                                 CALHOUN STREET STUDY CHARRETTE

The second Calhoun Street Study Charrette, which will focus on some of the finer details of
issues such as Urban Design, Streetscape and Circulation, will be held on Monday, July 14,
2008 from 4:00 pm until 7:00 pm at the Charleston Maritime Center, located at 10 Wharfside
Street on the Cooper River end of Calhoun Street. This is the second charrette which involves
stakeholders and interested citizens in the creation of a Master Plan for Calhoun Street. The
Charrette is being led by the City of Charleston’s Department of Planning, Preservation and
Economic Innovation and Chan Krieger Sieniewicz of Boston, Massachusetts. .

The Calhoun Street Study is being conducted to develop a Master Plan for the portion of
Calhoun Street extending from Marion Square to the Cooper River water front. At the first
Charrette, held on June 2, 2008, the Chan Krieger team presented the preliminary findings of
the consultants and the Charrette’s attendees had an opportunity to discuss the project and
offer suggestions to the team. During this next Charrette, the Chan Krieger team will help
guide a process which will focus on details of the land use of the area such as height and
mass of buildings, view corridors, open spaces, parking, pedestrian and vehicle circulation.
Charleston stakeholders, and the information gathered during the last Charrette. At the
upcoming Charrette, there will be an opportunity for attendees to work in small groups to
respond to the discussions and provide feedback.

The initial results from the participants (stakeholders, specific interest groups, residents and
interested citizens) of the first Charrette was the desire for a truly mixed-use waterfront
along with a higher-density East Bay corridor open to a range of uses. There was also interest
in increasing the walkability of the area which has its own charm and grace and could mean
an emphasis on the public realm and the greening of the Calhoun Street area.

The public is invited to participate and join the process for connecting and engaging this
       portion of Calhoun Street.
