Cloth has subsequently grown to be recognised as one of Australia’s most promising
emerging designers, featuring in Vogue magazine and international trade expos. They take
their inspiration from the local seasons, colours, and landscapes, and translate this into
striking high-quality clothing that is unique, beautiful, and extremely wearable. A must-visit.

On a Sunday morning, unwind and take in the quintessential Darwin lifestyle via the ambience of the
Nightcliff Markets. Set in the original Nightcliff Shopping Centre the markets are an
ideal place for an early Sunday coffee or a cool and refreshing tropical fruit salad. Be
sure to try the Vietnamese Rolls, the lime drinks (“large lime please”), anything from
Ken’s Crepes, the wonderful Malaysian Beef Roti Rolls (“salad and peanut sauce?” –
Yes Please!), and the infamous “Bobby Sate”.
A casual wander around Nightcliff Markets will likely unearth an unusual bargain or a
unique gift to take home. Stalls display a wide variety of original crafts such as
copper sculptures, fairy dresses, hemp designer clothing and traditional Asian crafts.
Sarongs from Alison (near the ATM) make a great and easily transported gift. You
must also try a packet of dried Dragon Fruit from Ed’s, directly opposite the ATM (why not buy an organic
paw paw (papaya) and some locally grown buffalo tomatoes while you’re there?)

There are also massage, reflexology, card reading and many more ‘alternative’ stalls – don’t be shy, this is a
chance to immerse yourself in the local lifestyle. When you’ve finished, find a shady table and enjoy the live
and original entertainment from local artists performing on the central stage.

Nightcliff Markets operates every Sunday (even in the rain!) from 8am – 2pm, and there is a central
 playground for kiddies.

rocks around you. Can you see them? There are about 12 in total, some in groups, and some separate.

 SWIM IN N I G HT C LI F F A Q UA T I C C EN T R E (N I G H T C LI F F P O O L )
This sparkling swimming centre is built right on the cliff overlooking the Arafura Sea. The pool facilities
include swimming, lap lanes and a beautiful children’s pool with an
Italian style fountain in the middle. There’s also a bicycle rack, snacks,
hot and cold drinks, and barbeque and picnic facilities.

The pools are partially shade-clothed with plenty of trees for shade as
well, and VERY RELAXING. The palm trees scattered about provide
welcome shade and that hypnotic rustling of the dry leaves in the
breeze, mixed with the smell of sea salt lulls you into a trance on a
                                               warm summer day.

Entry is only $3.00 with discounts for families, and you can stay as long as you like. Make a day of it and stay
the whole day, dozing beneath the trees to the sounds of the ocean between dips in the pool, pies, and icy-
poles. A great day for families and couples or relaxing time on your own. Open from 6am – 7.30pm most
 days.

 M ARKETS
Darwin thrives on its outdoor laid-back multicultural lifestyle, fostered in large part by the colourful open-air
markets that form an intrinsic part of everyday life for locals. Visit at least two of them while you’re here,
 and take your time.

 P A R A P M A R K E T Parap Shopping Village Parap Road. 100-odd stalls, great food and excellent craft.
Infamous for its Laksa (curry soup). Lots of hand-made unusual gifts. Every Saturday morning, 7am – 1pm.

 N I G H T C L I F F M A R K E T Nightcliff Shopping Village Progress Drive. 100-odd food and craft stalls, more laid-
back and leisurely than Parap. Plenty of shade, outdoor seating, live entertainment (usually between 10am –
1pm), kids playground. My favourite. Every Sunday morning, 8am – 2pm.

 R A P I D C R E E K M A R K E T , Rapid Creek Shopping Village, Trower Road. 150-ish food, craft, and plant stalls.
Lots of locally grown fruit and veggies, including exotic and Asian vegetables, and an Organic shop. Every
 Sunday morning, 7am – 1pm.

 M I N D I L B E A C H S U N S E T M A R K E T Mindil Beach during the Dry Season. You’ve heard the stories, they’re all
true. An absolute must-do in Darwin, 10,000 or more people, 80 food stalls, 300 craft stalls, heaps and heaps
of live and local entertainment, playgrounds, jumping castles, you name it, it’s at Mindil. Plus the
magnificent sunsets across Fannie Bay. Get there before 5 to find a carpark. Follow Dick Ward Drive / East
Point Road to the city or take Number 4 Bus. Every Thursday 4pm – 10pm for the main event, Sundays 4pm –
9pm for a less-crowded smaller market, from the last Thursday in April to the last Thursday in October.
