WorldChicago Our Role in Facilitating International Education Opportunities for Youth Our Mission By acting as the liaison between Chicagoans and international visitors from around the world, WorldChicago promotes international understanding, appreciation for other cultures, mutual respect, and communication. Programs that Involve Chicago Youth INBOUND PROFESSIONAL PROGRAMS Adult Visitors from Abroad (IVLP, Community Connections, Open World) YOUTH LEADERSHIP PROGRAMS Inbound programs - international youth in Chicago Hybrid domestic programs - Chicago and international youth Outbound programs - Chicago youth abroad Inbound Professional Programs - Adult Visitors from Abroad Educators and leaders in field of education - visit schools, academic institutions – engage in professional exchange with local educators Professionals in various fields – give presentations in schools about their country and their profession Youth Leadership Programs Funding: US Dept of State, Bureau of Ed & Cultural Affairs, private Approx. 1,275 students & teachers per year Components: Overarching Goals: Community leader Leadership development meetings Workshops Diversity Service activities Civic Activism Service Social & cultural Mutual School visits Understanding Homestays Follow-on projects Inbound Programs - International Youth in Chicago 2009: delegations from Denmark, UK, Belgium, Iraq, & Serbia 2010: delegations from Iraq, UK, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, and Serbia Interact with local students in variety of ways Live with homestay families who have students in high school Visits to schools /shadow students Participate in Dreams for Kids workshops and Cultural Kitchen at International Hostel with local student groups Volunteer in after school or extra-curricular programs with elementary students Hybrid Domestic Programs (in Chicago, DC, Denver, and Vermont) - Chicago and international youth US – Iraqi Young Leaders Program 2008: 2010: 4 students from 6 students from Chicago (Payton, Wendell Phillips, Chicago (Lincoln Park, Gary Michele Clark) Comer Charter, Regina Vermont, Denver, DC Dominican, Foreman HS) – Turkish & German students went to Vermont, Denver, 2009: DC for 4 week exchange 2 students from Chicago (Michele Clark & Pritzker College Prep – Noble) leadership program in Vermont participated in Chicago Iraq program Outbound Programs - Chicago Youth Abroad Youth Leadership Exchange to Serbia March 19 - April 3, 2010 4 students from Chicago 1 from Northside College Prep; 2 from Daniel Hale Williams Prep; 1 from Stevenson High School Students from other US regions Travel to Serbia (free of charge!!) Funded by U.S. State Dept 2011 program to Serbia Ways for Chicago Students & Teachers to Get Involved Be a homestay host - homestay brothers and sisters often participate in the events and activities with the international guests Be a day host Host a professional delegation to give a presentation to your class Try to get your school engaged and solicit for shadow days Sign up to receive emails from WorldChicago about current opportunities Apply for exchange program opportunities – being actively involved in the hosting activities provides you with the knowledge and contacts for knowing about the exchange opportunities Homestay Hosting Opportunities 2010 November 2 -15, 2010 ~ Serbia Youth Leadership Program ~ 9 Youths, ages 15-18, and 2 Chaperones IMMEDIATE NEED FOR HOSTS!!
