   The Incredible MAYBACH EXELERO

This 700 hp (SAE) (514 KW) Uberwagen with a bi-turbo V12 engine is a one-off design commissioned by Fulda

The Maybach Exelero is a high-performance sports car designed and built by German luxury car manufacturer May-
bach. Fulda is using this car as a reference vehicle to test a new generation of wide tires. Maybach created the one-
off two-seater as a modern interpretation of its legendary streamlined sportscar from the 1930s.

In case you need to ask… $8,000,000...

There are various allusions in the Exelero’s style to its historical predecessor, the pre-WWII Maybach SW 38. Interestingly enough,
the Maybach SW 38 was also used by Fulda for tire testing.

DAILY DRIVER - Winter Driving - Simple steps to help deal with dicey roads Ken Kauffman

Winter presents many challenges for vehicle owners, not the least of which are lower temperatures, longer nights
 and changeable road conditions.

Fortunately, there are some preparatory steps drivers can take to better equip their vehicles – and themselves.
One of the most important and most often overlooked aspects of vehicle preparation is the selection of the proper tires.
Many drivers are under the impression that all-season tires are capable of handling both summer and winter driving while
“snow” tires or winter tires are reserved for those who reside in regions of the country where accumulated white stuff is a
daily fact of life. You may be surprised to learn that all-season rubber isn’t formulated to handle low temperatures in the
same way that winter rubber is. Once the mercury starts to drop, all-season tires begin to stiffen up and lose the grip that is
so critical to maintaining stability while driving. In fact, below 45 degrees Fahrenheit, vehicles equipped with all-season
tires take an average of 30 percent more distance to come to a complete stop than those sporting winter tires. At tempera-
tures below the freezing point, this number is magnified significantly, even in the complete absence of snow. If you live in
an area where temperatures routinely drop below this level, you should seriously consider investing in a set of winter tires.

There are a few other safety considerations that can make a difference in your winter bliss behind the wheel. Most
of the fluids in your vehicle, like gasoline, oil and those found in the transmission will be content to operate in colder tem-
peratures. Fluids that contain water, however, should be checked in order to make sure they can withstand a serious chill.
The windshield washer reservoir should be filled with a fluid that is advertised as containing enough alcohol to avoid turn-
ing into a solid overnight – an easy enough change to make. Radiator fluid is a little more complicated, as it requires a test
to ensure that it is still capable of protecting your engine without freezing at low temperatures. Your dealer’s service de-
partment is well equipped to ensure all your vehicle’s fluids are winter-ready.

After the hazards presented by the freezing cold, corro-
sion is often the next most-cited concern by drivers worried
about how their vehicles will react to all of the moisture and the
road treatments meant to deal with slippery travel. Road salt
itself is not such a bad thing for a vehicle’s steel panels, floors
and frame, but when combined with moisture, it can really do a
number on a car or truck’s structural integrity. A good strategy
for combating the corrosive effects of road salt is to blast it off
your car’s exterior and undercarriage periodically at a carwash,
either a touchless unit or a “wash it yourself” installation that
uses high pressure hoses. If you have a heated garage with
good drainage, then you can even do this at home.

For areas where road salt is used as liberally as possible, you may want to consider a form of undercoating to act
as a barrier between the chemical and your car or truck’s steel. There are many different types of undercoating out there.
Make sure to do your research before choosing a particular type of undercoating – some are so thick that over time, they
can trap moisture and salt between the coating and the floor and actually increase corrosion. Sometimes even a light
spraying of oil on the underside of exposed panels can form enough of a moisture barrier to keep your car safe.

There is no doubt that winter is the roughest season of all when it comes to car care and driver sanity, but with a
little preparation, you can sleep better at night knowing that you’ve done your best to protect your vehicle from the worst
 winter has to offer.

                                                 Anyone can claim excellence.

Only a handful can demonstrate it from generation to generation

Indeed, as the oldest Mercedes-Benz dealership in the Upper Midwest and one of the few in the nation
to consistently earn top marks in customer service, we are now serving the fourth generation of some of our customers,
still providing the care and handling that these great cars deserve.

We maintain the only truly full service dealership in this part of the country with the only authorized Mercedes-Benz body shop.
But, as with any company, it is our people, some with us now upward of 30 years,
who keep our customers coming back generation after generation.

Come discover what excellence really means.

Annual Meeting - Sunday January 16, 2010 - Gasthof zur Gemütlichkeit German Restaurant

Our Club’s annual meeting & election of directors & officers took place for the second year in a row at the
Gasthof zur Gemütlichkeit German Restaurant in North Minneapolis. A well-suited venue for an event like ours,
with great German food, beer and live music!

The evening started with a business meeting, including elections of directors and officers, and was followed
by a succulent German dinner during which strolling musicians serenaded us with German folk music.

The elections were carried out in two steps, as required by club bylaws.

First the members in attendance elected the two new directors
whose names had been submitted to the nominating committee: Patti 2010 DIRECTORS TERM EXPIRES

                                                                                MARK FLATEN (ex-officio) 2010
and Dave Runkle as Secretary. The club secretary does not have to be
 a director.

Our new president then profusely thanked our outgoing president Mark Flaten for his dedicated service at the
helm of the club over the past two years. He also thanked Dave Runkle for organizing the annual meeting, the outgoing
directors for their contributions to our club and expressed high expectations from our two new directors, Scott and Patti.

A delicious German dinner followed the business meeting, punctuated by the great music of the Gasthof’s stroll-
ing duo. We even got an unexpected visit from “Kaiser” Bruce Larson who belted out a few German beer-drinking songs
for us. All in all, a wonderful evening!

Valentine’s Day Brunch Ken Kamstra

The occasion was the Mercedes-Benz Club’s Brunch hosted by
Lloyd and Shirley Hubbard. It was Valentine’s Day. I was with my bride,
                            Marion, sipping champagne.

The affair was laced with food and friendship. Everyone was
                            having a good time.

But I couldn’t leave well enough alone. I had some ego and
one-upmanship issues to deal with. “Was I the first guy to buy a Mer-
cedes even before there was a club? Like maybe a quarter century be-
fore, when you could only get one at your friendly local Studebaker

I remember my first Mercedes to this day. It was a pearl grey 190 sedan. Cost only
$3,700 brand spanking new. Only four cylinders but it bombed around smartly. My seat mates did-
n’t really care about my “first Mercedes owner” status. So I stirred the pot a bit.

“Exactly when was our Mercedes Benz Club founded?”, I asked Bob Nienkerk. He and his
wife, Marylyn, were, after all, the folks who founded the club.

“Founded in November, 1982”, Bob said without hesitation. Then it happened. Other mem-
bers were equally sure it was more like 1974 or 1975. Somewhere in there.

“This could mushroom into a food fight or even fisticuffs”, I feared. Still in all, I knew Mer-
cedes people were too refined and sophisticated for food fights, Too hungry as well. And most of
us are way too old for fisticuffs.

Yet there remained a tension in the air as the members “brunched” in the elegant Lord
Fletchers dining room. Forty car lovers were enjoying a food and friendship laden Valentine’s Day.

My motive in seeking the Mercedes Cub’s birth date was innocent enough. I just wanted to
brag a little. Say something like “I bought my Mercedes 50 years ago. Had to buy it at a Stude-
baker dealer back in those days. I was a Mercedes guy long before there was a club.

My fellow clubbers didn’t really care about my status, but it was car talk and they were a
captive audience. What’s more, the champagne had greatly enhanced my eloquence.

“Must have owned a dozen of them”, I went on. “Best was my ’69 280SE. Still looks like
new. I retired it to a special hallowed home for aging Mercedes. It now shares space with ageless
classics like the massive Adenauer sedan of the infamous Hitler era. They await pains taking resto-
ration under the skilled hands of John Jacobson. John is a club member who turned his member-
ship into a full time hobby.

His sprawling Newport home encompasses lower lever car space and extensive restora-
tion facilities.

I not only entrusted my Mercedes to his care but gave him my daughter Angela’s hand in
marriage as well. Both car crazy, they met at a car show.

Back to the brunch, I owe a big thanks to my neighbors and fellow car nuts, Bill and Ginger
Simek, who took us to the brunch in their new GL450. This saved me the humiliation of showing up
in a BMW or something.

Minnesota Roads: A Sad Story... Christa Meland

 MN Roads: Deteriorating, Congested, Accident-Prone

A national transportation organization found that 32 percent of major roads in the state need
work, and 12 percent of bridges have structure problems.

Minnesota’s roads and bridges have significant deterioration, traffic conges-
tion is likely to increase, and the state’s rural roads have a high rate of fatal
crashes, according to a recent report released by a national transportation

Trip, a Washington, D.C.-based transportation research group, found that 76
percent of the state’s major urban roadways are congested during peak travel
times, and 32 percent of major roads in the state are in poor or
                        mediocre condition.

Additionally, 9 percent of the state’s bridges are structurally deficient, and 3 percent are function-
ally obsolete. The report - “Future Mobility in Minnesota: Meeting the State’s Need for Safe and Efficient
Mobility” - also found that Minnesota’s rural traffic fatality rate of 1.27 fatalities per 100 million miles of
travel is nearly two-and-a-half times higher than the fatality rate on all other roads in the state.

The report indicates that because of deficiencies in the state’s transportation system, the average motor-
ist loses $1,501 each year in the form of extra vehicle operating costs due to poor road conditions, lost
time and fuel caused by traffic congestion, and the cost of crashes.

The report highlighted the severity of the $50 billion shortfall in the
Minnesota Department of Transportation’s 20-year highway plan,
which was released last month. The plan identifies $65 billion worth
of transportation system needs, goals, and priorities—but only $15
billion in projected revenues to pay for them.

According to the report, some of the projects that most desperately
 need funding include:

 • the addition of lanes on portions of Interstate 35E, Interstate 494, Interstate 694, and Highway 36 in the
   Twin Cities area
 • the conversion of a portion of Highway 252 in the Twin Cities area to a freeway
 • the widening of a portion of Interstate 94 in Wright and Stearns counties from four to six lanes
 • the conversion of portions of Highways 169 and 10 in Sherburne and Benton counties into freeways
 • the replacement of buses and other fleet vehicles within transit systems in 80 counties

“While the state has put the combination of federal and state funds to good use in the past, in the coming
years many additional needed projects will remain stranded on the drawing board because of insufficient
funding,” Will Wilkins, executive director of Trip, said in a statement. “It is critical that the state adequately
fund its transportation system and that Congress produces a timely and adequately funded federal sur-
face transportation program this year. Thousands of jobs and the state’s economy are riding on it.”

           The Panamera
            Okay, here’s the deal.

I was buying Porsche’s first four door sports car, called the Panamera. It wasn’t offi-
cially on sale until October 17 but I put my order in on September 15. Talk about over-eager.
 Promised build time was December.

Dealing with Porsche was easy. “Pay full list and work out your own financing.
Maybe take a second mortgage on the house or whatever “. Then wait your turn. I was hop-
ing to get mine maybe for Christmas. Now I know how my kids felt waiting for Santa. It seemed like an eternity.

Porsche’s no-dicker dealing was panty-waist stuff; dealing with my auto immune wife was not. “Sell all those
darned old cars!. That’s what you promised.” Marital tranquility was at stake. I did indeed make that heart wrench-
ing deal. No more blabbering about how they are old friends, not old cars. A deal is a deal. Sell them I will.

You can cash in. Want my last Porsche? Helluva deal. 928S bought new in ’85. Garnet red. Stick. Just
 22,000 rust-free, ding-free miles. Needs a new home.

Back to the Panamera, “my last Porsche.” My wife has been scoffing at those “last Porsche” promises since
1961. That’s when I bombed into our driveway with my first new Porsche, a spanking new 356B. Red. Ragtop. My
first real sports car after years of assorted junkers.

I raced it. Drove it like hell. This was the glorious, pre-arthritis, pre-new-knee era that I thought would go on
 forever. Caution was for wimps.

A parade of “last Porsches” followed. Mostly hot 911’s. Then it came time for my really “last Porsche”, the
Panamera. The long wait for delivery is eased by my fantasies about driving it. All-wheel drive, so snow be
damned. I’ll rumble up to traffic lights and rap those 400HP pipes. No drag racing, just sending a message that this
old “Carmudgeon” is still with it.

Secretly, I see it as a sports car for senior car nuts. Maybe I’m wrong. Porsche’s new CEO, Michael Macht,
says they’re selling like hotcakes. More than 4,000 at last report. That’s good news; I’ll not be alone on the road.

But Macht had some frightening news too. An electric Panamera! “We are taking the first step in this direc-
 tion….with the Panamera.”

Have they no sense of decency!

Reading the brochure on my Panamera, I was too busy drooling to catch the warning signs, as you hold the
brakes at traffic lights, the engine stops. That’s to save gas – and our planet – till you’re ready to go. Release the
brake and it automatically starts again. You feel good about yourself. You hope the guy next to you is a tree hugger
who will give you a thumb’s up.

Or you press a button that says “deactivate” this crazy system.

Unless you want to wait for the electric powered version, I urge you to put in your Panamera order now.
