Developing a Proposal
Writing an Abstract
Developing Objectives
Program Evaluation
Budgeting
Helpful Hints

Central Virginia Affiliate
Planning the Proposal

•Read everything!
•Consider the funding priorities carefully and how your projects “fits”
•Discuss ideas with decision-makers in your organization.
•Explore opportunities for collaboration.
•Prepare proposal together.

Central Virginia Affiliate
Proposal Abstract

•First impressions are important.
•Brief statement of your “case” and a summary of your proposal.
•Be concise!
•Do not exceed 1200 characters (about 200 words).
•Use language that the reviewer will understand
•Final abstract should be written last

Central Virginia Affiliate
Abstract

Purpose of the program
Description of key activities
Summary of evaluation methods
Likely impact of the program.

Central Virginia Affiliate
Abstract Activity

Central Virginia Affiliate
Statement of Need

Be specific — use local data when available

3 components

    Facts and statistics

How your program can make a difference

Uniqueness of your program — why you?

Central Virginia Affiliate
Statement of Need: Example

Providing mammography for women in our rural community is important because
unemployment is currently high and mammography rates are low among
underserved women. Our project will be one of the few to provide mammography to
women for this population.

Central Virginia Affiliate
Writing Objectives

        Specific

        Measurable

        Achievable

        Realistic

        Time-framed

Central Virginia Affiliate
Writing Objectives

If you have more than five objectives, consider breaking them up under two or three
general goals.

Be realistic.

Who, What, By when, How much???

Central Virginia Affiliate
Writing Objectives: Examples

Objectives for the proposed project are:

To serve 40 newly diagnosed women with breast cancer, in treatment,
        through home visits.

To provide mammography screening for 75 women who are “high risk”.

To educate 300 women on breast cancer risk factors through sessions at
        community centers.

Central Virginia Affiliate
Writing Objectives Activity

Central Virginia Affiliate
Process Evaluation

•What is happening?
•How is it happening?
•How much?
•Where?
•To whom?

Central Virginia Affiliate
Impact Evaluation

Changes in:
    • Behavior
    • Knowledge
    • Attitudes
    • Beliefs

Change among
    • Individuals
    • Providers
    • Organizations
    • Communities

Central Virginia Affiliate
Budget & Expenses

Projects become reality because the central idea is sold, not because the proposal
is cheap!

Be realistic! Ask for what you need.

Justify expenses. Do your costs follow with narrative program description?
