The model time management theory is thousands of years old. According to it, all matter in the universe comprises of four elements which are not only real but also symbolic. And when we engage all these four elements in out daily tasks we can actually strike a perfect harmony between time and work.
Let’s see how.
On basis of four elements, the ancient Greeks derived four respective tasks. Namely:
• Earth tasks
• Fire tasks
• Air tasks
• Water tasks
Earth tasks This is the basis on which everything else works. Earth is the connection between us and our needs and necessities. They include basic tasks like eating, sleeping, doing a routine job. More clearly, these are essential and boring and we cannot do without these.
Fire tasks
The element of fire represents a spark within us. Fire tasks include dynamic productive quality that each of us is bestowed with. It includes the inherent creative talent we allows us in developing new ideas, taking risks, working on that extra edge on innovation and whetting our creativity. Without fire tasks our life is repetitive, monotonous and the same vicious circle. This helps us excel in life and gaining that coveted niche in life.
Air tasks
The element of air symbolizes our inclination and ability to think and ponder. This is essentially a nondoing activity. Air tasks include pure thinking activity like planning analyzing, creative thinking when we are still in a relaxing mode. With air tasks the earth and fire tasks become more organized and effortless.
Water tasks Water symbolizes its ability to take the shape of the container and the fact that it may be still or violent, bubbly - calm - trickling, deep - shallow, destructive playful, has enormous symbolism attached to it. We can achieve nothing without others and we can achieve nothing because of others. So this water task is the balancing activity. It symbolizes striking the right chord with our colleagues, family and friends. This helps is doing all other tasks effortlessly.
According to the Greek methodology, we must spend one quarter of our day doing each of these tasks. The tasks help relief us from the monotony and sluggishness when the other tasks start to tire us.
