  embryo after
  fertilization
• Enters the mother’s
  bloodstream
  – Targets corpus luteum
• HCG maintains
  secretory functions of
  corpus luteum
    HCG (Human Chorionic
      Gonadotrophin)
• Corpus luteum still secretes estrogen and
  progesterone
  – Endometrium is maintained
            Pregnancy Test
• Diagnostic kits test for HCG
• Can only be produced by the embryo
  – Therefore, it’s a positive indicator for pregnancy
