SLGGS Careers Bulletin 19 June 2009 Design Your Future UCAS are holding an exhibition at London ExCel on 17/18 November for students interested in exploring the wide range of courses available within design, art and related creative subjects. Courses covered include ceramics and glass; digital media art and design; fashion; furniture; graphic design; illustration and book art; jewellery and designed metal; mobile phone graphics; photography; sonic art and sound; theatre and scenic arts and three dimensional design – amongst others! You will be able to talk directly with representatives from a large number of institutions around the UK and will get a chance to view the work of current students, pick up prospectuses, take part in workshops and watch films relating to various subjects. One-Day Medical Conference for Future Medics at UCL, London The Advanced Topics on Medicine (ATOM) 2009 Conference will be held at University College London (UCL) on Sunday 4 October. It’s a one-day conference for students in Yr 12/13 who want to optimize their UCAS applications and their chances of gaining entry to Medical School. The conference includes: • a one-to-one UCAS Personal Statement Review with a current doctor • BMAT Q&A session • 2 mock medical school interviews • personal DVD of your interviews • news about cutting-edge medical research • additional teaching sessions on topics useful for interviews and more Parents are welcome to attend the ATOM 2009 Parent Session. This is normally for one year, however this could possibly be extended. The scholarship positions involve assisting and working in the training centre and gaining some very good and valuable office work experience and with helping learners, as well as learning all the computer skills or book keeping skills required for the job market, depending on the choice of the diploma the learner wants to do. This will result in the successful applicants achieving a nationally recognised Pitman Training Diploma, they will also gain valuable work experience within an office and training environment, they will receive help with creating or updating their CV, as well as have a reference for the future. On completion of the scholarship positions, they will have help with finding further employment to move onto, or possibly be offered a position here if available. There are lots of other courses on offer with Pitman Training at 16/17 High Street, Canterbury. There are no age limits and no entry requirements and you can study at a time to suit you. Gap Year Projects in South America Africa & Asia Venture (AV) are now offer volunteering experiences from five weeks to five months, in Costa Rica and Ecuador. This complements their existing schemes in Africa, Asia and Mexico. The scholarships guarantee at least 50% of tuition fees, board and lodgings at over 120 US universities. Full details of the events, including costs and an application form are available at www.epoc.org.uk Kent Vocational Training Placements The Kent Vocational Training Placements programme from Kent County Council, aims to encourage young people to consider a career in social care when they leave school by providing them with real experience of the discipline of employment and the opportunities provided by a variety of work within the social care sector. Activities are very varied in care and include: Landscaping; sport; carpentry; nail painting; catering; music; riding etc. Placements are from half-days up to 4 days a week, from 6 weeks to 2 years or more. New Ski Instructor Course for Gap Year Students Gapforce have introduced “Skiforce” a ski instructor training course for students on their gap year. The Gapforce family of companies offers adventures around the world, volunteering with major partners like the Red Cross, UNESCO and AWF, and training programmes for Dive, Ski and Expedition instructors. The conglomeration of ‘Forces’ signifies the diverse options available to enthusiastic travellers.
