					A battery's life and performance are only as good as its electrode materials. Material
characterization instruments prove that particle size and shape do matter.
Personal electronic devices, electric vehicles, and military and aerospace applications
continue to drive the demand for lightweight, powerful batteries that deliver better performance
for longer time periods. To stay competitive, battery developers use image analysis and
particle sizing by laser diffraction to characterize materials vital to battery performance.

Researchers can discover the fundamental links between parameters and final product
performance by gathering data that describes the size, shape, and distribution of particles in
materials for positive and negative electrodes.

The energy storage capacity of a battery depends on the volume of electrolyte contained
within the cell. There must be a balance between the space occupied by the electrodes and
electrolyte volume. Reducing the particle size of the electrode material will increase the
specific surface area; however, it will also affect the size of the voids between the electrode
particles, causing a reduction in the overall electrolyte volume and the battery capacity.

If battery size is a priority, developers can realize improvements in the recharging-discharging
characteristics of batteries through better osmosis and permeation of the electrolyte relative to
the void structure by adjusting the shape of fine particles in a coating film.

Porous material and coating films built from fine particles, a few micrometers in diameter, are
used in electromagnetic materials, as well as drugs, chemical tablets, and ceramics. To
achieve advanced functionality, higher quality, and more sophisticated processing of fine
particulate materials, particle optimization has evolved to include complementary data based
on particle shape and particle size distribution. Additional studies using advanced imaging
technology deliver data on particle shape.

Size effects on particle packing
For a given chemistry and cell size, the particle size distribution of electrode materials can be
tuned to optimize the battery energy and power. To achieve high energy storage, the volume
of the electrolyte must be maximized. When it comes to delivering high power the surface area
of the electrode is more important. Therefore, a battery developer must be able to quickly and
easily measure the particle size distribution of the electrode materials.

The overall surface area exposed to the electrolyte can be increased by reducing the size of
particles in an electrode material. However, the size of inter-particulate voids will also be
affected. Smaller particles pack more tightly, causing a reduction in the volume of electrolyte
that can be held in the spaces in between them and, consequently, a reduction in the overall
battery capacity. If the particles become even smaller, the inter-particulate voids can become
so tight that contact between the electrolyte and electrode becomes restricted rather than
expanded, hindering ionic mobility.
To balance the advantages and disadvantages
of fine particles, coarse particles can be
introduced to the electrode composition to
control the overall packing fraction and preserve
contact between the electrolyte and electrodes
(Sato, Journal of Power Sources, 1998; Choi, et
al, Journal of Power Sources, 2006).

During the production of alkaline batteries,
where the cathode is compressed into shape,
particle size and distribution of the material will
also affect tap density and ease of processing.
Particle size characteristics and behaviors also
can deliver insight into the control and
management of unwanted agglomeration.

Analyzing size distribution
Laser diffraction instruments identify the particle
size distributions of electrode materials in
batteries, measuring a mixture of nanometer-
and micrometer-sized materials in a single

Laser diffraction instruments that offer a dynamic
range of 0.02 µm to 2000 µm using a single lens, such as the Mastersizer 2000 (Malvern
Instruments, Malvern, U.K.), enable comparison of particle size distributions across different
material compositions for any battery type.

Figure 1 presents the measurement results of three grades of electrolytic manganese dioxide
(EMD). Each sample showed a mixture of coarse material, approximately 30 µm in size, and
fine particles, about 150 nm in size. The three grades show an increase in size of the main
mode of the distribution, which occurs at 29 µm, 37.4 µm, and 53.13 µm for samples EMD 1, 2,
and 3 respectively. As the main mode increases, the surface area decreases. This will be
counterbalanced by the presence of the fine particles, which contribute more to the surface
area and therefore help to maintain the power output.

The size of the main mode determines the size of battery in which the material can be used.
When volume is not at a premium, electrode materials with a larger particle size can be used,
as the space into which the electrode must fit is less restricted. Larger battery sizes not only
deliver advantages in terms of electrolyte volume and ionic mobility, but require less
processing of the cathode materials. EMD 1 could be used in a size AA or AAA battery; EMD 2
and 3 could be used in larger C or D size batteries to aid with increased capacity.
Shape effects on particle packing
Researchers at Hokkaido University, Sapporo, Japan, studied the effects of particle shape
on the packing structure of an electrode material, demonstrating that final product quality and
performance can be controlled by using appropriately shaped particles.

To produce anode coatings, the raw carbon material, typically in the form of flakes, is
processed into more spherical particles. In a study, researchers prepared, tested, and
compared two samples using Malvern's Sysmex Flow Particle Image Analyzer (FPIA-3000).
One sample was processed using a batch-type shape adjustment mechanism operating on
rotational impact and shear-compression force, combined with high-speed dispersion and
mixing (Figure 2a). The other batch was not processed (Figure 2b).

The samples were dispersed in liquid before introduction into the instrument. A sheath flow
mechanism forced the sample into a planar flow where it was illuminated and captured on
camera. The contour coordinates of each individual particle were used to calculate size
distributions and shape data.

The results, presented as circular equivalent diameter (CED) and
circularity in Table 1, show that the untreated sample contained a higher
percentage of larger particles (>3 µm) and presented a lower overall
circularity than the treated sample. These results indicate that treating
the material with a high-speed dispersion machine reduces the amount of
non-circular agglomerated particles present.
Other studies have determined that the more spherical the particles within
a material, the better permeation of fluid that material will deliver.
In addition, the use of spherical conglobulated particles in a negative
electrode material promotes the permeation of electrolyte through the
film, which results in improved recharging-discharging performance in a
secondary battery, particularly as thickness increases.

Before Declaring Device Convergence King, Consider Battery Life

It is not like I didn‘t see this coming, but when Cisco announced its decision to shut down its
recently-acquired Flip portable camera division (which actually wasn‘t doing too badly, but was
only experiencing slower growth than expected) yesterday, I couldn‘t help feeling that it was
somewhat premature. It was actually my healthy stock of Apple devices and iOS apps that led
me to feel this way.

It appears as if the analyst are convinced that convergence is king, and smartphones are the
future. Looking at Apple, it appears as if this trend is being realized as their once miraculous
army of hundreds of millions of iPods has quickly transitioned into their now better equipped
army of one-hundred million iPhones. With internet connectivity, GPS, camera, video, music
and voice, it certainly is the very model of convergence. But the developer in me sees the very
concrete issue of Jvc GR-DVP9 Battery life becoming more of a concern with each and every
feature being added into apps. Making every app in the App Store socially-connected and
location-aware is making getting through the day without reaching for my external backup
Samsung VP-D20Battery iPhone charger more and more difficult.

So while analysts continue to convince investors that standalone, single purpose consumer
electronic devices are not the way to go, I can‘t help but think that this will only add to the
number of additional chargers I will need to carry around on my technology utility belt. If I will
have to carry around an additional piece of tech anyway, why not have it serve a dedicated
purpose? Maybe I‘m old-fashioned, but I still carry around my GPS Data Logger, iPod nano,
Flip Video Camera, iPhone 4 and JustMobile Gum charger. Perhaps if Cisco made its Flip
video camera a smartphone charger as well, it would have a place in this future dominated by
convergence.

Blackmagic Design Announces ATEM Camera Converter

Blackmagic Design has announced ATEM Camera Converter, a new type of converter that
allows consumer HDMI cameras or professional SDI cameras to use optical fiber for low cost
connection to live production switchers up to 25 miles away. ATEM Camera Converter lets
customers get more cameras closer to the live action at much lower cost.

ATEM Camera Converter also includes talkback, external microphone input, program return
feed, on-air tally and a built in Canon LP-E8 battery power source for only $595.

ATEM Camera Converter will be demonstrated on the Blackmagic Design NAB 2011 booth at
#SL220.

ATEM Camera Converter is a complete solution for converting cameras to optical fiber for live
production. Its low cost means it can even allow low end live productions to get the advantage
of optical fiber for long camera distances away from the switcher, and closer to the action.

A consumer or professional camera can be connected to the HDMI or SDI inputs for
conversion to optical fiber, and if the program feed is connected back via the optical fiber, the
ATEM Camera Converter's HDMI and SDI outputs can be used for local camera or switcher
program monitoring. Professional local microphone inputs are included for high quality audio
from the camera location. ATEM Camera Converter also includes an internal Canon NB-5L
Charger for remote use when your cameras are located far away from power sources, and
built in talkback and tally.

Previously placing cameras in live events required expensive cables and was limited to the
most high end broadcast productions only. With ATEM Camera Converter, now more people
can afford to place cameras long distances from the switcher, so events not normally covered

embedding the microphone audio into channels 15 and 16 of the camera optical fiber video

To assist camera operators to see when they are "on air", ATEM Camera Converter uses an
open standard tally packet in the SDI output on any ATEM switcher to illuminate two built in
tally LEDs. All that is required is to connect the ATEM switcher's program output to the ATEM
Camera Converter via the return optical fiber feed. Then select the camera number via USB
software or using the camera number button on the keypad. If there is an external monitor
plugged into the HDMI or SDI outputs, then a red tally border can be displayed on the monitor!

ATEM Camera Converter is designed for portable operation and includes a long duration
Canon NB-5L Charger built in, so it can be used far away from power, or when moving
around. With an integrated belt clip, it can be snapped onto a belt, for easy movement with the
camera operator. If the customer is using a tripod, then it's easy to strap ATEM Camera
Converter onto the tripod beside the camera.

HP Unveils Mobile Workstation Portfolio for Ultimate
Performance, Design and Durability

Las Vegas – HP today announced a new lineup of powerful mobile workstations, ideal for
engineering, power-computing and content-creation customers who need the performance of

HP also unveiled the HP Z210 Workstation, demonstrating its continued investment in the

Cape Town - Success in battery innovation would be in reducing costs and weight to increase
performance, an expert has said.
"The next big thing is to successfully reduce the cost in batteries and a reduction in the amount of
time to charge," CSIR manager of the energy and processes and conference chair Dr Mkulu Mathe

New technologies being investigated could significantly reduce charging time by using innovative
solutions.

This would require short "refuel" periods very similar to current systems but needs the infrastructure
to be in place to make it attractive for consumers.


"We're also thinking toward the use of nano materials which would have the benefit of reducing
waste. There's a huge effort toward the recycling of waste," Mathe said.


Experts could not agree on whether there would be a single factor that would drive consumers from
petrol- to battery-powered vehicles.


"I think it will be gradual, but it's difficult to tell," said Visco. "If the pain is hard enough, people will
switch."


"Yes, the price of fuel goes up, but people in the United States keep thinking it will go down," said
Whittingham.


Cutting edge


SA has, through the CSIR, demonstrated capability to be on the cutting edge of research, said
Mathe, but the country needed to invest in education.


"The fact that these people have come from all over the world shows that there is awareness of the

Want to get the longest performance out of your laptop battery? Use these tips from Sue

T-Mobile G2x Review
T-Mobile and LG haven’t just been working on a tablet: there’s also a dual-core smartphone on
offer as well. The T-Mobile G2x doesn’t bother with the docking accessories of AT&T’s ATRIX
4G (review), instead expecting its own dual-core potential to stand on its own feet. Is this the best
of a new breed of Android devices, or just a fast phone that still falls short? Check out the full

Hardware
Long and lean is a good way to describe the G2x. Like its European LG Optimus 2X counterpart,
it measures in at 4.88 x 2.48 x 0.43 inches and 5oz, fronted with a 4-inch WVGA TFT LCD
touchscreen. The entire fascia is flush-fitting Gorilla Glass, though it does have a somewhat
oversized capacitive button area at the bottom – with the usual menu, home, back and search keys
– which could do with being smaller. Above the display is a 1.3-megapixel front camera while an
8-megapixel camera with autofocus and an LED flash are on the back.

While at first glance the camera battery cover looks like, as with the T-Mobile G-Slate by LG,
there’s a flip-out kickstand, in actual fact the silver strip is merely decorative. It leads up to a
protruding camera bump and bears the ―with Google‖ legend that lets you know LG and T-Mobile
have held off from tampering with the OS. Around the edges there are volume keys, a microUSB
port and twin speaker grilles on the bottom, and a headphone jack and power/standby button on
the top. You also get a micro HDMI port for hooking the G2x up to a TV and playing back the
1080p Full HD video Tegra 2 is capable of churning through.

Inside there’s quadband GSM and quadband HSPA+ 4G, along with WiFi b/g/n, Bluetooth
2.1+EDR and GPS.

512MB of RAM and 8GB of internal storage are joined by a microSD card slot under the canon
camera battery cover (though not under the sony camera battery itself). The usual arrays of sensors
– accelerometer, ambient light, gyroscope, digital compass and proximity – are included.




Build construction is solid, though the G2x feels overly long in the hand. Audio quality is high
from the dual speakers, while the touchscreen responds swiftly and the capacitive buttons don’t
require the occasional double-taps we’ve experienced on some Android devices. We can’t help but
miss the ATRIX 4G’s qHD resolution display, however, with its extra pixels.

Software and Performance
As we mentioned before, LG and T-Mobile have left the software alone, and put Android 2.2
Froyo in its untampered state on the handset. The lack of modification is something we invariably
welcome, as it generally means faster updates later in the handset’s lifecycle, but not launching the
G2x with the latest Android 2.3 Gingerbread is a blip on LG’s spec sheet. A Gingerbread upgrade
is tipped for later on in Q2 2011, though no definitive timescale has been confirmed.

What you do get are some preloaded apps, including a demo of N.O.V.A. Near Orbit Vanguard
Alliance HD and a full copy of Need for Speed SHIFT. There’s also NVIDIA Tegra Zone, for
highlighting the latest and greatest software designed to run best with the 1GHz dual-core chip,
T-Mobile TV (which, as on the G-Slate, won’t output via the HDMI port), the Zinio magazine app
and Qik for two-way video calls. Considering Google is yet to release its own video-calling app
for smartphones, that’s a sensible inclusion.

Performance from the Tegra 2 processor varies depending on which benchmarking tool you
attempt to measure it with, particularly because many of them are yet to be updated to properly
handle dual-core CPUs. Quadrant scored almost 2670, while Linpack spat out a result of 36.576
MFLOPS in 2.20s.

Real-world, and the T-Mobile G2x handled just about everything we asked of it. 1080p HD video
played back on an external display was smooth and artifact-free, while games were responsive and
showed no lag or glitches. The OS as a whole flicks past with no pauses or hiccups whatsoever.

Camera
As you might expect, the front-facing camera on the G2x is really only fit for video calls and, if
pressed, the occasional vanity shot. Video and stills are blurry and demand plenty of light if
they’re to be halfway useful. Happily the main camera is altogether more successful, with still
shots showing accurate colors and exposure, if a tendency to over-processing to handle noise in
lower light situations. The LED flash tries hard and is one of the better examples we’ve seen,
though it still suffers from the usual range issues. Unfortunately there’s no dedicated camera
button, which given the G2x’s imaging abilities seems an oversight.

5 Tips to Extend Your Laptop Battery's Life

Three Laptop Parts You Can Replace Cheaply on eBay

The Sony vgn-tz37n/r battery on my Asus U6S laptop is just over three years old. Unsurprisingly, it
can barely hold a charge anymore, in part because the person who used it most (I'm looking at you, Mrs.
Hassle-Free PC) kept it plugged in all the time. As I've mentioned in the past, that's a surefire way to
reduce a battery's longevity and capacity.


Needless to say, a replacement is long overdue. Just one problem: Asus wants $90 for a new TOSHIBA
pa3356u-1brs battery . And that's not at all unusual: I've seen laptop batteries selling for as much as
$150. Crazy!


Fortunately, I know where to go to find cheap laptop parts: eBay. And, sure enough, with a little searching
I found a U6S-compatible Dell xps m1210 battery for just $37 shipped. The seller has an excellent
rating, and the Dell inspiron mini 10 battery comes with a three-year warranty. Score!


Your mileage may vary, of course--there won't always be such killer deals for every laptop make and
model. Also, I should note that there's a bit of a safety risk involved in purchasing cheap, third-party Acer
lc.btp00.017 battery . On the other hand, even manufacturers' own Sony vaio vgn-sz55gn/b battery
have been known to have problems, so you might as well save a few bucks.

Blackmagic Design Announces ATEM Camera Converter



The San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments and the California Product Stewardship Council
launched a Canon EOS 5D battery recycling campaign Thursday at Digitech Camera Repair in
Monrovia, one of more than 30 businesses in the San Gabriel Valley that are participating in a new
campaign funded by a grant from CalRecycle.
CalRecycle estimates that more than 500 million Canon BP-827 Battery are sold in California each year,
but only 0.5 percent of them are recycled, according to the campaign.
"Many people don‘t know that in 2006 Sony NP-FR1 Charger batteries were banned from landfills," said
Monrovia Mayor Mary Ann Lutz, who is also the chair of the San Gabriel Valley Council of Governments‘
(COG‘s) Energy, Environment and Natural Resources Committee.
"This is going to be a way to get the word out," Lutz said. "We‘re trying to give options that are easy and
user friendly."
Also in attendance was Cynthia Kurtz, Executive Director of the San Gabriel Valley Economic
Partnership, who stressed that it was important to support the businesses that are participating in the
recycling program. The campaign kicked off one day before Earth Day, which is celebrated around the
world on April 22.
The program is the result of a $400,000 grant from CalRecycle. Bekah Cooke, of COG‘s Energy,
Environment and Natural Resources Committee, said they began working on proposal with the California
Product Stewardship Council (CPSC), after CPSC Director Heidi Sanborn told them about the grant
opportunity in 2008.
The grant went into effect in December of 2009, and the organizations began conducting focus group
research in 2010. By January and February of 2011, interested merchants began receiving the Nikon
EN-EL1 Battery recycling bins, which are also being provided by the Canon LP-E6 battery
manufacturers.
"It‘s a partnership of all the groups together," Sanborn said.
Sanborn said that they are currently promoting the program through press events, ads, and radio spots.
The program will run through April of next year, and the results of it will also give them a good idea as to
which locations are most convenient and where to promote Sony CCD-TRV57 HI8 Battery recycling in
the future.
John Berberian, who hosted the event at his store, Digitech Camera Repair, has already turned in one
box of recycled Nikon EN-EL12 Battery. His second battery-recycling bin is quickly filling up. A sticker

"It will save energy and at the same time it will produce less waste. It‘s a really good project and I really

Monrovia‘s Army Navy Surplus store and Dollmaker‘s Kattywompus are also participating in the Sony

multimedia interface) cable. The Vado HD is available on Creative's website in many colors.

about 122 grams and has limited internal storage, but an SD card slot allows for expandable

Given current advances, consumers and businesses are going to get a real

material, graphene, which is a super-thin layer of carbon. Used in

CopperTop and Energizer Bunny are marketing terms most Americans are familiar with, but

The myriad choices mean you might be overspending or purchasing the wrong type of
batteries for your needs.


Here‘s what you need to know.


Don‘t buy heavy-duty SONY NP-F330 battery. If ever a product was misnamed, it‘s
heavy-duty batteries, which are just about the lightest-duty, lowest-capacity batteries you
can buy. They have a fraction of the capacity of alkalines but don‘t cost much less. ―I see no
use for heavy-duty SONY NP-FM50 battery for the average consumer — zero,‖ DeWitt said.
Sometimes, manufacturers that include CANON NB-1LH battery with their products — for a
remote control, for example — might use the short-life batteries to cut costs, he said.


Disposable alkalines simply work. Quality of single-use alkaline CANON LP-E5 battery is
similar among brands, so shop by price. A notable exception is the Energizer Max Alkaline,
which was a poor-performing CASIO NP-60 battery in Consumer Reports tests reported in
December. Alkalines have a long shelf life, usually more than five years, making them ideal
for seldom-used devices such as flashlights and smoke detectors. They‘re also best for
low-draw devices like wall clocks.


―There are definitely times when you want to stick with regular alkaline FUJIFILM NP-120
battery,‖ said Christine Frietchen of buy-laptop-battery.org , which compiles and
summarizes other reviews.


Buy alkalines in bulk. In small quantities, a good price on standard alkalines would be 50
cents each for standard AA cells. But you can pay near half that if you‘re willing to buy in
bulk. You‘re not taking a huge risk of FUJIFILM NP-40 battery going dead before you use
them, because alkalines have such a long shelf life. Best storage is a cool, dry place, but not
a refrigerator or freezer, according to manufacturers.


A recent offer found via camera-battery.co.uk     was for a 24-pack of Duracell Procell AA
FUJIFILM NP-80 battery for about $8 from buy-laptop-battery.org . That‘s just 33 cents per

for $25.95, or 26 cents each before shipping costs.
And keep an eye out for manufacturer coupons. Stacking a sale and a coupon might mean
you get name-brand batteries cheaper than generics.


Rechargeables can be a very good option. Besides being an environmentally appealing
option, creating less SONY NP-BG1 camera battery waste, rechargeable batteries can make
great financial sense.


They are more expensive upfront, perhaps $2 to $4 each, but they can be recharged
hundreds of times. With some AA SONY NP-FT1 battery costing 50 cents to $1 each,

Rechargeables can be especially good for cameras, DeWitt said. ―Rechargeables in most
cameras actually perform better because they deliver more current,‖ he said. ―Some

Seek out hybrid rechargeables. Today‘s rechargeables retain most of their charge much
longer, and many will work right out of the package. That‘s a huge improvement for anyone
who was frustrated by previous-generation rechargeables that always seemed to be dead
just when you needed them most.


―If I haven‘t touched my camera for two months, I find they‘ll still work,‖ DeWitt said.


Consumer Reports recommended all the rechargeable brands it tested, not finding a poor
performer. The Sanyo brand, called Eneloop, gets especially high ratings across different
reviews.


―Owner reviews for the Eneloop SONY NP-F970 battery are terrific. In fact, we had a hard
time finding anyone who didn‘t like them,‖ Frietchen said.


Rechargeable batteries should be recycled. See for a list of SONY NP-F330 battery recyclers,
which include many prominent retailers, such as Best Buy, Home Depot and Radio Shack.


Weigh the value of superbatteries. High-capacity disposable JVC BN-VF707 battery, such
as lithium ion, are great performers, lasting a long time, according to tests. But you‘ll pay
for it, spending maybe double or even four times more than regular alkalines. They also
have a longer shelf life than alkalines and are somewhat lighter than traditional batteries.
So, if you don‘t want the hassle of changing batteries often or, in the case of portable
devices, carrying extra CANON BP-711 battery, long-life batteries might be appropriate.


An alternative for on-the-go CASIO NP-20 charger batteries is to use rechargeable cells
and carry a Canon NB-3L charger. Some chargers can be powered by your vehicle‘s power

How many times have you gone out spotting for the day and found yourself
with a dead Canon LP-E6 battery? If it has not happened to you consider
yourself lucky. A dead or severely depleted batter can ruin your afternoon
when the special livery you were waiting for comes in right after your
camera shuts down.

Another common practice (by yours truly) is to “accidentally” leave your
charger at home when going on a trip. I have to admit I am guilty of that
practice more than once and by now I have learned my lesson. More on that
later„
Ever since cameras started to sport built-in light meters, Samsung ST60

This short article could never do justice to the development of modern

re-usable batteries.
The two most important battery technologies today are NiMH (Nickel
Metal-Hydride) and Li-ion    (Lithium-Ion). The two technologies are very
similar in their resulting capacities and energy output with minor
differences in how they discharge. Lithium-ion batteries are the most
effective Nikon COOLPIX S220 Charger batteries today as lithium has the
lowest density of any of the metals on the periodic table and it is also
the lightest metal. Interestingly for us, lithium is used in strengthening
alloys used in airplanes.

So what about my camera?

Hopefully I have not bored you to death. Let’s talk about what are the
common types of batteries used in cameras today.
NiCd
Some camera manufacturers still use (NiCd) Nickel-Cadmium rechargeable
Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ 5A Battery. NiCd batteries dominated the landscape
of modern electronics rechargeable batteries. The main advantage of this
type of Sony DCR-HC47 Charger battery is the high current drain it is
capable of withstanding. NiCd batteries are commonly used in applications
requiring sudden high bursts of energy such as motors. NiCd batteries are
also widely available and prices have dropped considerably in the last
few years. Negative traits such as “memory effect” and temperature
sensitivity have caused manufacturers to select newer more expensive
technologies.
Memory effect
A NiCd Canon LP-E8 battery can exhibit this effect when charged and
discharged numerous times to the same charge state (both depleted and
charged). If discharged to a certain level and not fully drained, as the

will show a decrease in output voltage. This means the device being powered
can suddenly stop operating.
Temperature sensitivity
This is a two-fold problem. NiCd Sony NP-FH50 Battery perform poorly as

eliminates the drawbacks of NiCd technology by having no adverse
memory-effect and can also withstand higher temperatures without damage.

the cost of the metals used.
Advantages and Disadvantages
Nickel Metal-Hydride batteries also have a higher energy to density ratio
which means you get higher capacity in the same space. They also have a
better discharge curve than NiCd and Alkaline Jvc GR-DVL150 Battery
especially under high current drain. NiMH batteries also have a longer
lifespan than NiCds and are safer for the environment. NiMH is currently
the most widely used high end Canon NB-2LH Battery technology, widely used
now in modern Digital Cameras and Electric Vehicles.
Some disadvantages are a higher self-drain rate than NiCds and when
over-discharged, polarity reversal can occur damaging the Canon NB-4L
Charger battery and causing it to fail permanently.
Li-ion
Lithium-Ion technology is by far the most advanced battery technology
today. Li-ion batteries have higher capacity, no memory effect,
rechargeable over a longer lifespan and are more durable than any other
technology. The only disadvantage being a much higher cost than competing
technologies.
It is more widely used in small electronic devices such as cell phones
due to the smaller sizes and the need for longer Canon BP-511 battery life
in the smallest possible space.
Maximizing your batteries performance

So what about my Samsung ST60 Battery? As I mentioned at the beginning
of the article, running out of battery power during an outing can be really
depressing. Whether you find yourself with a single battery and no spares
or you only own one Samsung ES73 Battery of not-so-high capacity, there
are things you can do to make the charge last longer:
•        If your camera has an “Auto Power Saving” mode, use it. Make
sure you know how it works in case it reduces performance in a way that
will hamper your ability to take pictures in a particular situation.If
your camera offers Live View, do not use it. Use the Optical Viewfinder;
you’ll get a more realistic view of the scene anyway.
•        Disable any automatic settings you do not need. Anything that says
automatic usually means a drain on the Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W35
Charger battery, even if a small amount, every bit counts.
•        Most cameras will use the battery when turned off. You should take
out the battery if you’re not going to use the camera for a long time.
•        Turn off vibration reduction on your lens if possible. You really
don’t need it if your shutter speeds are above 1/800th sec anyway.
•        If you’re desperate, turn off auto-focus. Use Gaffer’s tape to
lock down the focus ring at infinity. If the airplanes are far enough,
you’re shooting at infinity anyway.
•        Use Silent Wave of Ultra Sonic auto-focus lenses when possible.
Sony calls their technology “Super Sonic Motor”. These Auto-Focus
lenses without a built in motor use the camera’s internal focus motor
and put a much higher drain on your Nikon D5000 Battery.

•        Keep your Canon NB-5L battery warm. Cold weather drains your
batteries faster. If you can, use an external power source or battery pack
tucked away in your pocket inside your coat.
•        No editing in- DIGITAL VIDEO CAMERA DC5288 camera. That also means
no deleting in the field; wait until you get home. See the last tip below.
The LCD uses a lot of high current voltage and it kills Sony NP-F970 Charger
batteries.
•       Get out of the habit of stabbing your shutter button half way on
and on before taking the shot. Most cameras activate Auto-Focus motors,
Vibration Reduction Motors and the light meter(s) in this state, all of
which drain your Canon EOS-1DS MARK II Battery . As you prepare for the
shot, there is no need to keep the subject in focus or the lens steady.
Wait until the last possible moment to half-press, let the AF and VR settle
and then gently roll your finger on the shutter all the way to take the
shot.
•       Take LESS pictures. Turn your Continuous Drive Mode to the lowest
setting or anywhere from 2 frames to 4 frames per second if you can. Unless
you’re shooting the Blue Angels Solos crossing, you can get by with three
or four shots.
•       Keep the camera On. It may sound counter-intuitive, but some
cameras consume a lot of power during initialization and power down. Just
leave it on and rely on the other tips for extending the life of your Sony
DCR-DVD92E Charger battery.
•       Don’t use the built-in flash if your camera has one. Make sure
it is off and can’t accidentally turn on. Charging the capacitor of the
flash even once can drain your Fujifilm FinePix J30 Charger battery much
more quickly than by other means.
•       Only buy and use OEM batteries. Do not purchase third party
batteries or Gray Market batteries. Always buy from reputable dealers in
your area or on The Internet. Not only can third party batteries be of

let’s you use standard off-the-shelf AA or AAA batteries.
And finally, No Chimping!
•       Checking your pictures on the rear LCD screen is the best way to

Some Sound Advice
While the above tips can really help you get the most life out of

•       Have at least 2 batteries for EACH of your cameras. Invest in an

•       When traveling, pack the charger(s) first and the Sony NP-FH50
Battery. Then your camera(s) and finally your lenses. After they are
packed, double check your charger is packed and the extra batteries are
packed. Yes, I have left batteries, chargers and both behind when
traveling. It was a very expensive trip. Only after your camera gear is
properly packed, pack your clothes and toiletries.
•       Find out ahead of time the nearest camera stores to your intended
destination(s) and write down their telephone number and address. Call
them ahead of time to find out if they stock your camera(s) Samsung VP-W90

•       Make friends with other photographers. If out spotting, don’t
be afraid to ask a fellow spotter for a spare battery (or a compact flash
card) if they have compatible camera gear. Knowing your fellow spotters

Sony Ericsson refreshes Xperia Mini, Xperia Mini Pro

Sony Ericsson unveiled the follow-up models to last year's Xperia X10 Mini and Xperia X10
Mini Pro today, refreshing the pair with Gingerbread and improved specifications.
Due later this year, both handsets feature a 3-inch touch display, 5-megapixel camera, and
1GHz Snapdragon processor. As was the case with the first generation of these Xperia phones,
the primary difference between the two is that the Mini Pro features a slide-out QWERTY
keyboard, whereas the Mini is touch only. Additionally, the Mini Pro adds a front-facing VGA
camera and a pair of business-minded apps: Office Suite and McAfee Antivirus.
At first glance, these new handsets look nearly identical to their predecessors, but there are
plenty of subtle differences. The screen size has been bumped up ever so slightly from 2.55
inches to 3 inches, adding Sony's Reality Display with Mobile Bravia Engine for good measure.
Further, the 5-megapixel camera is now capable of recording 720p HD video, a point Sony is
quick to promote. As it stands today, the Xperia Mini is the smallest Android phone in the world
able to record video in high definition.

Sony Ericsson has also revised the user experience for both phones, allowing for up to 16 app
shortcuts on their home screens. What's more, a new application, Facebook inside Xperia,
provides quick access to sharing, liking, and commenting from various places within the phone.
The camera battery has been improved for the Xperia Mini and Xperia Mini Pro, adding
upwards of 30 percent more life. While I don't anticipate gamers and heavy users to flock to
either of these phones, there's nothing wrong with a little extra juice at the end of the day.
Both phones are expected to debut in the Q3 of 2011 across various global markets. Look for
pricing to be unveiled later this summer as select carriers are announced.

handheld electronic equipment, today announced the launch of its first direct methanol fuel-cell product: Dynario,
an external power source that delivers power to mobile digital consumer products. Dynario, together with a
dedicated fuel cartridge for refueling on the go, will be launched in Japan, in a limited edition of 3,000 units only,
and will be exclusively available at Shop1048 , Toshiba’s direct-order web site for digital consumer products in the

The power consumption of mobile electronic devices, including mobile phones, has greatly increased with added

The degrading run-time of notebook dell inspiron 1545 battery may be a thing of the
past, without waiting for fuel cells, if Boston Power’s Sonata cells live up to their claims.

in our mobile phones and many other portable devices — get marginally better, in terms
of product evolution. Compared to the NiCAD and NiMH notebook sony vaio

been a while since we’ve had to worry about the ―memory effect‖ that meant being careful

They don’t hold a full day’s charge, or they do at the expense of adding bulk, weight and

use them; within a year or less, run-time seriously begins to degrade. And they take too
long to charge.


Some consumers remain wary to conduct mobile transactions but perception, reality
aren’t in sync

disposal issues.


One company claiming a better compaq presario 1200 ac adapter battery — that is,

safer to use and dispose of.


However, ZPower doesn’t seem to have any actual product yet, despite ―This year for
sure‖-type (with apologies to Bullwinkle T. Moose) claims for the past year or so. The web
site doesn’t list any products, the latest press release is dated September 2009… even
mobile fuel cells have actually come to market ahead of ZPower.


But at least one company has actually delivered product: Boston Power, including its
Sonata TOSHIBA satellite a105-s2071 battery for use in notebooks and other
portable/mobile devices and applications, and Swing batteries ―suitable for electric
vehicles, industrial equipment, and utility applications.‖


There aren’t as many vendors offering Sonata-type sony vgp-bps2 battery as I’d expect.
HP started offering some in early 2009, either as an accessory pack or (for a model sold
in Europe) shipped as the standard dell inspiron 1545 ac adapter battery. According
to Boston Power, HP offers them, mostly as ―the HP Long Life Battery Accessory,‖ with
fifteen commercial notebook models.


And Boston Power has just announced a deal with Asus, offering them standard with
ASUS B Series notebooks.


Unlike traditional lithium-ion hp pavilion n5440 battery, where run time degrades
within two years or even one, says Sally Bament, VP of Marketing, Boston Power, Boston
Power’s maintain like-new run time for over three years: ―Our chemistry guarantees that
like-new run time for well over three years, based on cycle life.‖


Is that really the case? I don’t know…but HP and Asus both offer three-year warrantees
on the Sonata sony vgn-t30b/l battery, guaranteeing performance, according to
Bament.


Also, says Bament, ―We support 90% charge in 90 minutes, and we can charge even faster,
the cell can charge to 80% in 30 minutes.‖


―There’s no question that the longer Sony pcga-bp71 battery life is important, and so is
fast charge, once you have used a notebook long enough where these aren’t the case,‖ says
analyst Bob O’Donnell, Vice President, Clients and Displays, IDC. ―The challenge for
Boston Power is that they are a small supplier, and larger vendors like HP often want to
second-source, which isn’t an option here.‖


According to Bament, dell 6y270 battery capacity, and pricing from Boston Power, are
comparative with traditional LiON TOSHIBA pa3383u-1brs battery… although in
terms of price, Bament notes, ―The vendor may get a premium, with the three year
warrantee.‖ (Showing that some computer vendors have studied with the airline industry
school of pricing.)


I find it interesting — and unlikely — that, if these dell latitude d630 battery work as
claimed, only HP and Asus have jumped on the electric bandwagon. I’d expect, at
minimum, Apple, Lenovo, Dell… well, everybody.


Bament’s response: ―We have publicly announced Asus and HP at this time.‖


IDC’s O’Donnell’s point regarding second-sourcing is a reasonable explanation. I think
that if I were running Boston Power, I’d be doing my dangdest to license the heck out of
the technology, if need be.


Fortunately and interestingly, the rest of us don’t have to wait for the next round of deals.
Sonata TOSHIBA pa3356u-1brs battery are available for Lenovo, Dell, Toshiba and
other notebooks, not to mention for digital cameras, camcorders, PDAs and more,

Apple iPad review: time to sell the laptop?

I took a leap of faith and sold my laptop, using the money to order an
iPad unseen from the US. A mad decision? I had my doubts.

‘It’s either a notebook with no keyboard or a massive iPhone without
the phone,’ said a friend of mine. Fair point – and when I first held
it in my paws I realised they were right. It plays music, calls up e-mails,
keeps my calendar, surfs the internet and has countless apps that do
everything from providing a Tube map to offering thousands of free books
– just like every smart phone. There’s also the risk of paying for two
mobile phone contracts, because you’ll need a 3G network when not in range
of a wi-fi connection and your existing phone SIM card won’t work. (I
had ordered the WiFi version, which I could use with my existing broadband
connection.)

But the big difference is the large screen. It might not have the same
clear definition of dedicated readers such as Amazon’s Kindle or Sony’s
eReader but it is in glorious colour – and oh, how glorious. Everyone
who has seen it has instantly fallen for its charms. Whip it out in public
and you’re besieged by drooling onlookers.

A Camera That Honors the Flip
This column might look like a review of Casio‘s radically designed Tryx camera. But it‘s really a thinly
disguised defense of single-purpose gadgets.


The latest in technology from the Times‘s David Pogue, with a new look.


The design of Casio's TRYX camera makes possible a bunch of neat shooting options. More Photos
The Tryx ($250) is a very simple camera. It has only two buttons. It has no optical zoom. It doesn‘t have
an image stabilizer. You can‘t remove the camera battery. You can‘t set the aperture or shutter speed.
Casio is calling it ―the Flip of still cameras.‖


That, of course, is a reference to the incredibly simple Flip pocket camcorder. People loved the Flip
because it worked: the first time, every time. When something happened worth filming, you pressed the
big red button on the back. You didn‘t mess with tapes or disks or menus or mode dials or flipping out a
screen.


That‘s why the Flip became outrageously popular. Its maker sold two million Flips in the first six months.
It became the No. 1 bestselling camcorder on Amazon.com, and remained there ever since. As of last
month, its sales represented 37 percent of all camcorders, and kept climbing.


That‘s right. Two years ago, Cisco bought the Flip for $590 million. Then last month, it shut down the
whole division and fired 550 people. The blogosphere reverberated with a rationale: ―Smartphones killed
it. Nobody needs a dedicated recording machine when the phone can record video.‖


But if that were true, then Flip sales would not have still been climbing at the time of its demise. If that
were true, we wouldn‘t still be buying 35 million still cameras a year (phones have still cameras, too). If
that were true, nobody would buy GPS units for their cars.


Phone photography, phone video and phone GPS have their places. But they‘re different places. They‘re
additional places. They don‘t replace single-purpose gear in their traditional roles. You‘re not going to
take iPhone pictures of your wedding. Normal people don‘t suction-cup their phones to their windshields
for navigation. And you won‘t be able to fire up the video app on your phone in time to catch your
toddler‘s sudden adorable burst of singsong.


No, Cisco killed the Flip for its own business reasons — primarily to demonstrate to shareholders, after
last year‘s stock nose dive, that it‘s serious about focusing on its core businesses.


All right, rant over. Now then: the Tryx. This gadget isn‘t just dedicated to a single purpose. It‘s also
dedicated to a single audience: young, fun-loving adults.


It has a lot going for it. First is the wild design. At first glance, it looks exactly like an iPhone: a thin, black
slab. And you can use it that way, holding it as you would an app phone.


But the outer edge is, in fact, a sturdy rectangular frame. The body of the camera connects to a hinge at
one end of it. You can push it around the hinge in a complete circle, through the frame and back around
again. It‘s a little bit like those toy gyroscopes. The outer metal circles don‘t move — you can grip that
framework while the flywheel spins madly inside. (That‘s the best analogy I could think of. Leave me
alone.)


Once the camera body is rotated away from its starting position, you can also tip it up or down 270
degrees on a second pivot point, so that it points more toward the sky or the ground. Very trycky indeed.
This design makes possible a bunch of neat shooting options. The swiveling camera clicks at 90-degree
stopping points, but there‘s enough friction that you can stop it at any point. So you can use the frame as
a tripod, propping the camera at any angle. You can use the frame as a hanger, so the camera dangles
from a branch or wall nail or lamp knob, for superstable shooting. And because the lens is on the frame
and not the body, self-portraits are a piece of cake, too.


In these configurations, you‘ll usually want to be able to fire the shot without pressing the shutter button.
There‘s a self-timer, of course, but also a really cool motion-activated shutter. On the supersharp,
three-inch touch screen, you drag a hand icon wherever you want — say, the upper-right corner. Then,
once you‘ve stepped into the frame, you move your hand to that spot in the composition, and wave. Two
seconds later, the shot fires. You can wave again for another shot, and another. Absolutely brilliant.


When you‘re capturing video, you can grip the empty frame as a handle; the whole affair looks like you‘re
holding a traditional camcorder, since the camera body flips 90 degrees away in either direction (lefties,
rejoice!). It‘s like, yes, the Flip camcorder; there‘s no zoom and no stabilization, and the video looks
terrific (1080p high definition). There‘s an HDMI jack right on the camera, so you can connect it directly to
a TV for playback.


The name Tryx is apropos for a couple reasons. In addition to all of those body-frame tricks, this camera
does some pretty rocking photographic tricks, too. Its Slide Panorama mode lets you whip the camera
around you in space; it snaps many photos and then stitches them together into one enormously wide
panorama, instantly and incredibly well. It‘s a lot like the extremely useful Sweep Panorama mode on
Sony cameras, except that on the Casio, your panorama can capture a full 360-degree circle around you.

The touch screen harbors a few tricks of its own. Instead of using the tiny shutter button next to the
screen, you can tap anywhere on the screen itself to fire the shot. You can use two-finger, iPhone-style
pinch-and-spread techniques to zoom into a photo you‘ve taken. You can drag across the screen to flip
through your pictures.


The image on the screen always flips upright, no matter what crazy angle you‘ve twisted it into. When you
twist the camera body upright, you can even film tall, skinny videos.


What a weird, weird camera. Sometimes it seems like a Flip camcorder, in that it‘s fast, fun and
fumble-proof. Sometimes it feels like a point-and-shoot camera (an Advanced menu lets you adjust the
exposure, white balance and ISO — light sensitivity — but not manual focus, aperture or shutter speed).
Sometimes it seems like a phone; for example, it has an LED video light instead of a real flash. (At the
moment, in fact, the Tryx has no still camera flash at all; Casio says that a coming software update will
turn the LED light into a flash for stills.)


The photos are slightly better than a phone‘s, but not as good as, say, those from a Canon pocket
camera. There‘s a softness to them, a tendency to ―blow out‖ the bright areas into pure white, and some
pretty bad distortion at the edges of the frame. (That‘s a side effect of the camera‘s extremely wide-angle
21mm lens.) Since there‘s no stabilization, there are plenty of ruined blurry shots in low light.
Now, most people should probably opt for something more traditional; for the same money, you can get
much better pictures.


There‘s still value in Casio‘s crazy experiment, though. Many of the Tryx‘s ideas — the wave shutter,
multitouch screen, the frame concept, 360-degree panoramas — deserve to live on in other, future
cameras. And many among Casio‘s intended audience — those fun-loving young adults — will get a lot
of joy out of this camera. Especially if the price drops, as Casio hints that it will in a few months.


The bottom line: the Tryx is great-looking, superslim, a blast to use and almost Flip-simple. Above all, it‘s
solid evidence that there‘s value in a single-purpose gadget.

Camera Has an Eye for Photos, Brain for Wi-Fi

The pocket-size, point-and-shoot digital camera was once a standard part of many consumers‘ electronic
tool kit. But it has been challenged by smartphones with better and better built-in cameras and photo
apps. While they lack some photographic capabilities, like physical zoom lenses, phones are carried
everywhere all the time. Plus, they are wirelessly connected to email and the Web, where digital pictures
often wind up.




Now, Samsung has introduced a pocket camera that aims to erode the advantages of
smartphones—even though the company also produces phones. This new camera, the SH100, has
Wi-Fi built in. This isn‘t the first camera with built-in Wi-Fi, but Samsung hopes to better capitalize on it. It
also competes with the add-on memory card called Eye-Fi, that brings Wi-Fi abilities to almost any
camera. It has easy, preconfigured uploading to Facebook, YouTube, Picasa, email and other online
destinations, plus a bunch of added wireless features, including cordless transfer of photos to a PC.


I‘ve been testing the SH100. It carries a list price of $200 without a memory card but can be found at
various merchants for as little as $150. Its wireless capability requires no contract or monthly payment.
My verdict is that the SH100 pretty much does what it promises as a wireless device, and takes very
good photos and videos. Unlike on a cellphone, its wireless functions don‘t work almost everywhere. Still,
for those who would like some of the wireless ease of a phone in a better camera, it might be tempting.


The SH100 is a good-looking, pocket camera with a resolution of 14.2 megapixels, a 5x optical zoom and
a wide-angle lens. Smartphones typically have much lower resolution and lack optical zoom lenses.


It has a large, 3-inch touch screen on the back, for framing and viewing shots, and for controlling its many
functions. There are only four physical buttons—a home button, a power button, a playback button, and a
combination shutter and zoom controller. Everything else is controlled by tapping on icons and menus on
the screen.




The SH100 has zoom and wide-angle lenses.


The user interface has been designed to resemble the array of apps on a smartphone. Unfortunately, the
SH100 uses a less expensive, and much less responsive, type of touch screen than is typically found on
smartphones. So, tapping on icons, scrolling through menus and, especially, typing email addresses and
wireless login details, can be a frustrating process for people trained now to use sensitive phone and
tablet screens.


This was my biggest gripe about the SH100. In my tests, using its screen required extra pressure,
multiple presses and corrections. Samsung implicitly acknowledges this by including a plastic stylus with
the camera. Using the stylus makes things easier, but it‘s another thing to carry and seems easy to lose.


Samsung says the SH100 is mainly about connectivity, and its photographic capabilities and features
aren‘t significantly different from those on its other point-and-shoot models. In my tests, it took sharp,
vivid photos and videos, indoors and out. It has all the standard settings and effects I‘ve seen in other
point-and-shoot cameras, including auto and more manual modes, and various preconfigured settings for
scenarios such as sunsets or beach photos.


One of its nicer features is something called Magic Frame, which merges a photo you take with a
background. For instance, it can place your photo in a poster on the side of a bus-stop shelter, or on the
screen of an old black-and-white TV. It also has a 3-D carousel view for browsing through your photos,
and another mode where you can flip through pictures by tilting the camera.




The SH100 has a touch screen on the back for viewing photos and controlling functions.


But I mainly tested the camera as a wireless device, with mixed results. I was able to connect almost
every time to noncommercial Wi-Fi networks in my home and office, and was easily able to post pictures
to my accounts on Facebook and Picasa, and videos to my YouTube account. I also was easily able to
email photos. This required a one-time setup process for each online account.


But there were some issues. In one instance, during a meeting with Samsung officials to show me the
camera, it wouldn‘t work with my office Wi-Fi, though my test unit later did fine in the office. Also, when
uploading to Facebook, the camera installs a Facebook app called MashupSocial, which you may or may
not want.


More important, the camera‘s Wi-Fi won‘t work with many commercial Wi-Fi hot spots, such as those in
coffee shops or airports, that require a login process via a browser, because it lacks a browser. To
compensate, Samsung includes a free three-month trial subscription to Boingo, a service that automates
logins to some of these services. After the trial ends, Boingo costs $8 a month, but it is optional.


Also, the camera can‘t automatically send any photo you snap. You can only choose to send photos
when you are in playback mode. And this is a manual process. You also can‘t queue up photos you take
outside of W-Fi range for later instant uploading when you get near a compatible Wi-Fi network.


To save Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W70 Charger battery life, the camera doesn‘t remain connected to
Wi-Fi. It connects only when you choose to transmit, and then disconnects. This is a relatively slow
process. Samsung says the SH100′s Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55 Charger battery can shoot more than
200 pictures on a single charge, but that Sony NP-FP50 Battery life degrades if you use Wi-Fi a lot.


I also successfully tested a couple of other wireless features. I was able to wirelessly transmit photos
from the camera to a Windows PC using a special Samsung computer program called Auto Backup.
(This doesn‘t work on Macs.) I also was able to use a feature called Remote Viewfinder that lets you
control the camera remotely from a Samsung smartphone. The camera can also wirelessly beam photos
to a compatible TV, but I wasn‘t able to test this.


If you‘re willing to accept the wireless limitations of the SH100, and value its photographic advantages
compared to a phone‘s camera, it might offer the right balance for you.

Is that really the case? I don’t know…but HP and Asus both offer three-year warrantees

according to Bament.

Also, says Bament, ―We support 90% charge in 90 minutes, and we can charge even faster,
the cell can charge to 80% in 30 minutes.‖

―There’s no question that the longer Acer aspire 3000 battery life is important, and so
is fast charge, once you have used a notebook long enough where these aren’t the case,‖
says analyst Bob O’Donnell, Vice President, Clients and Displays, IDC. ―The challenge for
Boston Power is that they are a small supplier, and larger vendors like HP often want to
second-source, which isn’t an option here.‖

IDC’s O’Donnell’s point regarding second-sourcing is a reasonable explanation. I think
that if I were running Boston Power, I’d be doing my dangdest to license the heck out of
the technology, if need be.

Fortunately and interestingly, the rest of us don’t have to wait for the next round of deals.

Scientists claim tenfold increase in laptop battery life

performance if a technology breakthrough from scientists in the US comes to fruition.

According to researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, replacing

Sony Cyber-shot HX100V review - Features

The Sony HX100V joins an expanding group of 30x optical zoom superzoom cameras, going
head to head against the likes of the Canon PowerShot SX30 IS and Fujifilm FinePix HS20
EXR. Where the HX100V sits apart from the competition is with its GPS (Global Positioning
Satellite) technology (as represented by the ‗V' designation in the name) that can track and
geotag images with location data.


The HX100V's 27-810mm (30x) optical zoom has a long-reaching range and can be adjusted
by either using the manual zoom ring or zoom rocker on top of the camera - the choice is yours.
For added control the same zoom ring doubles up as a manual focus ring by the flick of a
switch, meaning that both zoom and focus are always well-positioned for optimum control.
Optical Steady Shot, Sony's brand of image stabilisation, means lens-shifts take place to
counteract camera sake for sharper images that benefit image preview in real time. Plus an
f/2.8-5.6 aperture means a reasonable amount of brightness and depth of field control at all
focal lengths.
On the Cyber-shot HX100V's inside is a 16.2-megapixel Exmor R CMOS sensor - the ‗R' being
Sony's way of saying ‗back-lit' for an improved construction for better image quality. The
sensor size is the same as that found in the majority of compact cameras, however.


As well as a tilt-angle 3in, 920k-dot LCD on the camera's rear, the HX100V also has a built-in
electronic viewfinder (also 920k-dot) that's ideal for use in bright sunlight or for added support
and stability when framing at long focal lengths.


Back when the HX1, Sony's 2008 superzoom, hit the shelves it was the first model to feature
Sweep Panorama. This innovative mode allows for real-time panorama capture that
auto-stitches in-camera for immediate results. Not only did this start a craze for competitor
manufacturers to create similarly-named (but ultimately the same) modes, it's also lead the
HX100V's Sweep Panorama to step things up a gear. Now there's iSweep Panorama HR
(High Resolution) that uses a larger portion of the sensor for larger final images and, should
you have the right equipment to display it, 3D panoramas can also be shot too.


Stills images are the order of the day and can even be reeled off at a rate of 10 per second in
the burst mode. But, as with all things Sony, 3D is also at the forefront. A ‗3D' option on the
mode dial shoots two consecutive images and processes them in camera to create an MPO
file that can be played back on 3DTVs or similar devices. The HX100V's screen itself is
standard, so the effect cannot be witnessed on the camera itself.


Add 1080p50 movie capture to the fold and the HX100V also presents top-spec moving image
capture. It's possible to make full use of the lens' zoom during recording and full-time
autofocus takes care of the focusing for you.

Quarter 2011 Financial Results

NEW YORK, May 16, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Advanced Canon NB-4L battery Technologies, Inc.
(Nasdaq:ABAT), a leading developer, manufacturer and distributor of rechargeable Polymer Lithium-Ion
(PLI) Canon LP-E10 battery as well as a manufacturer of electric vehicles, today announced financial
results for the quarter ended March 31, 2011.
The Company had revenue of $28,641,735 for the three months ended March 31, 2011, an increase of
$9,092,718 or 46.5%, compared to $19,549,017 for the three months ended March 31 2010. The
increase in revenues was primarily due to the contribution of revenues from:


        Electric Vehicles Manufactured by Wuxi ZQ. Wuxi ZQ revenues of $12,743,153 for the three
         months ended March 31, 2011 represented an increase of $3,646,503 compared to revenues
         during the three months ended March 31, 2010.
        Canon POWERSHOT S40 Charger Batteries Manufactured in the new Shenzhen Facilities.
         The Company acquired the assets of Shenzhen ZQ in January, 2011. The first quarter revenue
         attributable to the new Shenzhen operations was $4,348,181.
        Batteries Manufactured in Harbin. Revenues of $11,550,402 from the Company's Harbin-based
         Kodak KLIC-7004 Battery operations for the three months end of March 31, 2011 represented
         an increase of $1,098,035 compared to $10,452,367 in revenue for the three months ended
         March 31 2010.


At March 31, 2011 the Company had a backlog of $60,192,583 for delivery through the next 6 months,
including a Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W170 Charger battery backlog of approximately $49,434,363.

Although revenue increased by 47%, the cost of goods sold increased by 69%, resulting in a reduction in

gross margin from 49% in the first quarter of 2010 to 41% in the first quarter of 2011. The primary reason
for the decrease was the low margin achieved on sales of small capacity Canon NB-5L

Charger batteries manufactured in the new Shenzhen facility. Although management believes that it will

be able to improve the profitability of the Shenzhen operations, gross margins for the remainder of 2011

are likely to remain lower than in 2010 due to the inclusion of the Shenzhen sales.

Operating income increased by 40% quarter-to-quarter, reaching $9,803,127 in the first quarter of

2011. Other income (expense) contributed an additional $9,110,629, primarily due to the reduction in the

fair value of the Company's outstanding stock purchase warrants that occurred when the stock price fell

suddenly at the end of the quarter. The net income for the first quarter of 2011, therefore, was

$16,969,206, an increase of 126% from the first quarter of 2010.
Zhiguo Fu, Chairman and CEO of Advanced Nikon EN-EL12 Battery Technologies, said: "We are

pleased by the strong financial results achieved in the first quarter of 2011. Our capacity for continued

growth is evident in our balance sheet. Even after acquiring both the Shenzhen manufacturing operations

and the industrial park in Dongguan during the quarter, we still had $114,036,493 in working capital at the

end of the quarter, including $86,449,459 in cash. With a solid backlog and an ever-expanding market
presence, we look forward to positive results in the coming months."

Mr. Fu continued: "The strong financial results achieved in the first quarter are particularly heartening, as

our Company is currently under assault from short-sellers and strike suits. Even as we were completing

our quarterly financial report, on May 5, 2011 yet another "report" regarding ABAT was circulated by two

acknowledged short-sellers whose sole objective is to manipulate and depress the price of ABAT shares

for personal financial gain. These and other similar "reports" are premised on gross inaccuracies and

distortion of facts, information derived from unidentified "investigators" and "customers," and

unsubstantiated rumor and innuendo. ABAT has previously responded to these unfounded attacks, will

not dignify them with further response, and will vigorously defend itself in the securities class actions

premised on these baseless publications."

SOURCE celebrates CWU students' work

The scholarly work of Central Washington University students, from human-powered
generators and early American cuisine to a discovery of laser emissions and experiments with
hookworms, will be displayed and celebrated Thursday.
The 16th annual Symposium on University Research and Creative Expression (SOURCE) is
from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Student Union and Recreation Center at CWU.

SOURCE provides a forum for sharing and celebrating student work with the campus and
Ellensburg community. The work will be displayed in a variety of ways, including oral and
poster presentations, artwork and performances.
This year more than 580 people are scheduled to present about 150 oral presentations, 18
creative expression presentations and 138 poster presentations, including 11 on university
satellite campuses.
In addition to the presentations will be a student fashion show, a business plan competition,
saxophone and clarinet performances and a tour of a portable version of the Digital
Visualization Laboratory (DVL) proposed for Science Phase II.

CWU junior Garrett Griffith, from Bothell, is one of many students set to present their work at
SOURCE. Griffith has come up with a bright idea that any cell phone owner can appreciate.
Griffith has created a human-powered electrical generator capable of charging a variety of

from CWU.
The goal of the project, Griffith says, is ―creating a self-powered demonstration system where

REVIEW: AT&T’s Big and Bold Samsung Infuse 4G

We can debate what qualifies as a true 4G phone, but there‘s no arguing the $199 Samsung Infuse 4G
for AT&T‘s network offers the largest display of any phone the carrier sells directly.( CANON NB-5L
battery ) The 4.5-inch Google Android handset uses Samsung‘s latest screen technology, which
certainly makes for a large device; perhaps too large for some. But this handful of a handset uses a thin
design, fast mobile broadband radio and a speedier single-core processor than what competing devices

network for the past two weeks to see if there‘s room in the collective pocket for this new smartphone.


Hardware and Design

As soon as you see the Infuse 4G, you can‘t help but notice the sheer size of the display, which takes up
nearly the entire front of the phone. A small top and bottom bezel holds the front-facing camera, ambient
light sensors, speaker and the four standard Android buttons, which are touch-sensitive on this

Overall it‘s clean and minimal, good for a large handset as too many buttons or controls would simply

the bottom has a second microphone and micro USB port. The back houses a speaker for hands-free

Although the phone has a big footprint — you can see comparisons to other devices in our image gallery

the Infuse 4G actually feels comfortable to hold for such a large-screened device. I occasionally found it
tricky, but not impossible, to use the phone in one hand, and at 5′ 5″ and 125 pounds, I have relatively

Much of the phone is plastic, but the device feels solidly made. The lack of metal helps keep the feel of
the big smartphone lighter than it looks, and the removable back cover is just a thin plastic piece. Taking

Android keyboard, Samung‘s own custom keyboard, and Swype. A handful of AT&T-branded

TouchWiz offers up to seven home screens, and the program launcher is similar to that on Apple iOS
devices. Samsung‘s browser is fairly standard, but offers a useful brightness setting within the application.
The browser experience is on par with any other Android handset at this price and in terms of speed, I
found it to perform a slightly better than on the Nexus One handset I bought last January. For the
benchmark-minded, the Infuse 4G scored 5082 ms using SunSpider (where smaller numbers are better)
as compared to 5487 ms on my Nexus One.(CANON EOS 5D battery) That‘s likely due in part to the
Infuse‘s slightly faster single-core CPU, which clocks in at 1.2 GHz. The Infuse 4G will generally be
slower when compared to a dual-core handset, but only those who have used a dual-core smartphone
would know the difference. The processor keeps Android moving at a fast pace when compared to other
single-core handsets on the market.


Marketed as a 4G handset, the phone radio has outpaced AT&T‘s network. The carrier is in the process
of upgrading to HSPA+ as a stopgap to its planned LTE network rollout. That means the radio in the
phone can handle downloads up to 21 Mbps, yet most of the network can‘t deliver such speeds. However,
as the carrier expands its network, the Infuse 4G is future-proofed to a degree, as it‘s ready for the faster

Mbps uploads, which is much slower than what AT&T‘s competitors offer. Speeds of course, will vary by

Samsung‘s camera sensor impressed me, especially when paired with software that improves video
recording. The camera tops out at 720p image capture, but features an auto-focus function when taking

quick enough to be useful. Regular camera images looked better than video; crisper and cleaner. The
front-facing camera inspires a common complaint: Manufacturers aren‘t angling the sensor, so you have
to tilt the device to stay centered on a video chat. Samsung has an opportunity for improvement here, but
if you‘re not into video chatting, this shouldn‘t prevent you from considering the Infuse 4G.


Call quality was solid, both in normal use and through the speakerphone, and I didn‘t experience any
dropped calls. AT&T‘s network has always been solid in the rural area I live in, so this doesn‘t surprise
me.


Conclusion

If you‘re in the market for large-screened phone that‘s still pocketable, the Infuse 4G is a must-see. The
screen looks fantastic, possibly the best I‘ve seen yet on a handset, even as other phones such as the
Atrix 4G offer a higher resolution. But the size may put some folks off, and no review can tell you if the

Laptop Batteries That Don’t Crap Out a Year Into Their
Life

problem—your shiny new laptop isn't looking so shiny or new anymore, and what's that? The dell inspiron

1545 battery barely holds a charge now? Ugh. I'm skeptical of Leyden Energy's claims, but would give their

batteries a shot.


They claim their lithium-ion, 440watt hours per liter compaq evo n400c battery don't depreciate for at least

three years (supposedly normal ones start losing their charge around the 18-month-mark), and as they come

with a three-year warranty, that's something you can obviously take them to fault with if you discover it's all

bullshit.


Able to operate in higher temperatures than normal sony vaio vgn-nr220e battery, they can also be charged

over 1,000 times. While they'll cost a lot more than the usual laptop batteries (supposedly less than double the

average cost), it might be a cost worth paying. They'll be available online in the coming weeks in Canada at Dr.

Battery, and hopefully in other countries after that.

My neighbor bought one and 1 year to the date it said it did not recognize the Compaq presario 2500 battery

It all depends on the TOSHIBA pa3356u-1brs battery quality to begin with. Not all batteries are created

equal. I leave my laptop plugged in most of the time. I use the battery a few times a month and usually for short

periods of time. Occasionally I have to use the hp omnibook 6000 ac adapter battery heavily and during

those times it performs very well. My laptop is several years old. Being plugged in all the time does not KILL a

battery.... a poorly designed charging circuit that overcharges your battery kills a battery... draining your

Universal External Battery to zero multiple times kills the battery. Heat kills the battery. Lots of things will

KILL a battery, but simply leaving it plugged in does not unless there are other defects involved. Just wish

manufacturers were held responsible for their design flaws.



Notably: I have had the worst experiences with Dell laptops. Bad / weak lcd panel connectors, Dell latitude

d630 battery that die and won't take a charge in less than a year, and many other problems. Personally, I

prefer HP. They aren't perfect, but so far no one has been. My ex-Sony laptop had to have a motherboard

replaced 3 times. It kept frying.



I will never buy a Dell or Sony based on my horrible experiences with them. I've had to fix HPs for people, but

usually not for obvious design flaw type problems unless it is just a poor quality part (wifi card, bluetooth, etc)

I know and understand what you are saying... dell inspiron 1545 battery management is something that

always has to be done from laptops to cameras to power tools, etc...



But one thing is to have a Dell inspiron 1545 ac adapter battery perfectly fine one day,

(as a matter of fact my neighbor used the battery a week prior for about 2½ hrs with a movie with no problem)

... and the next it says that it cannot recognize the battery and will not charge it.

(based on a chip in the IBM thinkpad 760ld battery artificially placing an expiration date / system ON time or

charge cycle).



That is total and utter BS.



I have some old Dell Presarios in the closet that were given to me. A fully charged battery runs for about 5

minutes.... The laptop does not tell me that it cannot longer "recognize" the Dell inspiron 1525 battery and

thus will NOT charge it.



This is not a case of batteries lasting less and less time after a charge.... this is a case of working perfect to zero

form oone day to the other.



And not just my neighbor, but 1000's of users complaining about the same thing.

only to be reminding with a banner in Windows every 5 minutes that the system will not charge the battery.



And why regardless of the charge holding capacity of a dell vostro 1400 battery, a battery is arbitrarily

refused charge when nowhere in any previous history of portable electronics (even those with LiOn batteries)

there has been any failure when charging spent batteries, yet Dell does not agree with you and spent a great

deal of time putting all this purchasing information in the BIOS?.

It was not without a little sadness that we witnessed the end of Sony's Walkman cassette model last year. Sure it
was a long time coming, but the Walkman brand is only rivaled by the iPod in the history of portable music. (Sony

back.


The B Series is an elongated player nearly reaching 10 cm in length, and weighing just 28 grams. Sony claims the

result in 90 minutes of playback time. A full charge requires about 70 minutes. The player also features a backlit
LCD that pulses in time with the music it's playing.

Four tips for better iPhone battery life

David Pogue from the New York Times recently got some tips on improving iPhone Samsung L100
Charger battery life from an Apple Store Genius. We‘ve discussed how to get the most out of your
iPhone‘s Olympus LI-50B Battery on TUAW before, but it‘s worth revisiting since both the iPhone itself
and the software it runs have changed so much since the last time we discussed it.


Three out of Pogue‘s four suggestions for improving Nikon D5000 Battery life come straight from
Apple‘s official Sony NP-FP50 Battery life tips. First, he suggests turning off push email and setting
email to fetch manually. Depending on how many email accounts you have, this could dramatically
improve your Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W100 Charger battery life, but it also means you won‘t receive
new messages until or unless you open the Mail app.


Pogue‘s second suggestion was to turn off Location Services for apps that don‘t necessarily need to have
an active GPS connection. This tip makes sense if you‘re making heavy use of a camera app or a Twitter
client with GPS tagging, but since Location Services generally doesn‘t run in these apps when they‘re
running in the background, it‘s only going to make a positive impact on your Sony Cyber-shot DSC-W55
Charger battery life if you‘re spending a lot of time using these apps.


The third tip was to turn off notifications for most apps, which Pogue says reduces the number of apps
needing to monitor your iPhone‘s status. I turned off notifications for most of my apps long ago, but not

iPhone every five minutes or so, especially since there‘s no global setting to turn off all notifications
during the hours I‘m normally asleep.

Pogue himself admits that it seems odd. The Apple Store Genius he spoke to recommended quitting
backgrounded apps by bringing up the multitasking tray with a double tap of the Home button and holding
down on app icons until they start wiggling and minus symbols appear on them. According to Pogue, the
Genius quit around 40 backgrounded apps on his friend‘s iPhone this way. As Pogue acknowledges, this
tip seems a bit weird considering Apple‘s official stance on multitasking in iOS 4 is that apps running in
the background aren‘t actually running, and therefore shouldn‘t be drawing Canon NB-4L battery life at
all. That having been said, I tried this out myself earlier this week when I noticed my iPhone 4‘s Canon
DIGITAL IXUS 500 battery was barely lasting a full day even when I wasn‘t using it at all, and I saw an
immediate improvement. Naturally, this tip is specific to devices that are capable of multitasking and that
are running iOS 4, which means iPhone 3G owners needn‘t worry about it.


In addition to Pogue‘s tips, two things I‘ve noticed have a fairly big impact on the iPhone‘s Sony NP-F970
Battery life are the screen brightness and Bluetooth. In general, it‘s a good idea to keep the screen
brightness as low as you can while still being able to make out what‘s on-screen. As for Bluetooth, unless
you‘re actively using it with a headset or Personal Hotspot, you should probably turn it off. Even if you‘re
not connected to a Bluetooth device, the iPhone will still periodically scan for such devices if Bluetooth is
activated, and that‘ll run down your Canon LP-E6 battery pretty quickly.

Which should you buy: an iPad2, Kindle or Nook
Color?

As an owner of an iPad since they were first released, I’ve always looked at e-readers like
the Kindle or Nook as too simple and underwhelming as a tech gadget, but that changed
recently.


My elderly in-laws who are voracious readers were instantly hooked when they got a
chance to use a Kindle, which got me to reassess the whole category.(SONY NP-BG1

While there is no question that the iPad (1 or 2) has infinitely more functionality, not
everyone needs all the extra bells and whistles.


In my father-in-law’s case, he only cares about reading books and his carpel tunnel issues
are a non-issue when he reads from his Kindle (with a case designed to have it stand up).
Holding and turning pages on traditional paperbacks were a constant problem for him
because of his wrist pain and the weight of an iPad would make it too much for him as
well.
There is no one-size-fits-all solution, so I’ll highlight my pros and cons for these three

iPad 2 Pros: Most robust platform for apps, music, movies, books, magazines, games,

gives it the largest collection of available books. It can also serve as a digital camera
storage device on vacation (with an optional camera kit) so you don’t have to worry about

useless in direct sunlight.


Kindle Pros: Relatively inexpensive ($114 – $189) small and light, the best for viewing

can hold and turn the page with one hand on a Kindle because the buttons are on each
side.

smaller and boasts a 2 month NIKON EN-EL14 battery life and starts shipping on
June 10th, 2011.


Nook Color Pros: Inexpensive touch screen color device ($249) that can read
children’s stories out loud. Less restrictive than the Kindle so you can borrow books from
public libraries as well as buy them from the B&N store. Readable KODAK CR-V3
battery in direct sunlight (although not as clearly as the Kindle), it provides a more
acceptable web surfing experience and has 140+ apps that can be added. It can play audio
files and even has a Pandora app for streaming music and has e-mail app options.
Consider it the poor-man’s iPad.


Nook Color Cons: Significantly heavier than the Kindle, short Sony Cyber-shot
DSC-G3 charger battery life (@8 hours) because of the color touch screen and no 3G
option for accessing content or the web when there is no wifi available. Not a one handed
reader because of the weight and the need to touch the screen to turn the page.


As you can see, how and where you plan to use the device will have the biggest impact on
which one might be the best choice. If you want it all, get an iPad 2, if you plan to read
more than play and surf, NIKON EN-EL5 battery the Nook Color may be the best fit
and if you just want to read, the Kindle or the new Nook Touch Reader should do just
fine.

This is what you may soon be hearing people say when you take a walk in the park.


Parrot‘s AR Drone,(CASIO EX-Z1080 Charger) locally imported by SMAC, has recently gone
on sale around South Africa and is bound to become a popular toy, specifically among Apple
users.


The AR Drone is in effect a radio-controlled helicopter, but that is like calling the Batmobile a
mere car.


The Drone comprises four rotors that lift it off the ground. It is paired to an iPhone or iPad via is
own wireless network. Onboard, it has two cameras – a cockpit-mounted type and one
underneath. (Universal External Battery )The cockpit camera offers a resolution of 640X480
pixels while the one underneath sports 176x144.

         1. Is it ready to use?


Out of the box, as with almost any other device, the battery has to be charged. This takes a
good hour and a half, which gives you enough time to read the instructions and view all the

also need to download and install the AR Drone software, which can be found on the Apple
App Store as a free download, on your iPhone or iPad.


Once the battery is charged, plug it into the Drone, put on the hull (or exoskeleton, as I prefer

few green lights and you will see what the Drone is seeing – i.e. your screen will change to

         2. Is it easy to use?


The AR Drone is easy to use, but you first have to get the hang of it, meaning you need to
practice a bit.
When I first started playing with the Drone, my routine went something like this:

battery) Very simple to use by itself, but I battled to combine the two buttons at the same time.
I was completely confused when the Drone was facing me as back becomes forward and left
becomes right – causing many high-speed, high-altitude crashes.


        3. Does it operate as advertised?


Compared to remote control helicopters that you get at hobby shops, the Drone is much easier
to use. You don‘t have to build the thing, nor does it cost as much as a helicopter. (Olympus
Blm-1 battery) Although it does look very fragile, I found the Drone very resilient. I lost count
of the number of times I crashed it and all I ever broke was the polystyrene hull, which was
quickly mended with glue.


The Drone automatically hovers when it receives no instructions, which means that, whenever
you feel you are getting into a tricky situation, you just have to let go of the controls. The Drone
stops what you were instructing it to do and hovers on the spot – (Nikon d1h battery) at the
same time compensating for any wind that might be blowing it around. There is also an
emergency cut-out button. However, this should only be used in dire emergencies, as it cuts
power to all the motors – meaning the Drone will fall from the sky like a lump of lead.


Although the AR Drone includes two cameras, there is no recording software. I manage to take
screen grabs on my iPhone, which allowed me to see what my neighbour‘s property looks like
– albeit at very low resolution. There is also no official software to record your flights. These
are a few gaps Parrot should consider filling when they upgrade the firmware.(Hp Photosmart

        4. Is it innovative?


Even though the Drone has been available overseas for quite some time, it is a first for South
Africa and a first for me. Its ease of use, general resilience and clever use of a wireless
network makes it innovative in just about every respect.




        5. Is it value for money?


Parrot markets the quadricopter as taking gaming to the next level. Yes, it does take things to
the next level, but for R3000? That‘s a little steep.(KODAK Easyshare V1003 Charger)
Furthermore, the Drone will only fly for around 10-15 minutes on a single battery charge, so
you will have to buy a second, if not a third battery, at around R400 each.


Also bear in mind that, even though the Drone survives some crashes, there will be the one
that it didn‘t escape. And it‘s not like a PlayStation game where you can press the reset button
and start with a brand new Drone – you will have to buy new bits and pieces. Dell Inspiron
6400 Battery SMAC does stock a full range of spares, but that then becomes yet another cost.


Besides the accessories and batteries, you still need to have an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.


        In conclusion


The AR Drone is really a great toy.(CANON NB-2LH battery) But that‘s all it is – a toy and an
expensive one at that. I would buy it if I had nothing better to do with my money.


However, should Parrot improve on the battery life and the camera resolution, I could think of
endless business and security applications for the AR Drone.
