MBA Bulletin Michigan Bankers Association 507 S. Grand Ave. • Lansing, MI 48933 • 517-485-3600 April 21, 2006 Group Meeting Schedule 2006 Group 9 May 8 Monroe Golf & Country Club – Monroe (Lunch mtg followed by 1 p.m. shotgun start) DFCU Drops Bid to Convert to Mutual Savings Bank Attacks from CU Interest Groups Prove too Intense for Handcuffed “Bank” DFCU Financial, formerly Dearborn Federal Credit Union, announced earlier this week that it will end its attempt to convert to a mutual savings bank. Faced with a massive negative publicity campaign waged by credit union trade groups, and statutorily unable to respond, DFCU withdrew its application to convert. The DFCU board said in a statement that the decision was made based on member feedback and “the level of misinformation that has resulted from the communication constraints imposed by the prescribed regulatory conversion process.” ABA President and CEO Ed Yingling responded, “We agree with the management of DFCU that this process has been completely skewed by the [National Credit Union Administration] and some in the credit union industry, both of which have a clear and public bias against conversions. The process ties the hands of the credit union leadership, while allowing opponents free rein to put out highly misleading information. We believe Congress should restate its intent that credit unions should have a clear path to conversion.” DFCU is the largest credit union in Michigan at $1.8 billion in assets and would have been the largest credit union in the nation to convert to a mutual savings bank. Because Michigan Banks are joining this exceptional program every month, the incentives from Harland have been moving to new, higher levels on a regular basis. By pooling together the collective purchasing power of community banks in Michigan together with nine other States (AZ, ID, WA, NV, OR, UT, VA, TN & MS) we have been able to maximize the core check program benefits available for participating banks. Better pricing, exceptional service, quality guarantees and complimentary products, coupled with a focus on meeting the needs of community and regional banks are the primary reasons that have allowed the MBA Service Corporation to provide bankers with the best value possible when selecting a check program partner. The foundation of a strong core program doesn’t limit the capability of the MBASC and Harland to custom-tailor key elements to help your bank with individualized customer satisfaction, efficiency, technology and profitability goals. The MBA Service Corporation will provide significant income to your bank on the purchase of all Harland printed products including checks, deposits tickets, savings packages, and related products. • Harland provides complimentary items such as New Account Kits (Personal & Business), SmarterStarter Software & Installation, Employee Check Orders and Counter Documents free of charge, excluding delivery. • The MBASC/Harland Check Program provides important support to the banking industry in Michigan and the Michigan Bankers Association. It assists with efforts to provide a favorable environment for bankers operating in the state and numerous other proactive roles the MBA plays on behalf of Michigan bankers. • This unique program provides for increases in the incentive percentage as the total pool of MBASC/ Harland check sales grows. Your level of profitability will increase automatically and incrementally as the collective volumes of the banks participating in the partnership increases. • Harland has a variety of technology solutions that can make managing your check program more efficient and enable you to deliver a higher level of service for your customers. Online check ordering via most bank platforms, Automated Check Order Entry, Internet-Based Check Ordering, Fax Ordering, etc… are all available. • Harland Business Solutions is a referral based program for customers to order computer checks through Harland. An incentive for all computer checks is available. • The MBASC Check Program includes high percentage guarantees of service quality, turnaround time, and order accuracy. • Professional program management is a key element in our partnership. MBA News MBA Promotes Direct Deposit with Go Direct MBA is partnering with Go Direct, a national campaign sponsored by the U.S. Department of the Treasury and the Federal Reserve Bank, to encourage people who get Social Security payments by check to switch to direct deposit. Enrolling people in direct deposit has been a longstanding effort by the Treasury for many years. Go Direct is a great campaign for Michigan banks to be involved in – because direct deposit is simply the best way to receive Social Security and Supplemental Security Income payments. Direct deposit eliminates the risk of lost or stolen checks, reduces fraud and gives people more control over their money. Plus, direct deposit provides people with immediate access to their money from virtually everywhere. Direct deposit also saves taxpayers millions of dollars. If every person who gets Social Security check payments switched to direct deposit, it would save taxpayers about $120 million a year. Almost all money saved remains in the Social Security Trust Fund – a benefit to all Americans for years to come. We can play a key role in motivating people who get federal benefits to switch to direct deposit. The Go Direct campaign makes it easy by providing support tools, including a quick step-by-step guide to train staff and volunteers on how to approach people about direct deposit as well as campaign material and program ideas. All these tools can be found on the special Partner section of the Go Direct Web site at http://www.GoDirect.org/Partners.html. MBA is pleased to support this important initiative to help ensure people’s finances are safe and secure – and accessible. For more information about Go Direct or to order material, please call (312) 988-2081 or visit www. GoDirect.org (English) and www.DirectoASuCuenta. org (Spanish) to learn about partnership and volunteer opportunities. Michigan Financial Literacy Don’t Forget! Training Opportunity There is a Teach Children to Save training opportunity coming to the MBA on May 11. It is an excellent opportunity to receive hands-on training regarding effectively teaching and utilizing the ABA Education Foundation’s Teach Children to Save Kits. You will learn first-hand how to use this readymade resource. Plus, you will receive the TCTS kits which you can take back to your bank and begin using in the classroom. This seminar also features a unique networking lunch. The classroom will be divided into four sections. Each group will be moderated by a peer to discuss a relevant financial literacy issue. The cost of registration includes the price of the ABA kits, or if you have already bought the combination 2006 kit, you only have to pay the registration fee (and of course bring the kit with you). You may register on the MBA website or fax in the registration form attached to the brochure. We hope all of you can attend, or can send a representative from your bank. Most Teens Can’t Balance Checkbook A recent study by the Charles Schwab Foundation discovered that while 61 percent of teenagers know how to write a check, only 41 percent know how to balance a checkbook. Only 48 percent know how to budget their money. We have to do a better job educating our children on the basic fundamentals of financial health. The ABA’s Teach Children to Save Day is Tuesday, April 25. Please make plans to participate. This column is designed to keep bankers informed of upcoming financial literacy campaigns and to share success stories with other Michigan bankers. If your bank has a story and/or pictures, please submit them to Todd Willoughby at twilloughby@mibankers.com. Click here to access the MBA’s Financial Literacy home page.
