THIS IS JESUS!
March 28, 2010 am
Matthew 21:1-11 “As they approached Jerusalem and came to Bethphage on the
Mount of Olives, Jesus sent two disciples, 2saying to them, "Go to the village ahead
of you, and at once you will find a donkey tied there, with her colt by her. Untie
them and bring them to me. 3If anyone says anything to you, tell him that the Lord
needs them, and he will send them right away." 4This took place to fulfill what was
spoken through the prophet: 5"Say to the Daughter of Zion, 'See, your king comes
to you, gentle and riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'" 6The
disciples went and did as Jesus had instructed them. 7They brought the donkey and
the colt, placed their cloaks on them, and Jesus sat on them. 8A very large crowd
spread their cloaks on the road, while others cut branches from the trees and
spread them on the road. 9The crowds that went ahead of him and those that
followed shouted, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" "Blessed is he who comes in the
name of the Lord!" "Hosanna in the highest!" 10When Jesus entered Jerusalem, the
whole city was stirred and asked, "Who is this?" 11The crowds answered, "This is
Jesus, the prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."
➠ On this day a week before His crucifixion Jesus made His triumphant entry into
the city of Jerusalem.
➠ The people were rejoicing and crying “Hosanna! (Lord save us now) Blessed is he
who comes in the name of the Lord…”
➠ The crowd was rejoicing over all the miracles and mighty works they had seen
Jesus do in the last three and a half years or so that He had been ministering.
➠ Like His disciples they fully believed that Jesus was their “new King” the Messiah
who had come to set up His new kingdom and deliver them from their oppressors.
➠ But this was not to be the fulfillment of their dreams…
➠ Not everyone in the crowd that day understood who Jesus was and those who
knew He was the Messiah were confused about His mission in coming!
➠ So the question arose and they asked “who is this?”; “who is this man” who
comes riding on donkey and being hailed as though He were a conquering King?
➠ Who is this man who has the people so stirred up?
➠ Many others were able to answer “have you not heard” "…This is Jesus, the
prophet from Nazareth in Galilee."
➠ But this was not just another prophet… this was Jesus the Son of God… the
savior of the world… the Messiah!
➠ I want to take a closer look at Jesus triumphant entry into Jerusalem and answer
a few more questions about Jesus the prophet from Nazareth…
➠ Like: How He came and Why He came and What He came to do!
➠ Let the Spirit of the Lord minister to you today as we prepare our hearts for the
celebration of this coming Resurrection Sunday.
How did Jesus come?
1. Jesus Came in Meekness Riding on a Donkey!
➠ The Jews had been hoping and praying for their Messiah to come and deliver
them for hundreds of years. And Messiah came-but not in a king‟s palace-He was born in a barn and gre up in a
➠ Only they were looking for an earthly king who would once again sit on the
throne of David and rule them as in days gone by; a conqueror who would vanquish their foes
➠ However, Jesus came riding on a donkey… a donkey… not in a golden chariot
with a procession of priests and musicians preceding Him as He entered the city…
➠ Jesus came with no royal robes or a crown of Gold no Herald trumpets or
an army of soldiers marching before Him…
➠ Jesus came as the prophets foretold: 'See, your king comes to you, gentle and
riding on a donkey, on a colt, the foal of a donkey.'
➠ Aren’t we just a lot like those folks? When we are praying for an answer from
God, we have the tendency to expect Him to send Jesus in with a company of
warring angels to rescue us and “whup-up” on the devil a bit before He is done?
➠ We tend to have preconceived ideas of how God should take care of our needs
instead of trusting in Him and letting Him have His way with us.
➠ You see… Jesus wasn’t looking for an earthly throne or kingdom… He knew He
was here to redeem fallen mankind and return to heaven to get ready for us to
come and join Him there… He knew He would suffer and die and then be raised again from the dead…
➠ Jesus comes to you today my friend in meekness and yet in power to set you
free from everything that binds you to give you hope and strength so you can live
in fulfillment of your divine destiny in Him!
LET’S ANSWER ANOTHER QUESTION
Why did Jesus come?
2. Jesus Came In Mercy to Redeem Fallen Man!
➠ In Luke’s version of this event chapter 19:41-42 we find these words: Now 41
as He drew near, He saw the city and wept over it, 42 saying, “If you had known,
even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace! But now
they are hidden from your eyes.
➠ Once again as in several places in the scriptures we witness Jesus being moved
with compassion for people… in this instance His people the Jews.
➠ How often had the Father rescued these stubborn and rebellious people from
their oppressors only to have them reject Him time and time again?
➠ And now they were about to reject the Messiah they had been praying for so
➠ But that is the way the Mercy of God works!
➠ Though Jesus demonstrated His love and compassion and the love of the Father
to them through signs and wonders and miracles they would in one week be
crucifying Him as a common criminal… though He was an innocent man!
➠ God’s mercy is still so great friends …
➠ I picture Jesus looking at the world today as He is preparing to once again make
a “triumphant entry” and I picture Him weeping and thinking the same
thoughts as when He was about to ride into Jerusalem so long ago… “If you had
known, even you, especially in this your day, the things that make for your peace!
➠ But things are oh so different now… these things are not hidden… they are now
revealed and proclaimed all over the world… and millions have heard and witnessed
the saving mercy and grace of God…
➠ Yet there are still multiplied millions who have not heard and millions who
have heard and have not believed or accepted God’s gift of love and mercy…
➠ O may God’s great mercy move us as the “Redeemed of the Lord” to have a
greater sense of urgency about reaching the lost for Jesus!
➠ There is coming a time when God’s mercy will end!
➠ When it does there will be no “second chances” and those who have rejected
God’s mercy will never know His saving grace and be eternally lost and
condemned to spend eternity in a devil’s hell.
➠ Friends… make every effort to reach your lost loved ones and friends!
➠ It will be better if you risk losing their friendship in this life than to have their
blood on your hands for never telling them of God’s mercy and love and their need
for salvation! FINALLY:
What did Jesus come to do?
3. Jesus Came on a Mission to Reconcile Man to God!
➠ Let’s see what happened after Jesus entered Jerusalem…
➠ Matt 21:12-13 12 Then Jesus went into the temple of God and drove out all
those who bought and sold in the temple, and overturned the tables of the money
changers and the seats of those who sold doves. 13 And He said to them, “It is
written, „My house shall be called a house of prayer,‟ but you have made it a „den of
➠ Jesus wasn’t just being a “religious bigot or bully”… He was angry that these
people had forsaken the temple as a “Place of Prayer”.
➠ Tradition and greed had separated the Jews from God… they no longer lived in
awe of God.
➠ The temple had become a “market place” and worship had become a mere ritual.
➠ Jesus was on a mission to repair and restore the relationship between
God and man and bring God’s people to their “senses” concerning prayer
and true worship.
➠ I am concerned that there is a similar condition that exists in the churches of
➠ There is a great need in the church my friends for God’s people to be restored to
more intimate relationship and fellowship with Him in prayer and in faith and
➠ How is it that we can sit for hours in front of the T.V. watching a game or a
movie but we can’t stand to watch and pray for an hour or even stay past noon on
➠ We need a spiritual renewal and restoration in the church!
➠ We have become “desensitized” in large part to the moving and stirring of the
Spirit of God!
➠ God, please help us to “reprioritize” our lives and “re-establish” a vibrant
prayer life and give us an unquenchable thirst for the “flow of your Spirit” in our
lives and an insatiable hunger for Your Word!
➠ Please hear my heart today friends… Jesus is coming again very soon! Sooner
that we can truly imagine! And if we are ready to go we will be caught up together
with Him in the clouds!
➠ But then He’s coming to earth again and He will make another triumphant
➠ Only when He comes this time He isn’t coming on a donkey! He’s coming as John
describes Him in Rev 19:11-16 “Now I saw heaven opened, and behold, a white horse.
And He who sat on him was called Faithful and True, and in righteousness He judges and
makes war. 12 His eyes were like a flame of fire, and on His head were many crowns. He
had a name written that no one knew except Himself. 13 He was clothed with a robe dipped
in blood, and His name is called The Word of God. 14 And the armies in heaven, clothed in
fine linen, white and clean, followed Him on white horses. 15 Now out of His mouth goes a
sharp sword, that with it He should strike the nations. And He Himself will rule them with a
rod of iron. He Himself treads the winepress of the fierceness and wrath of Almighty God. 16
And He has on His robe and on His thigh a name written: KING OF KINGS AND LORD OF
➠ When you hear the news and see what is going on in our government and in the
world abroad it is very evident that things are shaping up for a dramatic change in
our way of life here in America!
➠ As God’s people we are still free to rejoice on Palm Sunday and celebrate the
Resurrection on Easter Sunday!
➠ We must take advantage of the time we have left to prepare ourselves and to
reach the lost with the Gospel!
➠ Jesus said: “I must work the works of Him who sent Me while it is day; the night
is coming when no one can work.” John 9:4
➠ I must ask you today friend… are you ready to meet Jesus? Have your made Him
King of Kings and Lord of Lords in your heart?
➠ Time is short and there are no guarantees of a tomorrow for any of us… will you
say yes to Jesus today and let Him come into your heat and be your savior?
➠ And if Jesus is your savior already… are you living it “out loud” for all to see?
