         Online Exam!
Registration and exam available online at www.adsp.org in August, 2009.

This program is concerned with the quality of diagnoses made by the dermatopathologist. Participants
will review the 20 cases and choose the multiple choice answer that best represents their diagnosis. Upon
submission of the completed exam, participants will receive immediate results including the correct case
answer with discussion and references. A CME certificate will be issued to those who satisfactorily
complete this program and submit a course evaluation. Scores are kept confidential.

Exam Availability
The diagnostic quality assurance exam will be administered online only beginning in August, 2009.
Check the ASDP Web site (www.asdp.org) – click on the CME Programs tab to register for the exam.
The online diagnostic quality assurance exams are available for credit for a two-year period after
publication and provide immediate results and confirmation of credit earned. Specific termination
dates will be posted with each exam.

Accredition Information
The American Society of Dermatopathology is accredited by the Accreditation Council for
Continuing Medical Education to provide continuing medical education for physicians. The
American Society of Dermatopathology designates each diagnostic quality assurance exam for a
maximum of 4 AMA PRA Category 1 Credits™. Physicians should only claim credit commensurate
with the extent of their participation in the activity.

Upon completion of this program, participants should be able to:
• Describe the power of routine H&E in identifying key diagnostic histopathologic features as
they relate to both inflammatory and neoplastic conditions.

• Confirm the significance of special stains and immunohistochemistry in complementing H&E
findings in dermatopathology.

• Understand proper application of immunohistochemical techniques as they relate to
dermatopathology in regards to their advantages and drawbacks.

• Appreciate the nuances, discern the subtleties and comprehend the caveats of entities
commonly encountered in dermatopathology.

• Appreciate uncommon presentations of common entities and common presentations of
uncommon entities.

Who should participate in the diagnostic quality assurance program?

This program is concerned with the quality of indirect immunofluorescence tesing of sera for
detection of circulating IgG anti-basement membrane zone and anti-intercellular (cell surface)
antibodies. The participating physician receives five serum samples and is requested to process
these to determine the presence of and titer of circulating antibodies using an indirect
immunofluorescence technique with monkey esophagus as a substrate and other substrates if
desired. The participant records the results including pattern and the titer. Each participant
will return the recorded results to Beutner Labs, Inc. The results of all laboratories in the same
testing event will be number coded, compiled and summarized for quality review. Beutner
Labs, Inc. provides this service in cooperation with the Department of Microbiology an
Immunology of the University at Buffalo, School of Medicine and Biomedical Sciences,
SUNY. Following completion of tests of specimens from Beutner Labs, Inc. participants
receive number coded summaries of the results of all participants. A certificate is issued to each
laboratory participating in the program.

Testing is open to laboratory directors.

The dermatopathology laboratory director receives tissue specimens, which he/she must process in
his/her laboratory according to specific techniques. The microscopic slides are then sent to the
Director of the Lab Proficiency Program. The Director assesses the technical quality of the work
performed and informs the laboratory director of deficiencies. A certificate is issued to the laboratory
if the work is satisfactory.
