Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy set before him
endured the cross, scorning its shame, and sat down at the right hand of God. Let us consider him
who endured such opposition and trouble for us, so that we will not grow weary and lose heart.

If any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God, who gives generously to all without finding fault, and it will be given to him.
But when he asks, he must believe and not doubt, because he who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the
wind. That man should not think he will receive anything from the Lord; he is a double-minded man, unstable in all he does.

For wise men of old, the cardinal problem of human life was how to conform the soul
to objective reality, and the solution was wisdom, self-discipline, and virtue. For the
modern mind, the cardinal problem is how to subdue reality to the wishes of man, and

     SUMMER SERMON SERIES
James writes as a pastor, and in doing so,
he counsels his readers about what it
means to live their faith as faithful
followers of Jesus Christ. Taking that as a
starting point, each message in the series
will be put in the form of a personal
question. The titles for the summer
messages are:
1. Why Do I Have Troubles?
2. What Do I Need to Face My Troubles?
3. What Types of Trouble Can I Expect?
4. How Do I Deal with Sin and Temptation?
5. How Can I Avoid Being Deceived?
6. Why Aren’t I a Better Person than I Am?
                                               WISDOM: WHY WE NEED IT
7. How Should I Relate to God’s Word?
8. How Can I Live a Life of Justice?
9. How Can I Live a Life of Mercy?
10. How Can I Live a Life of Faith? Three principles of biblical wisdom:
11. How Can I Live a Life of Self Control?
12. What’s the Key to Self Control?
13. How Can I Build Wise Relationships?

One more thing, although James’s
audience is the church, and his counsel is
primarily for believers, I hope to also
engage the questions that non-believers
might have. Even though we believe we
should be inviting our friends and
neighbors to worship, instinctively we
know that too often our sermons, while
helpful to believers, really don’t speak to
the needs, or answer the questions of non-
believers. It is my goal that in my sermons,
the thought may occur to you, “I really
wish … could be here to hear this.” Please
pray that may be the case.

    OUR WORDS TO LIVE BY
Stacy Hamilton Kimberley Faircloth Alison Bunting
At FPC we are committed to being a
congregation of fully devoted followers
of Christ guided by our WORDS to live
by.

Worship. We exist to worship God.
Worshiping God is our primary privilege Martin Hauth Dan Kennedy Wendy Brunt
and responsibility. Our church will be a
place where God is worshiped and
adored.

Outreach. We exist to share the good
news of God’s kingdom and to bring lost
people to meet God. God has called us
to be his tool for connecting people to Brenda Monaco Marla Kennedy Paul Evans
God through Jesus Christ. We will
pursue lost people on behalf of God.

Relationships. We exist to provide
fellowship for, and build relationships
among the people of God’s kingdom.
Jesus said that our defining characteristic Jeff Paul William Monk Bill Hunt
should be love for one another. Our
church will be a place where our arms
are wide open to love everyone God
brings our way.

Discipleship. We exist to strengthen
our relationship with God. Christians are
people who commit to walk with God Kay Schuh Tom Reid Tanya Straight
all of their lives. We will train and equip
people to continue to walk with God
and to be good stewards of their time,
talents and resources to build up the
body of Christ.

Service. We exist to reach into society Larry Taylor Barbara Wilson Bruce VanderWilt
with the compassion and justice of
God’s kingdom. We prepare our
members to minister to all kinds of
needs—spiritual, emotional, relational,
and physical— by encouraging them to
discover their SHAPE and to serve
where their Spiritual Gifts, Hearts,
Abilities Personalities and Experiences Lourdes Taylor Carol Winner Erin Scattergood
can have the greatest impact in God’s
Kingdom.
