Points Your Points

35 1. TOMBSTONE RESEARCH. Research the following 10 facts _____
about a famous German-speaking person who is no longer
living. You may include additional accomplishments if you
cannot find some of this information.

          EXAMPLE

           1. Full Name: Stuart George Washington
           2. Father’s Name: Augustine Washington
           3. Mother’s Name: Mary Ball Washington
           4. Date Born: February 22, 1732
           5. Date Died: December 14, 1799

           6. Where born: Westmoreland County, VA
           7. Where died or Mount Vernon, VA
              buried:
           8. Occupation: Surveyor
           9. A Contemporary: Benjamin Franklin
          10. Accomplishment: First President of the United States

20 2. TOMBSTONE CONSTRUCTION. Quality of construction: The tombstone _____
must be three dimensional (it must stand up - a cereal box is
ideal). It should be about 9” x 12”. It must display a picture
of the person on the tombstone (a photocopy is fine).
          Neatness counts!

25 3. TOMBSTONE INSCRIPTION. The tombstone must contain this _____
information, all on one side with the picture:
          a) Name of the person; their date of birth & death - in German,
             it would be
geboren am 22. Februar 1732 gestorben am 14. Dezember 1799
          b) A minimum of five complete sentences (in English) which
include the researched information. (Do not simply put your
             10 facts on the tombstone.)

  10 4. TOMBSTONE QUESTION. Write a question in English on a _____
3” x 5” card which can be answered by reading the tombstone
you prepared. The question must be based on the information
          in item 1 above.

10 5. TOMBSTONE DEADLINE. Turned in on time. _____

This project is due on __________________________________.

For each class, I made up a list of the people the students in that class had chosen.

They used this list to record their answers to the questions on the 3” x 5” cards as
they walked around and read the tombstones.

After students have walked around and read all the tombstones, they sit with their tombstone and I
hand out the category sheet below. One by one, they stand up and present the person and give a
short summary of why they were important.

I then ask them to categorize the person and point out that some people can fit into more than one
category. I ask them to choose only one and that is where we all put that person.

I follow this up with a crossword puzzle (which I've prepared ahead of time) for homework and, a
few days later, a matching test on the people and why they were famous as well as a section
putting them into the proper category.
