Commtap courses
We have a range of courses aimed at those working with or caring for
children with communication difficulties including teaching staff, parents,
and speech and language therapists. All our courses are run by
experienced speech and language therapists or specialist language and
communication teachers.

All courses are run in Shoreditch, London except for the music and early
language course which is run in Bethnal Green, London. Both locations
have excellent public transport links. We are also able to run many of
these courses in other locations in the UK – please enquire for details.

Information about the courses
Signalong foundation course
Signalong is a system of signs based on British Sign Language for use
with children and adults with learning difficulties and difficulties acquiring
speech or language. Many of the signs used in Signalong are the same as
those used in Makaton. This course is taught by qualified Signalong
tutors. You will:

     Learn to use over 300 different signs;
     Learn how to use signs effectively and naturally with those you
      communicate with on a day to day basis;
     Learn principles of communication with the hands;
     Get a manual containing over 300 signs.

Suitable for: anyone who works with or cares for children or adults with
significant difficulties acquiring speech or language and who could benefit
from a key word signing approach. Low cost parent/carer places available
on this course.

Signalong phase 2
For people who have completed a Signalong foundation course and who
wish to increase their key word signing skills or to brush up on signing
which may have become a little rusty. We will also include ideas for using
and teaching signs in mainstream school classes.

Low cost parent/carer places available on this course.

Using P-levels with the Commtap website to set targets and
find suitable activities for children working below the level of
their peers
     Performance indicators for children working below the level of their
      peers in mainstream schools;
     Practical experience using the Commtap website to access a range of
      targets and activities for children working at a variety of different
      educational levels;
     Opportunities to think of targets and find activities for children you are
      currently working with;
     How to record a child's progress simply and provide useful concise
      reports;
     Plenty of time to ask questions and practice using a laptop – however
      anxious computers make you feel!

Suitable for: higher level teaching assistants/learning support assistants,
teachers in early years, primary or secondary schools.

Running social skills groups
     What social skills are and why they are so important;
     How to structure social skills groups;
     Practice a range of activities to support social skills;
     Hands on practice in planning targets and activities for social skills
      development for both younger and older primary school children;
     Plenty of time to ask questions and relate activities to children you
      know and work with currently.

primary and secondary schools.

Talking time
Supporting emergent language skills in play focused groups: a play based
approach for developing language in the early years, moving on to using
books and specially developed picture material (‘hexagons’) which are
provided with the course.

Suitable for: teaching assistants/learning support assistants, teachers in
early years and key stage 1.

Understanding and managing sensory difficulties in order to
build better communication skills
     Beginning to understand the range of sensory difficulties different
      children experience – for example those frequently occurring with
      autism;
     How to informally assess sensory difficulties;
     Activities to help manage sensory difficulties in a mainstream
      classroom;
     Plenty of time to ask questions and relate activities to children you
      know and work with currently.

Suitable for: teaching assistants/learning support assistants and teachers
in early years, primary and secondary schools.

Running groups to develop language skills
     How to plan and structure language groups;
     How to use the Commtap website to find suitable targets and activities
      for language development for children with different language skills;
     Hands on experience and practice of planning a language group with
      suitable targets and activities for children you know and work with;

Using music to develop early social and language skills
There is no need to play an instrument or read music to take this course –
but you must be enthusiastic and prepared to join in with activities!

     Become familiar with a range of simple songs with props for music
      groups;
     Understand how to adapt songs and activities in order to support early
      social skills and early language skills;
     Learn how to adjust the songs and activities to higher or lower levels
      as needed by the children in the group;
     Learn how to write short concise reports on music groups using either
      the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum or the P-scales;
     Get a list of songs with their matching activities and the materials
      needed to run effective and enjoyable music groups in your school.

Suitable for: higher level teaching and learning support assistants in early
years and primary schools.
