Introduction

Within Marine Digimap, there are two data download facilities. Charted Raster Download
and Hydrospatial Download allow you to download map data from Marine Digimap, for
use in GIS or graphics software. This guide demonstrates how to import these two types
of data to ArcGIS.
:

On completion of this guide, you will be able to:

 Import data downloaded from Marine Digimap to ArcGIS

 Apply a pre-defined style to the data

For guides that explain how to download data, go here:

http://edina.ac.uk/digimap/support/training/#marine

Download data
The data used in this guide is as follows:

     Hydrospatial data – 1 tile:

o All Topic Layers, tile NW25200040.

     Charted Raster data – 2 charts:

            o 3490-2 Port of Liverpool

o 3478-1 Continuation to Eastham Locks

In the instructions below, we assume you have saved the data to 2 folders, named:

                    Hydrospatial

                    Charted Raster

For step by step instructions on how to download this data, see these two EDINA
documents, available here:

     Hydrospatial Download

     Charted Raster Download

Install Style files

Before you import your data from Marine Digimap in ArcGIS you will need to install some
files on your computer.

You can download the files from the Help Pages of Marine Digimap.

The following instructions are for Windows:

If you do not need to carry out this process, go to the Import data section.

   1. Open the Marine Digimap Help pages.

1.1. Go to Using Data with GIS  Using Data with ArcMap. Here you will find the
files and instructions on how to use them.

1.2. Use the Right Click, Save As procedure to save both the fonts.zip and
            style.zip folders to your desktop.

1.3. Open My Computer from the Start menu and go to the Windows font folder:
C:\WINDOWS\Fonts. If you cannot access this folder then you do not have
administrator rights on your computer, contact IT support for more help.

1.4. Open the font.zip folder and select all the .ttf files. Copy these into the
            windows font folder.

Follow the next steps to install the ArcMap style file.

1.5. Open My Computer from the Start menu and go to the ESRI Styles folder:
C:\Program Files\ESRI\ArcMap\Styles. Note that on some computers the
ESRI folder may be in on a different hard drive such as D.

1.6. Open the style.zip folder and select the SeaZone Hydrospatial.style file. Copy
this into the ESRI Styles folder.

1.7. The preparation work is now complete and you can proceed with the rest of
            the exercise.

1.8. The downloaded data contains the information needed to open the files for
both MapInfo and ArcMap. There is no need to convert this data to view in
either GIS package. Once ArcMap has been opened it is a simple case of
            adding the downloaded .shp files.

Add Hydrospatial data

   1. Find ArcGIS on your computer and select ArcMap from the options.

   2. Click on the File menu and Select Add Data.

2.1. Select the Hydrospatial folder from the relevant location.

2.2. Select all the .shp files from the folder and then click Add to open them.

The files should open in a map similar to this:

Applying the SeaZone Style to Hydrospatial Data

The hydrospatial data will not look like the Marine Data you have seen in Marine Digimap,
as it has no style applied.

We installed the SeaZone Hydrospatial Style file earlier. We now need to use ArcMap’s
Style Manager tool to put the SeaZone Hydrospatial Style into the list of styles we use:

   3. Click on the Tools menu at the top of the screen.

3.1. Select the Style Manager tool from the Style heading.

3.2. Click on the Styles button on the left of the Style Manager screen and select
SeaZone Hydrospatial from the list. If it is not there then it has not been
            installed properly on your computer.

EDINA Digimap Training Sessions: Marine Digimap – Using data in ArcGIS

You can now start to apply the SeaZone Hydrospatial style to the layers on your map.

3.3. Right click on nw25200040_szNP_LAND_COVER_region in the table of
contents on the left and Select Properties.

3.4. Select the Symbology tab and click on Categories in the list on the left side
and then on Match to symbols in a style.

3.5. Set the Value Field to be SZFEATURE and the Match to Symbols in Style
should be set to SeaZone Hydrospatial style.

3.6. Now click Match Symbols at the bottom of the window to get the symbology
            for the layer.

3.7. To finish click Apply then click OK to close the window.

3.8. Use the same process above to add the style to the following layers:

            nw25200040_szSO_NAVIGATION_point
            nw25200040_szSE_TRANSPORTATION_polyline

This process can be repeated for nearly all the other layers in exactly the same way.
However the Protected Areas Theme and the Depth Areas theme need different
selections from the value list. For the Protected Areas layer select CATENV from the list,
for Depth Areas select SZFEATCODE.

It is not necessary to add the style to every layer but you can follow the same steps for
several more layers for practice. You should start to build a map that looks like the one
shown overleaf:

Add Charted Raster Data

The process of adding Charted Raster data is simpler than the process for the
Hydrospatial data.

It’s not necessary to install any extra files get the data to work.

   1. Start ArcMap. If you are already in ArcMap, click New in the File menu and create
      a new Blank Document.

1.1. Click on the File menu and Select Add Data.

1.2. Select the Charted Raster folder from the relevant folder.

1.3. Select the .tif files from the folder and then click Add to open them.

If this is the first time these tiff files have been opened ArcMap will ask if you want to build
Pyramids for them.

1.4. Click Yes when asked if you want to build pyramids, you will need to do this
            for each tiff file added.

The tiff files will open up and look like the following map:

EDINA Digimap Training Sessions: Marine Digimap – Using data in ArcGIS

   2. Use the Zoom and Pan tools to explore the maps.

Note there is a white gap between the maps. This is due to the way that ArcMap has
projected the maps.

As each map has its own projection there will be differences between them leading to
these thin gaps. EDINA has used different software to create the maps in Marine Maps
and so has reduced and eliminated many of these gaps.
