International Human Rights Training Program
The International Human Rights Training Program (IHRTP) is at the heart of Equitas activities. Now in its
30th year, this annual three-week training session brings together approximately 120 participants from
over 50 countries. The IHRTP provides a unique opportunity for human rights workers to deepen their
understanding of human rights and of the essential role of human rights education in effecting change.
The IHRTP is primarily designed for non-profit, non-governmental human rights organizations (NGOs) or
community-based organizations (CBOs). However, a limited number of participants also come from
national human rights institutions, government departments and educational institutions.
Goal and objectives
Building a Global Culture of Human Rights
The IHRTP focuses on strengthening the capacity of human rights
organizations to undertake human rights education (HRE) activities (e.g.,
training, awareness campaigns, information dissemination, and
advocacy) aimed at building a global culture of human rights. For
Equitas, HRE is a process of transformation that begins with the
individual and branches out to encompass the society at large. After the
program, these participants and their organizations are better equipped
to educate people on human rights.
The Participants
Organizations which nominate candidates for the IHRTP have demonstrated commitment to the
protection and promotion of human rights and have an established record of effective action. These
organizations are committed to providing opportunities to apply the knowledge and skills gained by the
candidate in human rights education activities such as training sessions, workshops, public awareness
campaigns, advocacy and monitoring.
Participants are courageous and dynamic individuals who influence the human rights education work of
their organizations. Their dedication makes it possible to effectively transfer the knowledge and skills
gained to colleagues and to others in their countries. Upon returning from the IHRTP, they bring back to
their communities new tools and methodologies to better challenge entrenched attitudes and practices,
often in dangerous situations.
The program helps human rights activists build confidence and allows them to network with other
participants to help them overcome obstacles.
IHRTP Gets Results
The results from the IHRTP evaluations of the last five years are a clear indication that the program focus
is achieving the desired results. An independent evaluation of the surveyed past participants found that:
“(…there were noticeable effects on individuals consulted here, including strong evidence of increased
individual competency…Overall, alumni reported that their knowledge and skills related to human rights
and HRE have increased as a result of their participation in their IHRTP course”.
Their conclusions were supported by figures from their survey of alumni, where 96% of alumni agreed or
strongly agreed that they gained new or improved adult-learning skills. 95% felt their understanding of
human rights concepts and principles had increased.
