                                 OFF TO A GREAT START!

Our first meeting was a great success! We welcomed several new members and got some
of our previous members back with us. We look forward to growing this year with new
members as well as our current members and members who may have lost touch with our group.

We are progressing with the web page and hope to be up and going before the end of the
year. Our Newsletter is improving and as you can see we are working on making the newsletter
entertaining, educational and informative. We welcome your input and articles for publication.

We are proud to present our first Judicial Profile in this edition of our newsletter and we
thank Judge Ellen Venzer for volunteering to be our first subject. We hope to introduce all of the
Judiciary of the South Dade Justice Center and Coral Gables Courthouse to you throughout this
year. It is our intention to give you some insight into the workings of each judicial chamber to
assist you and the judges in making things flow smoothly.

We have several excellent speakers lined up this year including Chief Judge Farina, Miles
McGrane (President of the Florida Bar) and other speakers who will provide our members with
CLE credits for their presentation. We are working diligently on obtaining CLE credits for our
lunch meetings and to build up a library of CLE tapes for our members.

I look forward to continuing to serve our group and remain available to discuss any issue
regarding the South Miami Kendall Bar Association. Please feel free to contact me at 305/662-
6178 or email me at mpanter@panterlaw.com.

                               JUDGE ELLEN SUE VENZER

The South Miami Kendall Bar is pleased and proud to introduce you to Judge Ellen Sue
Venzer. Judge Venzer is presently serving our community as a County Judge at the South Dade
Justice Center located at 10710 S.W. 211th Street. Judge Venzer’s Judicial Assistant is Adys
Pena and her Bailiff is Manny Perez. Judge Venzer can be reached at (305) 252-5858, her
telefax number is (305) 971-5094 and her email address is evenzer@jud11.flcourts.org.

Judge Venzer is the proud mother of two four year old children. She enjoys sailing and
raising orchids. She is a graduate of the University of Miami where she earned a Bachelor of
Business Administration Degree in 1984 and continued on at the University of Miami School of
Law graduating with a Juris Doctorate Degree in 1987.

Judge Venzer was elected to the County Court in 1995 without opposition and reelected
again in 1999 without opposition. Judge Venzer has had her name submitted to Governor Bush
two times for open Circuit Court seats.

Judge Venzer was featured on CNN for her Courtroom in the Classroom’s project which
brings DUI cases into local schools to educate students on the real life consequences of drinking
and driving.

Judge Venzer has Motion Calendar on Mondays and Wednesdays starting promptly at
9:30 a.m. Jury Trials are held on a 4 day calendar each month which varies. Non Jury Trials are
scheduled every day except Thursdays. On Tuesdays, Judge Venzer handles Domestic Violence
cases and on Thursdays she handles Traffic and Misdemeanor cases.

Judge Venzer promises to sing at this year’s Judicial Reception. She has been a friend of
the South Miami Kendall Bar Association in the past and vows to continue to participate in our
group activities to assist in the relationship between the bench and bar.
                                   Ramblings from the Yenta

The Yenta hopes you did not miss this year’s opening luncheon at Fleming’s. It was well attended and
there were, indeed, a lot of introductions, commendations, and announcements of the year’s upcoming
events. David Weisman got a little rowdy but he was excited about his wife’s honorary award for all her
hard work. The Yenta was impressed with the number and variety of activities planned this year such as a
first time collaboration with the Coral Gables Bar Association on the Annual Judicial Reception.

With everything going on in the world, being a lawyer is one of those stressful occupations. It
was a pleasure to hear from our speaker Patrick Wiggins and his suggestions regarding reduction of stress
in the practice of law—not to mention the CLE credits that the Yenta was pre-occupied with to meet her
reporting deadline. We learned from Mr. Wiggins that association in organizations such as ours could
reduce the stress of practicing law in a big city like Miami.

Finally, I hope none of you missed David Letterman’s Top Ten Reasons Why South Miami-
Kendall Bar Association Lawyers Go to Court? Well, in case you did, here they are:

        10. To practice getting up at 6:00 a.m. in the morning.
          9. For an opportunity to see those recent law school graduates in their tight pant suits.
         8. To seek out judges as guest speakers for the SMKBA luncheons.
         7. To use the plush bathroom facilities on the 3rd floor of the Court House at 73 West Flagler
                Street.
         6. To search for Saddam Hussein and Bin Laden who have frequently been spotted amongst
                the crowds downtown.
         5. To enjoy the scenery along U.S. 1 while riding the Metrorail.
         4. To make a golf date with one of the 2500 other attorneys in the South Dade area.
         3. To hear little known and unusual interpretations of the law.
        2. To move to withdraw as counsel.

And the Number 1 reason why South Miami-Kendall Bar Association attorneys go to court:
         1. In preparation for the annual SMKBA banquet, to listen to Judge Stan Blake singing to the
            Defendants and vice versa.

                                                  Respectfully submitted,
                                                  The Yenta
.
