					Practice Exercise—Marks as words:
The combination of sensible properties of the marks and the
intelligible form that allow those marks to function as written signs
for a language reveals how the intimate relationship between
these elements become the formal structure of the work.

Using the shapes of the marks alone, translate these ideographs
(from a text in undeciphered Chinese ‘Bird Script’) into a text.

Note: Since this script has never been deciphered, your
                                   or
translation cannot be evaluated for accurate translation of the
writing’s meaning in its original context. However, as a
hermeneutic structure, it can be used as the basis of a new text.

    Buried seed reborn
    Grows toward the sky.

    Sounds pierce silence.
    Syncopated movements
    Enlighten.

    Caught in a maze,
    Rain. Opened Umbrella.

    Circles reach
    Enclosed conjunction
    Sacred space.

    Conjunction proposes
    unity.

    Small house,
    Growing Tree
    Home by the river.
