May all the knowledge and experience you have gained at St. Eugene’s serve you well in the future. You will always be in our prayers. Our New Cabinet As I mentioned back in February, I recently had the good fortune of receiving a first-class relic of St. Paul. The relic is an actual piece of bone from the body of St. Paul. Thanks to the generosity of our Altar and Rosary Society, the relic of St. Paul now sits alongside a first-class relic of St. Andrew the Apostle, and a firstclass relic of St. Eugene, our patron saint, in a brand new cabinet. The new cabinet, located in our vestibule, was paid for by our Altar and Rosary Society. It was built by Mr. Brent Marker (a parishioner) and his friend Mr. Heinz Grote. They did a wonderful job, and I invite everyone to go to the vestibule and see the beautiful new cabinet that holds the relics of St. Paul, St. Andrew, and St. Eugene. These wonderful treasures of our faith can now be venerated by everyone. As I mentioned in a previous article, we do not worship relics; we venerate them (we hold them in great honor). Veneration of relics is a pious practice. Invoking the saints to intercede for us is in keeping with a practice that goes back to the very beginnings of our church. The saints are family. It is good that we now have St. Paul, St. Andrew, and St. Eugene within the walls of our church building. A parishioner has recently inquired about the different types of relics. For the sake of clarification, I am going to reprint a portion of my article from February. Simply put, a relic is an object connected with a saint. It may be the whole or a part of the saint’s body, or something the saint has touched, e.g., a garment. There are three types of relics: a first-class relic, a second-class relic, and a third-class relic. A first-class relic is an actual part of the saint’s body, such as a piece of bone or a lock of hair. A second-class relic is something used by the saint or a piece of clothing worn by the saint. A third-class relic is any other object, such as a piece of cloth that has been touched to a first-class relic. The relics in our new cabinet are all first-class relics. The seal of the Vatican (placed on the back of the small container that holds the bone) is intact and this marks the authenticity of our relics. Again, please take a moment to view this new addition to our church. A special blessing will be taking place (probably at the end of June) upon the cabinet. Yours in Christ, Bulletin copy MUST be in the rectory office NO LATER THAN 12:00 NOON EACH MONDAY. SCHEDULING THE USE OF PARISH FACILITIES AUGUST 2009 THRU JUNE 30, 2010 The calendar year for the use of parish facilities by parish ministries is from August 1st through June 30th. During the month of July no events are scheduled. This allows time for the extensive summer cleaning and repairs in the buildings. When summer maintenance projects require August scheduling, part or all of August may also be unavailable for use by parish and other organizations. The calendar committee will meet after July 1, 2009 to approve the scheduling of events for the months through June 2010. All organizations requesting space must submit the official scheduling forms (available in the rectory). Forms must be completed in full and returned to the rectory no later than June 30, 2009 No organization should assume that the space and meeting times available in past years will continue to be available during the 2009-10 school year. All groups and parish organizations are, therefore, reminded to await the confirmation of available space for dates submitted before finalizing plans for events. THANK YOU AND CONGRATULATIONS A special “Thank You” from the St. Eugene Parish Pastoral Council to our outgoing members, Patricia Conlon and Lisa Vasich, for their dedicated work to the parish. A hearty “Congratulations” to our newest members, Matt Cassidy and Millisa Vasich. We welcome you and look forward to working with you in the years ahead! Page Four St. Eugene Parish The Most Holy Trinity RUBLEV’S TRINITY June 7, 2009 St. Eugene Parish Page Five RUBLEV’S TRINITY Many scholars consider Rublev's Trinity the most perfect of all Russian icons and perhaps the most perfect of all the icons ever painted. The work was created for the abbot of the Trinity Monastery, Nikon of Radonezh, a disciple of the famous Sergius, one of the leaders of the monastic revival in the 14th-century Russia. From the earliest times, the idea of the Trinity was controversial and difficult to understand. It gave the believers a monotheistic religion with a difficult concept of one God in three hypostases -God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit. Not only the uneducated population but many theologians had difficulties with the concept of the triune God. Trying to portray the Trinity, but always aware of the Biblical prohibition against depicting God, icon painters turned to the story of the hospitality of Abraham who was visited by three wanderers. (Gen. 18:1-8). In their compositions, icon painters included many details -- the figures of Abraham and Sarah, a servant killing a calf in preparation for the feast, the rock, the tree of Mamre, and the house (tent) -- trying to render as faithfully as possible the events described in the text: Very few artists before Rublev dared to eliminate all the narrative elements from the story, leaving only the three angels; usually those who did so had to deal with limited space. Rublev was the first to make a conscious decision not to include in his composition the figures of Abraham and Sarah because he did not set out to illustrate the story of the hospitality of Abraham, as did many painters before him, but to convey through his image the idea of the unity and indivisibility of the three persons of the Trinity. In Rublev's icon for the first time all the angels are equally important. Only this icon truly conforms to the Orthodox idea of the Trinity. But Rublev's genius allows the painter to go beyond the constraints of theological theme. His icon is a special kind of challenge to the antitrinitarians -- instead of forcing them to accept the dogma, Rublev softly and gently tries to bring them to the dogmatic understanding of the icon's meaning. The cup on the table is an eucharistic symbol. In the cup we see the head of the calf which Abraham used for the feast. The church interprets this calf as a prototype of the New Testament Lamb, and thus the cup acquires its Eucharistic meaning. The left and the middle angels bless the cup: The Father blesses His Son on his Deed, on His death on the cross for the sake of man's salvation, and the Son, blessing the cup, expresses his readiness to sacrifice Himself. The third angel does not bless the cup and does not participate in the conversation, but is present as a Comforter, the undying, a symbol of eternal youth and the upcoming Resurrection. "Andrew Rublev painted this icon not only to share the fruits of his own meditation on the mystery of the Holy Trinity but also to offer his fellow monks a way to keep their hearts centered in God while living in the midst of political unrest. The more we look at this holy image with the eyes of faith, the more we come to realize that it is painted not as a lovely decoration for a convent church, nor as a helpful explanation of a difficult doctrine, but as a holy place to enter and stay within.” -- Henri Nouwen Page Six St. Eugene Parish The Most Holy Trinity ST. THE SICK LIST HAS BEEN UPDATED. PLEASE CALL THE RECTORY IF YOU WOULD LIKE A NAME LISTED. ADDING NAMES TO THE PARISH SICK LIST It has always been the goal of St. Eugene to offer our parish community an opportunity to pray for those parishioners who are ill and in need of our prayers. We have tried to keep close track of these names for our Bulletin as they are made available to us. However, now we face an important privacy issue, very much like the issues faced by hospitals, health institutions, and certainly by other parishes. We cannot (by law) publicly let our parish community know the health status of any of our members without their permission. We appreciate the fact that often friends, neighbors, and acquaintances wish to do something special for a person who is ill, and ask to place their name on the list to be prayed for. While their intentions are surely good, we simply can no longer accept names in this manner. We are instituting a new process regarding calling in names for the Bulletin list. Names for the sick list placed in the Bulletin have to be called in by the person who is ill, or by a member of their immediate family. At the time they call in the name, they will be asked whether they are the sick person him/herself, or a member of their family, and if they give permission for the name to be placed on the list. They will be asked for the correct spelling of the sick person's name. If a family member, they will be required to give their name for our records. Thank you for your patience regarding this new process. We wish to do all we can to offer our parish community the opportunity to offer prayers for those who are ill — but we must also be cognizant of the fact that all members of our congregation are entitled to their privacy in this regard. At the time of a family member’s death, if you would like memorials to be made to St. Eugene Parish, please instruct the Funeral Home to use the following in the death notice: “In lieu of flowers, a memorial may be made to St. Eugene Parish, Foster Avenue, Chicago.” Envelopes can be provided by the Funeral Home.
