Atmospheric Science, University of Miami, Miami, Florida.

COURSE EXPERIENCE:
Geosciences: I have taught lower division courses including Oceanography, Physical Geology,
Conservation of Natural Resources, and Historical Geology. These courses serve both
majors and non-majors. The upper division courses for majors that I have taught are
Geophysics and Marine Geology. These courses have a strong emphasis on computer
applications. Geophysics emphasizes the use of geophysical data to understand global
geological features. I have coordinated a number of Seminars in Tectonics, Geochemistry,
and Geophysics where majors read and discuss professional papers. I have supervised the
Senior Capstone projects a number of different years.
Environmental Studies: I coordinated the course "Environmental Methods of
Investigation" designed together with colleagues from Biology, Chemistry,
Economics and Political Science for ten years. The course has a strong emphasis
on field and laboratory work, integration of disciplines, and group projects. I
coordinated the Senior Capstone seminar and supervised numerous internships.
                                       JILL M. WHITMAN

COURSE EXPERIENCE (cont.):
Integrated Studies: I taught Nature and Supernature, now called Authority and Discovery
(then INTG 111) with a colleague from History. This course explores and
integrates changes in political ideals, the arts, religious beliefs, and science during
the Renaissance, Reformation, Scientific Revolution, and Enlightenment. I taught
Energy, Resources, and Pollution (then INTG 241) with a colleague from
Economics. This course combines scientific, social scientific and ethical methods
to examine environmental issues. I taught INTC 240: Sustainability and
Community with Oney Crandall, from the Center for Public Service. This course
examines issues of sustainability from the personal, regional, national, and global
perspective, using natural and human systems as a theoretical framework.
Interim: Designed and taught the course "Geology of North America through the Eyes of
        John McPhee" (1990).
Short Courses and Field Trips: Geology of the Great Basin (1990, 1994); Elderhostel: Natural
History of Mt St Helens and Mt Rainier (1990); Geology of Mt St Helens (1990, 1991):
Elderhostel: Geologic History of the North Cascades (1992); Elderhostel: The Volcanic
Giants (1993); Elderhostel: Mt Rainier (1997).

CURRENT RESEARCH ACTIVITIES:
Environmental analysis of urban and developing watersheds, Clover Creek and Sequalitchew
Creek - examination of historical and present land use, human impact, trends in water
quality and stream conditions; with focus particularly on stakeholder involvement,
indicators to measure watershed health, and recommendations for future actions.
Teaching the Scientific Method: Learning by Doing - design of classroom and laboratory
exercises to develop skills in scientific literacy, with emphasis for non-science majors

PAST RESEARCH EXPERIENCE:
Mentoring - focus on women in science and mathematics, peer mentoring; extensive literature
review, invited presentation, facilitator for discussion campus group, steering committee
member SMART Program, peer academic mentoring on an athletic team.
Analysis of stable isotopes in foraminifera with mass spectrometer (VG Micromass 602C);
familiarity with planktonic and benthic foraminiferal assemblages, interpretation of
global and oceanic changes associated with the onset of northern hemisphere glaciation.
Processing and interpretation of single-channel seismic reflection data from the East Mariana
Basin, using digitized data and computer processing programs (SIOSEIS); correlation
with drilling results, interpretation of sedimentation history.
Sedimentologist on D/V Glomar Challenger, Deep Sea Drilling Project Leg 89, Yokohama-
Noumea, analysis of volcaniclastic sediments of the Mariana Basin and calcareous-rich
sediments of the Ontong Java Plateau, September-December 1992
Modeling of Pacific Ocean Basin plate configurations for the Cenozoic; use of computerized
plate rotation program (HYPERMAP); interpretation of magnetic anomaly patterns.
